North Conway Grand Hotel Reviews
" We stayed at the North Conway Grand... "

We stayed at the North Conway Grand for seven nights after Xmas, and had upgraded to the Jacuzzi room on the 4th floor.
We had a nice large room, huge jacuzzi bath; room was pleasant enough though not luxurious.
Food at the hotel was ok we had a meal twice in the evening and it was fairly mediocre, although the service was excellent. Breakfast at the hotel was buffet style with plenty of choice and was good.
There are plenty of other nice restaurants in the town and offer better value; we eat at two very good steakhouses (Decades and Merlinos) and an Indian restaurant which were excellent. Lots of choice in town and good little cafe's as well for breakfast.
Positives about the hotel it’s well positioned, clean and comfortable, and ideal if you have children as they have full run of the hotel.
We were a couple travelling without children, so if you’re looking for a romantic break it’s not ideal or quiet.
Negatives are the bar closes early and no room service.

We are a family of 4, children aged 9 & 8. Never been to USA before, Mum & Kids never skied before.
Last minute decision to do some late season skiing over Easter (2nd to 11th April 07).
Originally planned to do Italy but 3* hotel in Italy cost more than 4* hotel in USA!
No brainer. Booked Virgin Holiday but through Holiday Hypermarket. Mistake. Identical holiday booked on-line through Virgin site would have saved £300+.
And more importantly for a ski holiday as it was late season, 3 of the closest ski areas to our hotel were all due to close the weekend before we arrived.
HH failed to tell us this, we only found out when looking at the Virgin website.
Virgin flights to Boston excellent, will definitely use again.
Car hire is part of the Virgin package, and Hypermarket chap in UK said USA car hire companies ALWAYS upgrade for next to nothing... sometimes nothing... so book cheapest car in package. Did so.
Sure enough, at Dollar rent-a-Car was offered upgrade to SUV vehicle. How much? $400+ for 10 days. Hardly next to nothing?
Good choice of car for mountains though, glad we paid the extra, couldn't help feeling a little conned though?
Arrived at North Conway Grand Hotel in heavy rain late at night.
Hotel at back of Retail Outlet complex so not easily visible from the main drag despite its size, especially in darkness and heavy rain. Contrived to miss the entrance twice.
Very poor signage.
Check in was efficient but not overfriendly, though it was late I suppose.
Room was large enough, 2 double beds, smallish bathroom, TV, Fridge, Safe, old fashioned warm-air heater, coffee maker. Adequate, but not spectacular. I would quibble whether the room ranked as a 4*. Hotel as a whole though, worthy of a 4* ranking.
Breakfast was superb; waitress service in the mornings was superb. Lobby was impressive, bar area impressive, functional but not de-luxe Gym area, decent games room for the kids, indoor heated pool with Jacuzzi and an OUTDOOR heated pool with Jacuzzi, fully functional even at -8c when we were there. Kids loved it.
Biggest quibble of the stay? The restaurant in the evening.
The Manager doubled as a waiter, and he had an uncanny knack of making you feel you were inconveniencing him by being there. He was polite enough, this is the USA (!), but he would hurry your order, or hover over you tapping his pen on his pad whilst you made up your mind. Not a good atmosphere. And if you question anything on the bill, as we had to, he clearly graduated from the Basil Fawlty school of Excellence.
We gave the restaurant 3 of our 10 nights, and it didn't improve.
Don't let it put you off though, there are plenty of places to eat in North Conway itself, and aside from the Restaurant of an evening, the hotel is fine. Suggest a lick of paint needed in the rooms though, just to freshen the tired looking decor a bit.
As for the general area?
New Hampshire and the White Mountain Area in particular is beautiful in the snow.
We were lucky and had a fresh dump of 15" the day after we arrived and it transformed the place.
Even though the closest ski areas were closed, there were still 5 other areas open within an hour’s drive. We tried 4 of them and conditions were excellent, but you need a car, none were closer than 35 minutes away.
Recommend Wildcat, snow was really good there. Bretton Woods ... the learning slope has a quad chairlift and it's free! Good place to get your ski legs if you're an absolute beginner, and you haven't wasted money on ski passes that you aren't competent enough to use yet.
Loon Mountain is very expensive but worth a look.
My favourite place was Sunday River, good snow, bigger area so lot's of runs and a more modern feel to the whole resort.... but it's a good hour's drive each way.
Be warned. New Hampshire is good for novice skiers, but experienced skiers will get bored quickly. The ski areas are very small in comparison to the big Alpine resorts and you will have skied every run after just 1 day.
As long as you have a car, you can visit a different area every day ... there are plenty of them, but it will mean clocking up a lot of miles.
Oh ... and après-ski doesn't exist.
For non-skiers (why would anyone not want to ski?) the factory outlets are right on the doorstep of the North Conway Grand, and there were certainly bargains to be had. You definitely don't need a car.... the shops are literally yards away!
Did we enjoy the whole experience? Yep. Would we recommend it? Yep.
Would we do it again? Not sure. Would never say never, but the ski areas are just not big enough for a half-decent skier.
Loved USA though, and we thought Virgin were good too.
The resort rep was extremely helpful, though she did say she wouldn't be returning to New Hampshire again next season, she warned that in the deep mid-winter, December/January time, the temperatures dropped to such low levels she didn't want to venture outside ... so she wasn't doing that again for another year!

" We stayed at the north Conway grand... "

We stayed at the north Conway grand from Boxing Day until just after New Year we are a family of 2 adults and 2 children aged 8 and 10. The hotel is a lovely grand hotel when you drive up to it. The bar and restaurant are all trimmed up and a huge open fire blazes away.
We were very impressed with the communal areas. Unfortunately when we saw our room it was not to the same standard. Although it was a good size with all the facilities you would need it was very tired and in need of decorating. The room was quite expensive so we were disappointed with that. The kids club was poor they never seemed to have enough staff and parents needed to stay with the kids! Having said that my kids don't do the kids club so it didn't affect us.
Food was very good both at breakfast and in the restaurant. However the best meal we had was a bar snack in the bar sat by the giant TV and open fire. It was inexpensive and very good!
The hotel pool was very pleasant and the location of the hotel which opened right onto the shopping mall was brilliant.
We had never skied before and had not intended to ski, but we went to a small resort called king pine and decided to have a go, needless to say we loved it. The kids in particular can't wait to return this year. King pine is a small family ski resort aimed at families with younger kids who are beginners.
Having said that north Conway is a lovely place for a wintry holiday without the need to ski. There is lots to see and do and the hotel is in a perfect location.
