I almost had my holiday spoilt at this venue by the numerous complaints! What was wrong with it? Not too much. It is cheap, which is why it is chosen by so many. I worried having seen some of the comments posted, we arrived prior to the complexs booking in time of 1400,... more

I was disappointed to find that Bayside was approx 10/15 mins drive from Albufeira. On arrival we found that our room with balcony turned out to be one with a terrace. It wasn't clean inside and the kitchen area was shabby, but we weren't eating in so we avoided that... more

I have just spent a very pleasant long weekend (sat- tues) at Bayside Salgados. The holiday is what you make it, if you sit in the apartment all the time, you will surly notice a few small faults (open door and terrace window, slight damp smell soon goes), but if you avail... more

ANY SENSE AVOID
Block 3*** We did our time there 7/14 sept 2007. To say it was very basic would be overating it. I found the femail staff very surley. The black mould around the bath was unpleasant apparently they have recently been renovated. ? A plus they did change the towels as stated they would but the bed linen should have been changed but was not. Early evacution was 10 o'clock with no courtesy room provided washing and changing around the pool shower area not very satisfactory. Never again it was by far one of the worst places we have stayed.
Had a great time!
After reading many of the negative reviews on this site I was a little anxious as we made our approach from the airport. The bus seemed to be getting further and further away from any signs of life as we got closer to the hotel. Once we got our bearings and got to know the area we discovered 5 or 6 bars/places to eat of differing styles and price ranges. The pasta place (Prima Pasta) was probably the pick of the bunch. As others have said, the beach is a fair walk away and there aren't many sun beds. Others told us that there were alternative beaches nearby so you may do well to search for these... The accomodation itself was fine. We were aware that the rooms didn't have a kettle but this didn't bother us. The air conditioning was useful on a night and was free. There is a large fridge and adequate utensils for preparing basic things for breakfast or a snack. The local supermarket is approx 5 minutes away and is very reasonably priced. The closest cash machine is also at the supermarket. The staff at the hotel were helpful other than the bus driver. You are best advised arriving early for the midday bus. We tended to alternate between staying local on an evening and going into the old town of Albufeira. The hotel can arrange to take you in via bus (approx 10 euros) and then a taxi back ranged from 6-10 euros. The queues for a taxi back were quite long between 22:30 and 01:00 so it was best to get an early night or extend your drinking a little longer! As two young twenty year olds we found plenty to do and met lots of really friendly and interesting people. The hotel did have its fair share of moaners about the most trivial issues, if you stay clear of these then you will have a wonderful time! I suppose the best compliment I can give is that I would go back at the drop of a hat! If anyone wants to get in touch then you can email me (Andrew) at glur[underscore]eio[at]hotmail[dot]com. My Spin on Bayside
Stayed at the bayside salgados from 21st august till 4th september (just got home yesterday) 1st thing i want to say is that it is not as bad as a lot of people made out on here i was dreading going when i read all the reviews on here! me and my partner in our 20's went with our 19 month old son, absolutely nothing for kids what so ever everything is so far away only 2 restaurants and a supermarket within a 20 minute walk. Rooms were clean and tidy had everything u would need except a kettle and toaster which u had 2 pay 1 euro per day for each. The beach is about a 20-25 minute walk and u can never get any sunbeds! Few families we met there's mobile phones got stolen from their rooms all within a week, only access to the rooms are via the cleaners as they have a master key these people complained to reception staff who just shrugged their shoulders they didnt want to know. reccomend u invest in a safe (20 euro for 14 nights) dont leave valuables lying out. Go to the salgados diner aswell they do a great full english for 5 euros. Also try not to break anything from the kitchen area u get charged excessive prices for the items! 40 euro if u damage the frying pan/pot/milk pot which is around 29 pounds! 1 euro 50 cents per glass u break and 1 euro 50 for any cutlery. When we checked out we got charged 15 euros (10 quid) for a towel we had made a small stain on by accident! the barman ricardo was very friendly he stays in the bar till 2am some times if their is more than 5 people left still drinking. Hotel food was ok but recommend salgados diner they do a great home made lasagne for 9 euros (£6.50) and also have pizzas to take out. With us having a little 1 we couldnt go 2 many bars as he would get grumpy very quickly so most nights we spent in the hotel bar all they play is 60-70s music we asked for it to be changed 1 evening for an hour and were told no. everyone is in their late 30s-40s nothing for the younger people, spoken to a lot of couples during my stay and everyone of them said they wouldnt come back to bayside. Weather was in its 30s most of the time, we had a thunderstorm a couple of days after we arrived was raining into the morning then got very warm at around 5pm. Also the cats are very friendly we fed 2 of them for 2 weeks they used to follow us and yam for me 2 clap it :) definatley go back to portugal but not bayside, a lot of construction work going on all around. Got a letter saying the pool was going to be closed for 2 hours for maintenence and that 2 hours became 2 days and no one was told! Pints in the hotel are 3 euro 50 and alcopops are 3 euro 50 aswell. Cans of cola and orange etc were 45 cents (20p) from the supermarket oceano. would have been ok if we didnt have a young kid as we could have got a taxi 2 albufeira at night to escape the dreadful music lol hope you enjoy ur stay if u go here but i wouldnt advise u 2 if u are going with young kids. the kids area at the pool is filthy and full of cat poo and pee.
bus driver is a sweetie really!
The first impression of Bayside Salgados is that is situated in mostly dirt track, dusty and half built buildings. All over the Algarve there is a massive building program so you are going to hear and see building work, which is more than on reason why the Bayside rates are so cheap. When the resort is finished I am sure prices will double. The reception and the bar/restaurant are very clean and the staff very helpful. Our rooms were of a decent standard for a 3 star hotel, but would rate Bayside more as a 2 star hotel. They are very nice rooms, not too big and they were cleaned every day except Sunday although they don't change the towels or sheets every day, there was a notice on our door telling us when they did change them and if we ever needed anything we just asked at reception. Provided are all the amenities you would need including satellite TV and Air con – but you must ask at reception for the remote controls for both (no charge!). Balcony doors lock both sides. Suggest you request a first floor apartment as they have balcony, whilst the ground floor opens on to a terrace or a lawn (and seem a bit darker). We stayed half board - but if we were to do self catering the kitchen area had everything we would have needed, there was a large fridge and everything was provided even a mixing bowl and a tea towel! The cooking facilities were limited though – a two ring hob - but we did have a microwave oven. The food served in the hotel although basic it was good. The menu for the dish of the day didn’t explain what was in the dish e.g. Portuguese Fish – it was actually fish done in a sauce of tomato, onion and garlic served with boiled potato – very tasty! There is also a menu if whats on offer is not what you want the usual burger or ribs or steak averaging at about 5-12 euros. Renting a safe is very cheap 12.50 euros for 9 days – would recommend this – it seems strange that when you rent the safe that they give you the key and also the locking system with it (rent one - you’ll see). The Bayside is no where near a beach, but a hot dusty up hill walk will give you the first glimpse of the sea! From the hotel it’s a five minute walk to get to the beach, but it’s a nice large beach. There are two more cove beaches further along populated mostly by Portuguese – no body bothers you and there’s the occasional bloke going past selling sandwiches or ice-cream. It costs 12.50 euros for 2 sun beds and a parasol. The beach at Gale which is about a 10 minute walk is superb - lovely soft sand and 3 bars / restaurants all nice with free toilets and showers. The apartments are a taxi ride from Albufeira (cost about 7 euros) and there can be a 10 minute wait for taxis - but as long as you don't mind this then you should have a good time! Although most brochures and websites will tell you this is Albufeira it’s not. I would probably place this hotel nearer Gale than Albufeira. The resort itself is fairly quiet and a little outside Albufeira so we would get a taxi in of an evening. There is a free bus, 3 times a day only taking only 8 people into Albufeira, and the driver is mad and moody (the man is a legend!) but be warned though he is one of the most miserable and rudest people you will ever meet. He always shouts at people for opening the doors or even touching them! Everything seems is too much trouble for him. It’s quite funny to see him in action. Usually the mid-day bus is busy and if you are there promptly at 12 O’clock and the bus is full he will come back for you – if you are there waiting after that time he tells you in no uncertain terms what he thinks (funny when you’re not on the receiving end!) I think it’s an act he puts on for the tourists! Eating out – if you want somewhere to eat you will have to be prepared for a good walk. There’s a nice small cafe serving food (it is really the local bakery and they do nice sandwiches and drinks at very reasonable prices also. Further on along the road toward the beach (5 minute walk) is a restaurant/bar called O Faro very stylish with its flowing drapes but is quite expensive beer 4 euros a pint where as most bars its about 2 euros. Walking from the Bayside as if going to Albufeira is a small tea room with some unusual decoration in the courtyard and on the roof – a model ox head with green glowing eyes and a cat on the roof with red glowing eyes but the lady and her mother make you feel very welcome and do nice specialty teas and snacks. The star restaurant is the Salgados Mar the food is fantastic!! They do typical Portuguese cuisine – maybe a bit dearer but well worth the money. They make their own wine and a litre jug costs 8 euros – really good value. I would say to anyone who is visiting this hotel not to be put off by other reviews, the hotel was great. After reading other holiday reviews on the Bayside Salgados we were worried about staying there but when we arrived we were very pleasantly surprised. Recommended!
great middle of nowhere - loved it
The hotel itself is nothing extraoridinary. The rooms (well actually apartments) are decent size, well equipped (kitchen, although we did not really use it). Maid service everyday, although I would argue about its quality. I work in a sort of apartment hotel myself, so I can be nasty about that :). Staff is nice and helpful. Not in a hurry, but well... after all it is Portugal: sun, beach, a glass of porto.. life is beautiful, why hurry :). Swimming pool - well it is there, clean and taken care of. Pretty crowded as well. Get up early to reserve a place on the longer next to the pool. Or better... go to the beach :). There are 2 to choose from. Gale and Salgados. Gale beach is 10 minutes walk, and veery charming: sand, nice rocks (I took dozens of pictures of water splashes :) ), Salgados beach is rather boring... a wide stripe of sand and that's it. It is about 20 minutes away from the hotel. Both beaches were quite empty (beging of June), the weather was great, but the ocean freezing... I am glad to have chosen this hotel. What I wanted was peace and quiet, nice views around (well, maybe except the construction site just behind the hotel wall), not crowded. I marked overall experience - excellent, even though the hotel was not perfect. Just relaxed and did not worry about trivial things.
not as bad but not 5 star either
Hi I have just come back for a week stay at the bayside and it wasnt as bad as some of the other reviews said. The rooms were small there were three of us and you could not really swing a cat in the room there we two beds and a sofa bed(last one in got that haha). The rooms got hot at night but you could pay for air con. There was security on the apartment complex so if you wanted to bring someone back with you this was a no no as some times they did check the numbers etc... But all n all we had a good time, rooms were cleaned every day the beach is just down the road and about 10e into town in the evening as the free bus stops at 3.30in the day which I taught was a bit mean but over all good experience to have, as they say you make your own fun!
Not as bad as people say
After reading previous reviews we were nervous about what we were going to.First impression was its in the middle of nowhere. After exploring the area & asking others we found a shop & bar on the corner,5 other bars/restaurants nearby, furthest approx 15 min walk (turn right out hotel door, left at top of road & keep walking, road veres off to right,at the end of the junction, almost opposite to the right is the one we enjoyed the most, stopping off at 3 bars on the way). A large supermarket is also 5/10 min walk with the beach opposite(take your own parasols as cannot hire them),route to here is walk past the shop on the corner and keep on that side, walk to the right hand corner of the apartments here and theres a sandy walk way, walk through and turn to the right at the end bringing you onto the supermarket carpark. We had 3 rooms in total, all with seperate bedrooms and air con, all very clean, maids everyday and towells almost everyday (we put dirty ones in beday & they were always replaced), sheets changed regularly too.Nice clean decor, looked like new curtains, nice tiled floors. No kettle but took a travel one.We had ground floor, which was nice as opened onto patio and large grassed area for our son to play football.(dont leave anything out on a night as sprinlkers come on for the grass ) Decent sized pool , not too deep, small jacuzzi/ kids pool, pool side bar, and playarea with sand pit, each block of apartments has jacuzzis on ,so plenty to keep kids ammused. Entertainment at indoor bar, about 3 nights a week, not that great but better then nothing, snooker table and internet in bar for kids. Free bus to albufeira, last one at 1530 so we got own taxi on a night , between 8 and 10euros each way.Bus driver does drive fast but i suppose he knows the roads like the back of his hands. The reception has leaflets on every excursion going, which pick you up from the hotel, we did the waterpark , but there are cruises, trips to lisbon, spain etc . All in all we made our own fun as there were 12 of us , if wed have gone as a family of 4, wed have gone through to albufeira more often.
Not as bad as i thought!
After reading this website i was dreading going away! I have just returned from 2 weeks at Bayside Salgados and it was nothing like the reviews i have seen on this site! When we arrived at the apartments the gentleman on reception was very helpful, he gave us a little map which showed us where we were and were the nearest beach/shop/restaurant was. We stayed in a studio apartment and it was very nice, the bedroom area is raised slightly above the Kitchen/lounge area. The bathroom was big with a shower over bath, large sink area and hairdryer, There was a big wardrobe with shelves and plenty of hangers. Yes the kitchen was very basic but we didnt want to be cooking big meals so it wasn't a problem. There was a tv and we could get channel 1 and ITV. The pool was ok but if you want to get anywhere near the pool u have to be up early to get your towel on a lounger - somepeople where getting up about 6.30/7am. We didnt really go in the pool but on the top of each block there are roof top jaccuzzi's!! Ok they are not your usual jaccuzzi - they were coldish! Hardly anyone went up there so we found that we had the whole roof to ourselves most of the time. Plenty of room to sunbathe and thena quick dip in the jaccuzzi to keep you cool (and away from kids)! In an evening we either went to one of teh local restaurants or we went into the Old Town. The hotel runs a free mini bus service into town during the day for free but we never used this. At night you can either ask reception to ring you a taxi or they will drop you in for 10 Euros per family which i dint think was bad! Just got to reception and tell them what time you want to go in! There are loads of bars/restaurants and shops int he Old Town and there is just one main taxi rank and ther can sometimes be a que for getting back. It was also cold in the evnings so i would recommend a jumper! The beach is very nice, and just miles and miles of sand. There arent many sunbeds but on teh 1st day we got really burnt without an umbrella - they are really cheap in teh shop on teh corner! The beach is prob a 10 mins walk to Gale Beach and 20 mins walk to Salgados Beach. Come out of the apartments and turn right and then just follow the signs. When u get near to teh beach you can see a big brown hut on the beach - that is Salgados beach. however if you cut left (you should see cars and other people doing this) then you get to Gales beach which is much closer! There was a small play area for kids but prob not much else to do, but we had a lovely relaxing hol! Ideal if you just want to go away and do nothing!!!
Nice apartments, good swimming pool, great local restaurants
At first when we got dropped off we thought we were in the middle of nowhere. We had only stayed in Albufeira before and Bayside Salgados is about 5km from there (7 - 10 euros in a taxi). Once we had found our feet and explored a little we found that there are a lot of excellent restaurants locally, all in walking distance. Prima Pasta (lovely Italian food, englsh run), Salgados Mar (excellent food, silver service), Salgados Bar (most dishes served, english run) are only three of the many that we went to. There were also more in the next resort, Gale, which is a 20 minute walk away. Pool was a decent size and was cleaned everyday. Entertainment at Bayside was good, local chap (who also runs the nearby shop) does a great job as a DJ There is a shuttle bus put on by the hotel to Albufeira three times a day (and pick up) but the last times are approx. 4 pm. This was far too early. The last one should have been around 8.30 pm. Overall a great holiday and we would recommend it for anyone who just wants to relax and chill out.
Not as bad as I thought it would be
I was terrfied when I read the other reviews but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Yes there is building work going on nearby but that only affects one side of the hotel, we couldn't even hear the diggers from our rooms. The weather was terrible but to be fair to the bus driver when there were 20 people waiting for the bus at 12.30pm he came back to take the rest in. The beach is a 10 minute walk but well worth it, the weather was better there. I would strongly recommend hiring a car if you don't want to walk too far. Every meal we had was gorgeous, the View Bar which is about 1 mile away did gorgeous meals and they also ran a taxi service which would pick you up from hotel and take you to the pub and also to albuferia and back if you wanted to. The salgados diner about 1/2 miles up the road did gorgeous ribs and there are 3 restaurants next to each other,m primapasta is one of them. The nearest place to eat is the salgadosmar- do not miss it. The waiter Pedro will do anything for anyone, he even gave us a lift home when it was raining. They do a great dish called cataplanna which is either meat or fish but Pedro will change any ingredients for you. I admit there is nothing there for children but the beer was cheap and its ok for a break. You need to be to able to walk quite far though if you want to see the sights.
