" Absolutely Great "

Lovely friendly place. Faces sea directly but rocky there. Nearest sand 500m down beach to left, sam for tavernas. Possible to stay without a rental car though I recommend one. Highlight is that bar is well priced and they keep the glasses in the ice cream freezer. Downside for me at least was that self catering does not mean a grill and an oven in this case. A fridge and two hobs is your lot. Bear in mind if on a budget. May be tough to not eat out.
Here... I did you a detailed google map also with plenty on it: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=uk&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115115205793395724033.000472b0651e4bd00d88a&t=h&ll=35.334077,25.275078&spn=0.006109,0.01089&z=17

Advice: Quiet but close enough to sand and food to not need a car. Self Catering facilities below par.

Activities: www.zorbas.nl inland up nearest road, cross rope bridge, BBQ Saturdays recommended!

" We're going back next year!!!! "

We stayed here with our 2 children for 1 week in the middle of Augsust.
The staff our wonderful and remembered our names from day one. Rania,Shirley and George are especially wonderful.
Our room was great (502) we could hear the sea at night with the doors open The hotel is directly under the flight path but to be honest the planes were never a problem for us but with the doors shut then you didn't hear them anyway. The room was big with 2 seperate bedrooms the one the kids had also had the kitchen/diner in it but both had patio doors onto the balcony. And on top of the towels we also had free dressing gowns nice touch i thought.
The aircon was an extra €8 a night which wasn't bad and €20 for the safe but to be honest we never bothered with the safe as the place was so secure.
The pool and poolside bar was just right lively at times but the music was never intrusive and there were plenty of sunbeds. The taverna was really good value for money approx €8 a meal and was of the highest quality. Please DO NOT miss the Greek night a buffet to die for and entertainment fantastic. Dancing on tables and their version of the hokey cokey was great the staff work so hard to make it the perfect night out.....and I would like to say thank you once again just in case they read this.
The whole complex was kept immaculately clean from Yanis cleaning the pool everyday to the ladies who hosed down the poolside early in the morning.
The resort is small but there are a number of tavernas just down the road which are good value for money. Gouves is a taxi ride away (€10) and is a bit livelier but still not overly comercialised. We recommend the little train which stops right outsde the hotel and takes you into Gouves and Kokhini Hani cost €8 per adult €4 per child do it early on as it will help you get your bearings.
Kimberley the First Choice rep was a sweetie she came every day except for one and was their to help one thing we would say though is DON'T book trips through First Choice. We went to Heraklion and Knossos on local transport Bus at top of road (15 mins walk) then from bus station a No.2 to Knossos the whole trip cost us as a family of 4 €39 with First Choice the cosr was €39 per adult and €27 per child big saving if you are prepared to go local but it is also good fun too the local buses are all airconditioned so its not exactly slumming it. The other trip we went on was to Spinalonga Island on a boat and also a beach BBQ and some time in Agios Nikolaeus we booked it at a small travel agents in Kokhini Hani just opposite a supermarket (not the Spar) it cost is €72 then an extra €20 for the BBQ and boat .If you get Sergio the travel guide then you are in for a real treat he is a scream. Booking throgh First Choce was €180 nearly double!! There are also some travel places in Gouves but never used them so could not say if they were as cheap. Heraklion airport was the best greek airport we have been too spacious and very efficient compared to Corfu last year.
We could not fault Golden Bay at all if you like quiet with the kids then come hear if you want late nights and KFC then go to Malia or Hersonnissos. Would recommend this place for young couples who are not wanting to party all night and older couples without kids as although we went with kids as did others it was never noisey in fact for a really relaxing holiday in the perfect location within easy reach of lots of places plus a 20 minute airport transfer so just book it!!

Advice: Very quiet village with a few bars and tavenas lovely friendly people

Activities: Appartment restaurant excellent.Knossos use local transport!!

" Holiday 2009 - Golden Bay - Gournes - Crete "

My husband and I stayed at the Golden Bay Apartments, Gournes, Crete for one week from 12th July 2009.

The coach journey from the airport only took about 20 minutes which was lovely and ensured we could get straight on with the holiday virtually. How those coach drivers manage on the tiny roads!
First impressions as we drew next to the apartments were “Wow!” The sea was just across the road from the apartments and although you weren’t able to swim from there as it was very rocky, just being able to hear and see the waves from your Apartment was lovely.

The front of the Apartments was immaculate – and the reception area, very impressive I’ve got to say ! Lovely and spacious and once again, spotlessly clean!
Staff: We were made really welcome by all the staff at Golden Bay, who were always around to make sure everyone was happy. They went out of their way to greet people and made everyone feel relaxed and at home.

Our room was lovely .. (305). We had a separate bedroom, living room with dining table and chairs plus two sofas that could become single beds. Lovely clean bathroom with a shower screen !! A nice touch too, were towelling dressing gowns for our use .. which, aswell as all towelling and linen, was changed once during our week long stay.

We had two lovely balconies, overlooking the pool area and our own personal orchestra of cicadas in the two trees just by our balcony. Was lovely to be serenaded whilst sipping our Ouzo.

Basic kitchen utensils and crockery are provided .. plus a toaster, fridge and 2 ring cooker. TV in the room and air con if needed (8 euros per night)

We used the internet facilities whilst we were there – 3 computers so there is always one free. There was a pool table and an area to swop books and where people left their left over toiletries.

Happy Hour between 6 – 9 was always bustly. With people meeting up there for a sundowner before going on to one of the tavernas, or indeed, staying at the apartments and eating in their tarverna which overlooks the sea. (There’s a lovely play area for the young ones just next to this, so they can play whilst you finish eating or drinking – within vision) You get a coupon when you arrive at Golden Bay saying “Free jug of wine” with your meal at the taverna .. so its worth going !
The pool area was always kept clean and tidy and everyone settled into their holiday really quickly and we were all on nodding terms, if not becoming friends! (My OH was ill one night and couldn’t get out so I went for a cocktail and was chatting to two lovely ladies who invited me to join them for a meal .. that’s how nice and friendly people were)

For those unlucky enough to have night flights on the way home, there is a lovely shower room and towels are provided which is a fantastic tough I think, as there’s nothing worse than having to pack wet towels in your luggage.

All in all .. a great base to stay. I would suggest hiring a car though, as Gournes isn’t the most perfect of resorts and quite honestly, if I’d only stayed in this “resort”, I would have been put off going to Crete again.

" If you like a quiet resort with a safe child friendly atmosphere, then this is the place for you "

I got back from Crete two days ago, after spending a relaxed week at the Golden Bay appartments in Gournes. There have been some mixed reviews about this place, but I am here to put the record straight with an objective opinion.
Accommodation:-
Myself, my wife and two children, 8 and 1 stayed in one of the ground floor appartments.
There are some steps and very few ramps, so if you are in a wheelchair or have a pram as we did, it can be a bit of a minor inconvenience, but not too much trouble. The rooms are spacious and clean although if you want air conditioning ( and if you have small children, I strongly recommend you get it) it is 8 euros per night (2009 price). I was a little bit disappointed that the aircon was not included in the price as it has been everywhere else that I have stayed, but it did not distract from the overall stay too much.
Staff:-
The staff are all very friendly and extremely helpful. Ranya is the manageress, and is a lovely lady who is very helpful, as are all of her staff. At night you can have a good banter with the bar staff and if you are lucky, "George" behind the bar will show you his magic tricks, which impressed the hell out of my 8 year old and myself. The cleaners are discreet and will just get on with the job of cleaning your room without fuss, and will always ask before entering, if you are in your room at the time.
Facilities:-
There is a very nice (medium sized) swiming pool with a small side pool for the younger children and enough sun loungers for everyone.
The bar is situated right beside the pool and has ample cover to shade you from the mid-day sun, which can get very hot (40 celcius in July/August)
There is a pool table for the children (2euro) and an internet room with Wi-Fi for anyone sad enough to want to use it while on holiday.
The onsite restaurant is very nice, with lovely views of the sea and sunset in the evening, and I recommend the Kleftico (Lamb based) Greek dish that is extremely nice for all you meat lovers. The restaurant also overlooks a childrens play area that sports little climbing frames, swings, slides, child sized play houses and see saws, so you can let the kids play and keep an eye on them while waiting for your meal.
Attractions and eating out :-
The onsite restaurant is great and if you want to go fully inclusive, I can recommend the food, which is all very nice, but if you want to go outside the complex, there are a handfull of local restaurants, stretching up the coast for about half a mile which are all pretty good, which have decking overlooking the sea.
The beaches are fairly clean and the sun loungers are about 6 euro's for the day with on hand waiting service for drinks and snacks.
There is a waterpark nearby which is a short bus journey away or just 20 minutes walk away is a great aquarium that is fairly cheap entry and great fun for the whole family. They even have a place where you can hold the starfish, crabs and sea cucumbers..
Shopping:-
If you are a shopoholic, then Golden Bay is not for you.
There are a couple of small shops dotted along the seafront just a couple of minutes walk from the complex. The shops have all the basics and a few souvenires, but if you want to do some serious shopping, you need to visit one of the main towns (Heraklion, or Hersonissos are only about 10 miles away)
Traveling and driving:-
We hired a car for a couple of days through the tour operator, but driving is a bit hair raising and I would not recommend it to anyone with a nervous disposition or anyone prone to road rage. The Cretians drive around with wanton abandon and will cut you up, overtake or pomp you at any turn. My advice would be, if you do drive, just chill out and let the nutters go by. I did this and stayed relatively calm. That said, I had a great couple of days exploring the island and would recommend traveling to the south, where much of the area is untouched by tourism.
Other bits:-
On arrival I noticed a slight smell of rotting seaweed, but this only seems to happen when the wind is blowing off the sea and you soon become immune to it anyway.
Walking around is difficult with small children because of the heat. If you go anywhere on foot, slap on the factor 30 and keep your head covered.
Value for money:-
The holiday itself was great value because we booked less than two weeks from our departure date. The extra's for things like Air Conditioning are a bit much and if you are British, the pound to Euro is not too good at the moment, so an evening meal out for 4 (2 adults, 2 children) will be in the region of about 30 quid. A beer costs about £2.50 to £3 depending upon where you go.
Car hire is expensive and a moderate hatchback will cost you upwards of 130 quid for 2 days.
Overall opinion:-
If you are single and looking for nightlife, this is NOT the resort for you
If you have a family or are just looking for peace and quiet, then this is an IDEAL destination.

Advice: You must visit the Aquarium near by, it is good value for money and good fun

Activities: I can't remember the names, but the restaurants are all pretty good near by

" lovely relaxing holiday "

We enjoyed a really lovely 2 week break at Golden Bay. I agree with the other comments that it is situated in a quiet spot between two resorts, so if this is not what you want don’t go! The apartments are clean and spacious and the staff are really lovely and helpful – they really make an effort to do everything to make your holiday enjoyable. Greek night at Golden Bay was great and I thought the Greek food served at the taverna was really nice. We also used the large Spar supermarket in Gournes for water and other food shopping, but be warned, you will need a taxi back!
We spent a lot of time around the pool which the kids loved and also went into Heraklion for a couple of days out. You can catch the bus from Gournes it’s about a 20 min ride away. We did try to go to Knossos – got there, saw the massive crowds of tourist groups and thought NO WAY so abandoned that one! It was unbelievable, even the buses were uncomfortably packed. Other guests told us they were herded around inside the site while on a 1st choice trip so maybe that is one to avoid in peak season.
We did go on the 1st choice trip to Spinalonga which was fantastic if you like a bit of culture. The guide Constantine was amazing and spoke really knowledgably about history. We also went independently to the Water-City water park which was fab (the taxi was around 13e) do get there early though as by 2pm the Malia ‘brits abroad’ crew arrive and the atmosphere is not so family friendly. Crete aquarium is a short walk away if you want an afternoon out of the sun.
The beaches around Gournes are small and sadly do suffer from rubbish being washed up, but we did have fun swimming in the sea and snorkelling. Beware it is HOT you will need to make sure you are protected in the sun.
I’d consider going back to Golden Bay as we had a really relaxing break and I’d definitely want to return to Crete as I love Greece…

" Outstanding!!! "

A very warm welcoming, friendly hotel. All the staff make an effort to get to know you personally, namely Shirley, Rania, Yanni and George and nothing is too much trouble. The hotel itself is immaculatly clean with generous rooms, fabulous views and is central with easy access to nearby villages. I found this holiday very relaxing and thoroughly enjoyed sampling traditional greek cooking. If you are looking for a peaceful relaxing holiday then you wwon't go wrong. Children are very much welcomed and they also enjoyed the facilities on offer. A wonderful hotel with a unique friendly personal service, I was really sad to leave.

" Our Pleasant Stay! "

The apartments are very desirably situated, near many bays, rocks and some sandy beaches. The accommodation and facilities are very adequate, having benefits of swimming pool, pool bar, and restaurant. The hospitality of the staff and representatives were comforting. During our stay of a week, we found many things to do each day and never got bored. Some days, we decided to relax and do nothing more than to stay by the beach. We highly recommend seeing the Palace of Knossos, the Crete Aquarium, and any Exhibitions locally. I think if we were to visit again we would like to visit Dia Island. If you do decide to go to Crete, I highly recommend buying bottled natural table water. Temperature each day during our stay was around 35 degree Celsius.

Advice: Very untouched place with many attractions.

Activities: Taverna, at Golden Bay, as-well as local restaurants between Gournes and Gouves.

" Absolutely Fantastic "

We stayed here the 1st week of September and loved every minute of it.
The flight out from Birmingham was interesting as we flew out late at night and had a groups of lads intent on getting smashed on the plane which led to some rowdy behaviour - its the first time I've been on a flight where the captain comes over the speakers and threatens to touch down in Italy to get them removed from the plane - I felt the stewarddess could of helped this by not giving them as much alcohol as they did - but finally we touched down.
The advantage of staying here is that it takes the coach about 15 mins to get here so your soon in your room - it also means our last picked up so you don't have to sit too long on the coach.
The rooms are basic but they have everything you need and are clean - you don't stay in there for any great length of time.
This is a lovely 'family run' hotel - yes its not family run but that is how it feels. Everyone is very friendly and there is a fantastic atmosphere.
The food was spot on and as being all inclusive we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner in the complex. The greek night is well worth the money and a fantastic time was had by all including the greek dancing and traditional plate smashing.
The bloke behind the bar on an evening was very entertaining and happily gave free shots away to get the mood flowing.
We did the trip to the leper colony which was okay - I enjoyed the swimming in the sea and the lunch more than the colony which was rather boring personally.
We also went to the water park which was okay but a bit repetitive once you've been on them all a couple of times. Appratently the other park is better but First Choice do not do tours there. Becareful though as you are given wrist bands when you go in and everything you buy is added onto these and then you pay for it at the end. Extremely dangerous if you have children who are off on their own - there was a few parents nearly having an heart-attack at the end when given the bill.
Where the hotel is located there is not a great deal around it. There are a couple of beaches to the left and right when you come out that are pleasant and the sea is nice. Turning left out of the complex there are a few taverna's - we were told the first one you meet is good quality but we never left the complex for food so can't back this up. Further down is a couple of small supermarkets selling the extra bits that you need.
Turning right and heading along the coastal road takes you to the sealife place.
We also went to the market in Agios Nikolaos but we did this trip ourselves. If you walk out of the complex and up to the top where the main road is you can get a bus there - it cost us about 8 euros for 2 adults and 2 children and takes about 40 minutes.
Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful picturesque town on the sea, the market however was nothing special and quite small in comparison with other markets we have been to when away. The main things on sale were clothes. When we got to the end we were left with the feeling of 'is that it?'
All in all this is the first time we have been to crete and on this 1st impression we will be returning and back to this complex again!!!

" This was the first holiday for myself... "

This was the first holiday for myself and new partner so we wanted some where nice and quiet. The golden bay was perfect. Lovley staff who were more than happy to help and a wonderful bar tender at night who made the party for us in this small relaxed resort.
Perfectly situated on the sea edge and a short walk to the beach with brethtaking vievs to the island across the bay.
The apartmens were a little basic but very claen and tidy, the food was very good wherever we ate.
A trip to one of the water parks is so much fun, but keep your arms in on the slides as they can be rough in places!
Best i think to hire a car and take your self to any place you may want to see as i felt more than a little ripped off by the cost of the package trips from First Choice.
If you have chance drive to a small island called Kolokitha, you go over a small bridge at Elonda and drive up the mountain, park at the top and walk down the other side to find a very romantic little beach well worth the trip.
After this holiday and the welcome we got from the locals as well as the staff at the apartment i would return to Crete we had such a wonderful time .

" A wonderful holiday!
If your... "

A wonderful holiday!
If your looking for lots of nightlife this is not the place to go, however, for a weeks relaxation in the sun it was perfect!
The staff were exceptional, within the first few hours of our stay it was first name terms and they really couldn't do enough to help! It was the same for the locals, at no point did we encounter anything but a complete welcoming and helpful attitude (a far cry from some grumpy locals on previous holidays)!
A little short of spends we planned to eat breakfast and lunch in the apartment and dine out in the evening but the food was so reasonably priced we only actually managed to prepare one breakfast of our own! We tried out a few Tavernas in the village but by the end of our stay only ate at the Taverna on the complex, the food was good and very reasonably priced (about 60 euros for all four of us to eat and drink plenty)! That did include a few free drinks thrown in!
I would suggest jumping on the little train on your first day, it was a really good way to get an idea of the surroundings and your actual location (slightly closer to shops etc than we first realised).
We visited the local aquarium, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. It was a short walk and worth the air conditioning as well as the wide variety of sea life!
We used the first choice excursion to visit the aqua park which in hindsight did seem pretty expensive. It was a fun day, but cost us nearly 100 euros to go and then we somehow spent another 60 euros whilst there, on a small lunch and a few snacks - would recommend a packed lunch for that one!
Our first visit to the beech was a 5 min walk to the left when you left the complex, it was a Sunday and very busy! A beautiful sandy beech, where you could hire sun beds and parasols, with a waiter service for drinks, however, after our little tour on the train we realised that if you walked right out of the complex and followed the road around there was a more secluded beech, which we preferred....even without the sunbeds!
Greek night in the complex was fantastic, even got my 13 yr old up and dancing!!! For 2 adults and 2 children it cost 86 euros for a fantastc buffet, unlimited wine and soft drinks and Greek dancing - very interactive, on tables and with the good old plate smashing, lots of fun!
All in all, a fantastic holiday - enjoyed by all (and that's not easy with a 13 yr old and 10 yr old in tow)!

Apartments basic but very clean. Fair walk to a beautiful beach but worth the walk! Apartments by pool bar are noisy but we were moved when we asked, Aranya at the apartments was really friendly and helpful. Not enough sun loungers by the pool. Be aware of additional charge for AC of 10 Euros per day. This is not mentioned in the First Choice brochure so is not the hotel's fault.
All in all we had a great time but it may be a bit quiet for young couples or families with small children.

" Apart from the very frequent sound of... "

Apart from the very frequent sound of airplanes going overhead to Heraklion airport just 10 or so kilometres west, Gournes is a very quiet resort. The town itself was unexplored by us and I don't feel that we missed out there, but we didn't take the 40 minute walk to Gouves which did look much more lively and good for shops and beach. (We saw this from the road train - much more fun!) The sea front has a small number of restaurants or Tavernas. Ambrosia proved to be a winner for all. There isn't a beach directly outside the hotel (as it looks to have in the brochure) but a short walk of 5 mins will get you to beds and parasols for 5 Euros.

The Golden Bay Appartments are very clean and well run, with a small number of staff who do brilliantly. There are a couple of supermarkets within easy walking distance, although the choice is very basic. The self catering facilities are very limited with a toaster, a kettle, a fridge and a two ring electric cooker. The pool is a little small if there are many people staying and grabbing a poolside bed is difficult if you're not up by 8am. On Thursdays they host a Greek night. This involves plenty of traditional Greek buffet food and wine, musicians and dancers and plenty of audience participation all for 25 or 18 Euros. Some families commented that their teenagers were bored and it has to be said that young people are not really catered for aside from a pool table and chargable internet access.

The times for eating are very relaxed, food is served all day at the pool bar including salads, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, burgers, etc. and also at the on site Taverna in the evening until late. Breakfast is a limited menu without cereal or fruit and I'm not sure that it was good value as a B&B option. The Taverna, however, also offers a wonderful opportunity to watch a stunning sunset over the sea which can be enjoyed every evening with local dishes like Mousaka or Kleftiko.

We hired a car for three days which we found perfect for getting to the main resorts that were beyond walking or bussing. I would strongly reccomend Agíos Nicholaos (about 50 km east) and Rethymno (about 80km west). For nightlife, Malia seemed to be the first choice for many, just 15km or so east of Gournes, it has a thriving sea front with countless bars and tavernas. Parking doesn't seem to be an issue anywhere as people park everywhere !

Our tour operators offered a trip to Spinalonga, which is a tiny fortress island off the coast of Elounda, but choosing to drive there and buy our own boat ticket, proved to be much cheaper, and we weren't shuffled round with a guide or forced to attend the beach barbeque!

We found the heat very intense, temperatures touching on 40 degrees at times, drinking lots of water was crucial and it only takes a minute to get burned. Some days there is a strong breeze which comes as a very welcome relief, but some days it is still and I would recommend staying round the pool on those days.

Enjoy your holiday at the Golden Bay :)

" Gournes seems to get overlooked in... "

Gournes seems to get overlooked in favour of Gouves. Gournes is very quiet, with some lovely bars and tavernas. Try the Ambrosia in Gournes for value for money, authentic cuisine and variety. Greek salad is a must.

Turn left out of the front gates of The Golden Bay, you will find 3/4 supermarkets. Turn left also to the best Gournes beaches. The cig and tobacco prices are very good 60% cheaper than UK. Don't do what we did and wait for the duty free, as you won't get the choice of brands there.

A taxi to Kokkini Hani will cost 7 Euros, a taxi to Gournes will cost you 10 Euros.

The Golden Bay rooms are very clean spacious and cool. The hotel has lots of facilities, but we prefer the sea, and to go exploring in the evenings.

The noddy train which leaves from the Ambrosia is 8 Euros, and is an hour long trip that will take you around Gouves, and Kokkini Hani, so you can get your bearings.

Don't under estimate the heat! Take snorkel gear, and fishing rods.

Get a taxi to Gouves get them to drop you in the town centre, then walk down to the sea, the taverna's are better near the beach.

The bars in Gouves are lovely. Supermarkets in Gouves very well stocked, go early for croissant, doughnuts and backlava.

Enjoy

" I have just come back from a... "

I have just come back from a fortnight’s holiday and would highly recommend this resort and apartments.

As usual for Greece they are very basic, but the rooms were big and airy. Maid service every day and sheets changed every few days ensuring that apartments were kept very clean. Optional air con and a TV included.

Pool was quite small but it kept my 3 year old entertained. A mixture of all ages were at the apartments and a weekly Greek night on a Thursday. Food very appetising and good prices. Staff very helpful.

The resort of Gournes was very quiet but enough bars and taverna's to keep you going for a fortnight. Two lovely sandy beaches. Train ride over to Gouves is fun, although we didn't spend much time as it resembled Blackpool.

" I loved this place! We went as a... "

I loved this place! We went as a couple for our first holiday away together, when we got there we thought it was very small and were a bit worried, we also did not like our room because of where it was situated but they were very keen for us to be happy and changed our room straight away.

But after the first night there we never looked back the people were amazing, we felt like we came away with lots of new friends. The food was amazing whether it was a bar snack or from the restaurant and the whole experience was the best we could imagine!

We would definitely go back and Crete is such a great place but to be honest we didn't see much of Crete or the other restaurants because we were so happy with what Golden Bay had to offer we ate there everyday and never left the pool side. Will definitely take our children when we have some.
