May 2007, Mrs Jackie Corkum

I went Apr 27 to May4th 2007 with my two daughters, ages 14 and 12. We have never had so much fun in our lives. It was wonderful!
Our room was clean, the food and drink was plentiful. The Staff were excellent. As for being harassed by the people trying to sell you time share, just say no thanks. After that, they are just pleasant greeters.
I am 40 years old; I loved the party atmosphere... (which is why I chose FUN Royale...duh...).
I found the meat that was not in gravy tough, so I didn’t eat it. Always a lot other to chose from. But I would have never even tried the meat if it was not well cooked, because I would have been nervous in a foreign country eating anything but well done meat.
All I can say is, if you’re a stick in the mud...don’t go. My mother travelled with us as well. She is a definite 5 star only vacationer. Where will she go next year? Fun Royale!
Plane ride was uncomfortable, but with the price we paid...how can you complain?

Apr 2007, Mrs C Dempsey

A holiday from hell.
We were looking forward to a rest and booked this hotel. When we arrived we were told by the rep that the hotel was overbooked and we would have to stay elsewhere until there were rooms available.
We lived out of a suitcase for three days in a hotel with very poor facilities until we were given a room at the Fun Royale.
It has a 24hr bar which wasn't mentioned in the brochure. The drunks that hadn't tried to kick open their room doors after shouting and swearing at 4.00am in the morning, were shouting and swearing round the bar (which was next to the restaurant) while we had our breakfast.
They then went for a lie down before another session starting in the afternoon and lasting till breakfast time.
We were given a green wrist band, this meant we were first timers and as a result we were harassed every day when going to breakfast by people wanting us to buy into the vacation club. (If you did you got a pink band).
The hotel was overrun with stray cats and the noise from them and the peacocks that also reside there was terrible.
We managed to book into the Italian a la carte restaurant after standing in a queue from 6.45am. The food we were served was cold, the waiter was very pleased I had told him this and came back with another one which was a little warmer.
The beach was filthy, covered with rubbish, bottles, shoes, paper, a fridge etc. and was never cleaned up.
I would not recommend this hotel and we will not be going back again.

Mar 2007, cerilouise

Spent Christmas and new year at the fun tropicale royale wish we had stayed at home. The cleanliness and hygiene here is none existent. Bedding was not changed for twelve days and was only changed when everybody was covered from head to toe with flea bites.
Even when medical support was needed they ripped you off costing of injections and tablets where £160 be aware they keep you in the room until you pay up. The food well what can we say tepid waiting for bugs to thrive. Any one wanting a holiday from hell this is the perfect place to be.
I felt so sorry for the people booking in as we where leaving knowing that they would be the same as us by the end of a fortnight. The rep I felt sorry for with over 50 people complaining at the same time was harrowing stefan and lisa deserved better. The only good thing on the site was the entertainment staff well done too you all spaghetti we will miss you.

Mar 2007, Mr J Phillips

The Hotel is very noisy at night, we had two weeks of noise from 1am to 4.30am most nights.
Lots of 18 to 30 year olds partying all night, if you are of this age group you will enjoy it, lots of people called the security each night but they make a lot of noise also.
The cleaning staff come around about 7am and the noise they make also wake you up. There are no security locks on the doors so they open the door to see if you have gone to breakfast. One morning the cleaner came into the room and into the bathroom where I was starkers, said sorry and left.
There are lots of small insects in the room. I also killed a few cockroaches. I would only give the hotel 2stars.
We tried complaining to the Guest Services but was waste of time and space, the First Choice Rep gave us the direct dial telephone no. for security and to call them if it happened again.
Every time you go to the restaurant there are sales staff waiting to sell you some kind of holiday programme.
The food in the restaurant was a good choice but the meat was usually tough, restaurant staff were good but the bar staff, when busy did not listen to what you wanted or very polite.
We were always short of towels in the bathroom and only once had the full amount and they were always in very poor condition. If I had them at home I would throw them out.
The shows in the evenings past away a couple of hours and was not too bad.
I would not go to this Hotel again but I would pay a bit more and go to one that was on the beach, after I had read more of these reviews.

My partner and I stayed in Fun Royale...
2 / 10
Jan 2007, fvwarner

My partner and I stayed in Fun Royale & Fun Tropicale Beach Resort for 3 weeks in July 2006.
I would give the holiday 2/10 our main issues with the hotel were that the rooms were dated, i.e. wall paper pealing, cracks in the ceiling and tiles.
In the bathroom there were little bugs everywhere, the lighting in the bedroom was so poor that you couldn’t tell if they were there or not.
The pool attendants stare at you while your sun bathing which is enormously uncomfortable. I was under the impression that the beach was going to be white sand and clear sea. The sand is yellow and there are "sand fleas" everywhere meaning you come home with little bites (not that itchy but uncomfortable.
You can’t swim in the sea because there is dead coral everywhere, which is very sharp and if you scrape against it you can get cut very easily.
If you like chips and pizza your fine for food but if you’re after something a bit different you will be disappointed. All the meat is over cooked beyond belief.
The Alcohol is terrible and after drinking two vodka and cokes I was sick, the vodka is yellow and the beer is flat. I had a bad stomach for the majority of the holiday and for about a week when I was back at home. Take some tablets with you! They cost a fortune in the local shops.
At the shopping centre a guy in a security uniform called us over, thinking there was a problem we went over, aggressively he asked us for money.
Also when you use the reception phone, time the phone calls yourself because the guy at reception used to charge a lot extra than the time we had actually used. When we complained to him that he had charged extra he got very aggressive and when the hotel manager came he still refused to apologise.
After complaining to our rep (who was very very helpful and apologetic we moved to the Hacienda Resort which saved our holiday) don’t go to "Fun" Royal or Tropical!

Very very humid at this time of year...

Aug 2006, Miss J E J Maxwell

Very very humid at this time of year and the weather is changeable, therefore it would be advisable to prepare for this before going.
The hotel itself was amazing the pools and activities where really good and well organised. The best thing was the evening entertainment that really surprised me, especially the Michael Jackson evening.
The buffet was the best all inclusive I have ever seen, the choice and presentation where untouchable. The free bars are dotted around the resort and even down on the beach.
The rooms are big and clean, they may be a little run down however they are more than adequate. The sports equipment is down on the beach and you will have to ask for it. Generally there is only one thing (2 snorkels and flippers) however we didn’t realised and hogged the flippers for a whole day!
The staff are great and if you can get up really early you will have a great meal in either of the two served restaurants, the Brazilian was my favourite.
The only draw back was the humidity which did tire me out and the price of things like souvenirs was really high. The compound you are in has an amazing golf course and restaurants, so go for a walk around it is beautiful.

We were anticipating a luxurious week...
3 / 10
Jul 2006, Miss H Buckingham

We were anticipating a luxurious week all inclusive in a 4* hotel at this Caribbean resort but were very disappointed. The hotel accommodation was very poor. The rooms and bathrooms were dated and dirty and the communal areas dark and dirty.
The restaurant was a complete disappointment - you could only eat at certain times of each day (the previous all inclusive we had stayed at you could eat whatever you wanted at any time of the day or night) and all the food was buffet style and usually covered in flies. The food was uninteresting, bland and very repetitive throughout the week. My brother in law caught an ear infection from the pool - a sure sign that it was not cleaned regularly. The entertainment was shockingly bad, an amateur show put on by staff every night.
The water sports that were included in our package were also a complete disappointment as there were 6 of us holidaying together and only one sailboat could be used at a time, the kayaks barely worked and the lifejackets they insisted you wear were dirty and smelly. Based on our experience I would never recommend this area of the Dominican Republic and certainly not our hotel complex. Personally I will never return to the country again.

We are frequent travelers to this...

May 2006, Miss M Guevremont

We are frequent travelers to this resort. We really enjoy ourselves every time we go. This time around I traveled alone with the children in which I thought would be a little more difficult. The staff was so pleasant with us and the children have so much to do, thanks to the animation team and also many tourists that we have met.
This resort in my point of view is perfect for anyone of any age. Service is excellent, if there is a problem the staff is always ready to help in any way. Always with a smile!
They have a beautiful beach club in which lunch is served daily until 3p.m. The entertainment in the evening is something very amazing. They have a great team of dancers.
This resort is all about meeting new people and enjoying yourself, no need to worry. The food is excellent, there is so much variety. Even during the night if you are hungry they have hamburgers, hotdogs, salad and cheese and much more.
A holiday is what you make it to be, and with this resort they make it that much better! I strongly would recommend this resort to anyone. Have a great Holiday!
Manon.

Apr 2006, Miss E Hole

Despite the weather being generally rubbish for the 2 weeks of our holiday we really enjoyed it! The hotel is not luxury but the food is nice & there is 24 hour bar which is handy, and we found all the staff to be really, really friendly. We went to the Brazilian restaurant once which is great if you like meat! We went to the Italian once as well which was really, really nice food of a very high standard although you had to be up very early to get a booking there.
The buffet was always really nice and there always seems to be some meal going on at any part of the day. The hotel have a theme for most nights such as European or Mexican and some of the food follows the theme although there are many staples. The chef seemed to work all night and you could get burgers and hot dogs all through the night.
The hotel provided juice and branded soft drinks such as coca-cola. The beer & wine were nice enough. Most cocktails were rum based and perfectly drinkable. The bar staff would try and make you drinks not on the cocktail list if you requested them.
We stayed in the Fun Tropical part of the hotel which is the cheaper end but we found the room really nice and far larger than we had been expecting. We had a safe in our room although we did pay for the key but I can't remember how much. There was a hairdryer in the room & my own from the UK didn't work as the voltage is low. We had a TV with lots of channels, BBC world and a few US channels were English Language and the hotel will hire you DVDs.
The hotel does provide entertainment, shows, bingo, disco etc which were all fun. There is an outside stage but if it rains the shows continued using the disco building.
We went in January and the British there were families comprising of about 50% of the hotel and the rest of the residence were Canadians mostly without children. The hotel had a really nice atmosphere & there were no drunken idiots even at 3 am!
There were lots of stray cats around the resort but they were really friendly. There were also peacocks.
Probably my only complaint would be there are lots of people trying to sell you time-shares and they are pushy. They must know when you get there though as we were not approached once in our second week.
We really enjoyed our stay here & would recommend it.

The good, the bad & the ugly!!!
The good.
Weather was awesome, entertainment brilliant, stuff going on all day & the evening entertainment was fab :). The food was fantastic, we never made it into the Italian or Brazilian restaurants, and the buffet was superb. The entertainers are super friendly, we had a great laugh with them all. not that our 6 year old daughter went to the kids club, I heard nothing but excellent reports from the other parents staying there, we just couldn't get our daughter out of the pool :) . The flight with first choice was excellent too, very comfy and loads of leg room, in-flight entertainment was good as well.
We did 3 excisions, Paradise Island, outback safari & ocean world. they were all excellent & well worth the money, if you do the outback safari, make sure you book it with the outback safari company as there are a few offering this type of trip but the outback safari company do a lot for the local community, also take as many pens, pencils, schooly text books, as you can because you get to visit a local school which desperately needs equipment. Swimming with the dolphins at ocean world is a must, well worth the money in view. Paradise Island is a great day out, apparently they filmed a bounty advert there once, its gorgeous, crystal clear waters & a coral reef to go snorkeling round.
The bad.
Nothing was really that bad, the local beach is not as nice as you’d like it to be, the sand is more brown the golden. Also bear in mind that this is the Atlantic side of the island so the water on this particular beach isn't particularly clear, that’s not to say the others aren't, we visited some fantastic beaches on the north side.
The general maintenance is a little poor but not serious, I would advise taking a pair of neoprene water shoes because the pool bottom is very course & you'll cut your toes, trust me!! The air-con worked but was a bit noisy & getting the hot water to regulate was a nightmare. Take plenty of shampoo, conditioner & factor 25+ cream, if you run out its well expensive. Keep a close eye on your pool towels, they disappear & they'll try to charge you $20 per lost towel.
The ugly.
For me, the only thing that let this place down was the fact that they serve alcohol in the pool bar which is right next to where the kids play in the pool. By lunch time there was always drunken idiots smoking their big cigars in the pool, jumping about, standing on the bar, generally making a nuisance of themselves.
This is a great family resort, unfortunately it also gets advertised as having a 24hr bar which attracts a lot of 18-30 type groups which doesn't mix to well if you have family's with kids. We we're unfortunate to have an arguing Canadian couple in the room next door to us, they didn't stop shouting & swearing at each other, I asked them nicely to stop as I didn't want my daughter hearing them but they continued. I complained each time they did it to guest services manager, after 4 days they got kicked out the hotel.
Having said all that, Feb/March is a great time to go, I’d definitely go back again, it was the best holiday ever.

Feb 2006, Mr J Maini

Don't stay at the Fun Tropical, it is really run-down and in need of serious upgrading. After being moved rooms twice within the first three days of our holiday we demanded to be upgraded to the Royale Tropical-Much better and can only recommend staying at this hotel if here.
Staff were friendly and the resort itself was very nice.
Don't forget about the beech bar, its a short walk away and the grill offers good food.
