The Cala D’Or Playa Apartments were...

Jul 2006, Miss I Wiking

The Cala D’Or Playa Apartments were truly superb. I am 17, and stayed in Cala D’Or with three friends of the same age. It is a strongly family orientated complex, yet I didn't find this to be overpowering. The entertainment team seemed great at keeping the children occupied; but not only this, they had things that the adults could take part in (such as bingo for a cash jackpot and football). The children especially liked Gideon; he was a jovial chap who was really full of beans from the start of the day right until the end.
The most important element of the Cala D’Or Playa apartments that made our holiday so comfortable would be the holiday reps. They were a really cracking team, but especially Marc, who always greeted the guests with a smile and never failed to offer a helping hand. The balconies were of a tremendously generous size; especially useful when we got trapped on ours (we accidentally closed the door to keep the air-conditioning on whilst all of our party was on the balcony). The pool was exceptionally clean, as were all facilities and apartments.
I feel that due to the plethora of restaurants around Cala D’Or, prices had to be and were very competitive; many serving main courses for a mere 5 euros, and wine for around 6 euros! Contrary to a previous review, I found the air-conditioning was an acceptable price at 35 euros or thereabouts for a week and really made the July weather bearable. My one tip to anyone considering a stay here is that the pool can be slightly intense at times, as they have speakers dotted around to carry out all of the entertainment.
This resulted in music, bingo numbers or just general wailings blaring all around the pool, however it was tolerable as it all went hand in hand with the cheery atmosphere of the place. To sum up, ideal accommodation for family holidays and trips with friends alike.

Can you ever give 10/10? Hard but very close.
Back to Cala D'or Playa apartments for the second year. You cannot ask much more than the overall cleanliness and friendliness of this complex. We stayed for 2 weeks this year and had a glorious time.
With the Cala Gran beach just a short walk away, the road train stop to the Marina just outside the back of the complex, getting around was easy.
Just one minor problem, (that stopped us rating 10/10). We were in a ground floor apartment, and every time the toilet upstairs flushed you could hear the water running down the pipe, which was concealed behind the bedroom wall.
The short stroll to the centre opened up masses of eating venues and if you want to try the best Chinese you have ever had, (in our opinion), try the Chinese restaurant in the centre, they speak very good English, (from Hong Kong), and the food is excellent.
If you have a family, these apartments are well worth a visit. The entertainment is first class and the 3 staff work hard to keep the kids amused, check out the kids disco at 9pm most nights, its manic, and what can you say about Busy Bee.
No problems going back

Just back and cannot praise this...

Jul 2006, Mr D N

Just back and cannot praise this apartment complex and resort enough.
What I would say is that although the First choice reps are very friendly, approachable and helpful, the real reason this holiday was such a resounding success is down to the entertainment staff consisting of Flip, Debbie and Styn.
They work their fingers to the bone; they are there from early morning until last thing at night. The Kids cannot get enough of them, but they are never "in your face". If you could bottle and sell their enthusiasm and energy, they would be millionaires. I don’t know how my 2-year-old daughter will survive back home without her nightly fix of the Buzzy Bee disco.
The complex is clean, staff are very friendly, location is ideal for 2 of the popular beaches and its no more than a pleasant stroll from the resort.
What I cannot understand is the rating that First Choice gave this hotel. According to the brochure it’s "2 keys". In my humble opinion, this rating is bizarre and why it is not higher I will never understand.

Jun 2006, Mrs T Waring

We have just arrived back from 1 week in the Cala D'or apartments and have had brilliant time. We went as a family with our 2 daughters aged 5 & 3. The apartments were very clean & the balcony was a great size. The beach area & play area was always spotless.
The bar staff were very friendly and always polite. Most importantly I would have to comment on how great the entertainment staff were, they didn’t pester you, but for my girls they couldn't do enough for them. Our evenings eventually were ruled by the us being back at the apartments for the children’s disco at 9pm, till late evening, where the girls had a fab time. Adult games came later with no forcing people to take part.
Overall we had a marvelous time & wish we had gone for 2 weeks not just 1.

Jun 2006, Miss K Gracey

I went to Cala D'Or Playa for a week with my mum as a 21st birthday present.
At first the apartments seemed quite a distance from the centre of the resort but they were actually just a nice walk away.
The apartments themselves were ultra-clean and very well maintained. the only complaint I would have is that there is no air conditioning unless you're willing to pay for it. The balcony was huge and also quite private.
We were mainly looking for a quiet holiday, and I think I was either the oldest child or the youngest adult in the entire area!! The staff were fantastic and always willing to help, they even gave me a bottle of champagne on my birthday.
The whole place is very family-orientated, which obviously is good if you have young children.
The pool area was kept very clean and there are plenty of sun beds. I would disagree with whoever wrote in another review about the drink being expensive - it was 4.60 for a spirit and mixer, which i think is about average. All in all, a very pleasant, relaxing stay.

May 2006, Mrs H Cross

My husband and I and two other couples have just spent a week at the Cala D'Or Playa. Apartments were very clean and really well equipped. Pool area was very relaxing and all the staff most helpful. The entertainment was good enough for children of 12 and under so for families it would be great. It is a very pretty resort with lots of lovely coves to walk to. We spent some time at the marine admiring all the yachts and also toured the resort on the little train which gave us an opportunity to see areas we had not covered.
We ate and drank for as low as 60 Euros for 6 of us and as high as 120 Euros. There are many restaurants but basically they all have the same menu. As it was May it was very quiet and most of the bars/restaurants were quite empty.
We only had one problem and that was changing money and this at only one place. Most banks/exchange shops charge 2% commission for travelers cheques (£100), but at a place in the square opposite the taxi rank and police station we were charged 15 cents in the Euro. This was after asking what the rate was and being told that commission was only 15 cents, admittedly we did not ask if that was on the Euro or on the full amount.
Therefore we were charged 15 Euros and against the bank and other exchange shops of 2 euros this was very high. We asked if we could reverse the transaction and they refused. They charged an elderly couple next to us the same and they were devastated. The shop assistant said he could do nothing he only worked there. We think that they should advertise that it is 15 cents on the Euro but if they did that nobody would go there.
This exchange shop was situated at Carrer F Tarrago No. 2, I suggest you avoid it or ensure that you find out exactly what they will charge before you use it. We liked Cala D'Or very much and it is the first time I have heard my husband say that he would go back.

Fantastic!!! Loved every minute. I was frightened about taking a young baby abroad, they staff, facilities, everything, fantastic.
The staff can never do too much for you and are friendly. The entertainment night and day is very good and enjoyable. There is loads to do around Cala d ‘Or if you fancy a venture out.
The nightlife in the local area (approx 1/2 mile) is lively and fun, even in early season. I have been to the same place for the fourth time this May, it is a great place.

We went to the Cala D'or Playa...

Aug 2005, Mrs J Tompkins

We went to the Cala D'or Playa Apartments last August (2004) and found that it was a good place for families with teenagers to stay, so went again this year.
The rooms are immaculate and so is the entire complex. The pool area is kept clean and is great fun for all ages. They have games going on every day, which kept the kids off their parents' backs!!
The hotel is situated very central once you get your bearings. You can go to the town centre from the front of the hotel or through the gardens at the rear and turn right. The choice of places to eat is very varied, as are the prices. You can feed a family of 4 for as little as £20 (with drink).
Because the hotel has mainly English and Irish guests we made some really good friends and have kept in contact since our return.
I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone who prefers a more sedate holiday, as there are many arranged activities for all ages to take part in, but for us we thoroughly enjoyed it and are hopefully going back next year (as are a few of the families we got friendly with).
I must mention that my 14 year old son had an accident late one night at the hotel (his own fault I might add - kids being kids and all that!) and the staff on reception were excellent and within 25 minutes of the first phone call to a doctor being made, both him and myself were being whisked off in an ambulance to Palma Hospital for further medical attention. I have to say that I’m sure we would not have received the same care and treatment in England (sad but true).
Definitely a must for any outgoing, friendly families.

We had a fantastic holiday at the...

Jul 2004, Mrs M Swan

We had a fantastic holiday at the Cala D Or Playa - especially our 5 year old who had the time of his life as there was a great kids club and loads of other children there. Also the complex was really friendly with all the other guests being English/Irish.
The apartments were clean and really well equipped with everything from a kettle to a coffee maker! The only problem was that there was air conditioning but it was really expensive so we decided not to bother and it was boiling! The rooms were quite big and the balconies were massive which was fantastic. Although the rooms were meant to be cleaned 5 times a week, our room wasn’t, so we had to take our rubbish to the bins quite a few times but that was our only complaint about cleanliness - the complex as a whole was really clean.
The pool was lovely and really warm for a change! Even our 5 month old enjoyed the water. The only problem was that although there were loads of sun beds the usual reserving with towels thing happened even though it wasn’t meant to, so if you wanted a bed, you had to grab your sun bed fairly early - although usually mid morning would do - not 6 o clock or anything!
The bar staff especially were really friendly and the reception staff were polite and efficient. Although we hardly saw our rep and to be honest she messed up the only thing we asked her to do - arrange a trip for us - the kid’s club reps were fantastic and really friendly. Our son is really shy and he got on really well with them and had a great time at the club.
There was entertainment every night, but mostly it was pretty naff - the kids enjoyed it, but for us grown ups it was pretty grim! A lot of miming to songs and silly games and a particularly dire mime artist!?!!! Also the bar was VERY expensive.
The location of the apartments was ok, but not ideal for us as it seemed to be between the two main areas of restaurants so it involved quite a walk, wherever you wanted to go to eat.
The restaurants were also VERY pricey, especially in the town so we ended up going to the same cafe every night in the last week because the food was nice and cheap and the wine was REALLY cheap (5 euros a litre!)
The resort itself is ok, but I wouldn’t rush back. It’s a fair size, but it was a bit far for us to walk to the centre for dinner and back with the kids. There were loads of touristy shops, but they all sold the same things so little variety. There were 2 mini golf’s, and they were good and the beaches looked quite nice, though we never went because they got quite crowded as they are VERY small, especially Cala Esmerelda.
The mini train is quite good to get an overall view of the resort and its worth getting to see the marina, but don’t bother walking - it takes far too long and the restaurants are crowded and pricey.
All in all, we had a lovely holiday and we all enjoyed ourselves, but I think I’ve seen Cala D or now and I don’t think I’ll be back for a while. But you will enjoy your time at the Cala D Or Playa - especially if you’ve got kids.

Jul 2003, Ms D Brandrick

The Cala D Or Playa Apartments are an extremely good choice for families. The children’s club was fantastic with all day entertainment for the kids. The reps even organised days out, giving the adults a bit of time alone. The apartments were clean, spacious and well equipped. The only thing missing was air conditioning, however, you could hire electric fans from reception.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. The resort itself was lovely. The only thing that let it down for us was the fact that at night the place was full of restaurants and karaoke bars. There was no other form of entertainment. Well worth a visit though.
