This is the second time we have been to Riu Cancun Hotel, we went four years ago the same time of year, I have to say standards have dropped, the rooms could do with some refirbishment, they smelt of damp and by the end of 2 weeks so did all our clothes.
The staff were extremely friendly, the food was fantastic but I am afraid the drunken Americans let the Hotel down badly. Not only were they drinking all day in the swim up bar but they ould then row all night causing many disturbances.
We took 36 guest on holiday with us this time and had promised them a fantastic holiday, I think most of our party had disturbances in the night and had to call security... very dis-appointing. Never experienced this on our last visit.

In reply to Mrs L Grant who attended the Riu in May 2008 with Thomson: I'm sorry you failed to have a good time at the Riu for your Honeymoon, i how ever had an amazing time with my wife on ours.
Mexico is lovely, as is the hotel. The staff are so friendly and woud do anthing for you. I agree with the pool being over run by Americans but i suppose it is there version of Spain for the British (a cheap get away, especially with the age of consent for drinking in America being 21).
We must've been in a quiet spot of the hotel as we didn't hear a hoot throughout the night in the corridors.
Throughout the the day, there was plenty of entertainment for both adults an children (if your reading this and have been then you wll know Alesandrjo is nuts - muy bien very good! okaaaayyy!!) but on the other hand the entertainment at night finished at 22.30hrs and left us wanting a bit, especially with the only other option was to drink in the bar all night or go into Cancun.
I would definatly reccommend the hotel to others and to be honest, when were booking our future holidays, we'll be looking for a Riu hotel to stay in.

Fantastic....Abosolutely fantastic! I went with my finace and in-laws to be in June for 2 weeks and I can't complain about a single thing. Infact, we're honeymooning there next year! The hotel is fantastic, the staff can't help you enough, the beach, pools and weather make it a great hotel to stay at/holiday. Highly recommended.
Nightlife in Cancun is brilliant, Coco Bongos is must for all, no matter what the age! The Pirate Ship on a night and the Platinum Cruise (Dolphin Swim at Dolphin Discovery) is also highly reccommended.
Take US dollars as you get a better rate in the shops!

weve both just got back from cancun. had a great time at the riu cancun. the staff were exceptional with the exception of one. selene, she works in the main restaraunt and his horrid ! food great, drinks 24hr. entertainment good 1st week.repeated. pools great but do not go in the swim up bar pool!!!!!!!!! if you look at it on a nite, youll know what i mean!!!!!! beach great, hotel in great position. very clean. rooms need painting now looking a little worn. regarding trips, tulum absolute garbage ! every were roped off, u can walk round in 10 mins. chikita, miles away and waste of money. dolphin, speed boat trips great. take u.s dollars and loads of small ones. its probably the only time the americans will come in handy, 90per cent are a nightmare!!!!!!! . they wont bother u though, as they are to buy posing in all the mirrors!!!! have a great time. ps go with a tan so the mexicans will leave you a lone, i told everyone i leave tomorrow, everyday! it worked !

Fantastic!! Me and my boyfriend went for 2weeks the best holiday ever!!
The hotel was beautiful very nicely kept, our room was cleaned every day replace with clean sheets and towles and the maid was so nice puttin petals on our bed and makin swans in shape of a love heart out of towels, just makin our stay even more perfect.
The food was good with a diffrent theme every night in the main restaurant, so much choice and so nice. There was another restaurant which is outside serving snacks pretty much all day. Also a very good selection of drinks to try, ha ha!!
The entertainers were a good laugh and very helpful, they arranged a night out to a diffrent club every night. There was a show on every night of the week the one we enjoyed was Michael Jackson and the international show. The Pacha nightclub is not much good only holds 200 people and the music is terrible.
It can get a little boring during the day somtimes but you always end up makin friends. The beach is amazing no matter how hot the sand is cool and the ocean is warm. On a Thursday look out for an ape called coco is so funny about 4ft tall who lights cigs, drinks beer and stick the middle finger up. You can hav your pic taken with the ape for about 10 dollars, well worth it!!
I would hav rated this a 10 only SOME American people got on a lot of peoples nerve, been so loud and sick in the pool. There was big groups all hangin aroud the pool bar they would start drinkin when the bar opened and stop when they fell over I saw people fall flat on there face and hav to be took away on a strecher unconsciuos, discusting!!
Don't let all that put you off there is plenty of other pools and things to do to avoid them until they go home. We really enjoyed it did'nt want to come home.
We will definatly go back to the Riu Cancun.
So hav a great holiday, hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

My Husband and i got married in...
1 / 10
Jun 2008, Mrs L Grant

My Husband and i got married in Gretna Green, Scotland and wished we had stayed there for our honeymoon. On arrival at the hotel we expected to be greeted warmly with flowers and some kind of welcome as in the brochure.requested a double bed with being on our honeymoon. When we got there two singles pushed together large beds but not something you would expect on a honeymoon. No gifts of welcome. We enjoyed the first three days then my husband got food poisioning from hrs i had to pay £1,175 upfront for expenses. This had just been refunded to me today from barclays additions so if you do not have money dont expect Barclays to cough up for you before you get home. He was very ill and i had to pay up. On returning to the hotel after he came out of hospital he was afraid to eat the food as he was told by the doctor in the hospital that the chefs do not wash the fruit and veg with puified water and this causes several cases of poisioning to the holiday makers. After my husband was feeling a bit better we decided to go back out on the catamaran as we had done the previous week. We enjoyed it apart from having to pay $40 to be brought back in. They said we could go out the second time and we would be given a lesson with one of their team. We got on the catamaran and were pushed by three people, none accompanying us. We were out for 20 mins and the wind picked up and we were travelling at some speed. My husband was unable to conntrol it and it capsized throwing us to the sea. I banged my legs and mouth and badly banged my lower spine. I did not go to hospital as we had paid a lot of our money out for George and i was also scared because of the language barrier. We were so annoyed as it took at least 15 mins to be rescued did not even say sorry. I was in great pain the remainder of the holiday (7 days) and it spoiled our honeymoon. The pools are crowded and the bar pool was like a big toilet, americans drunk and being initimate in the pool. This was seen on several occasssions. The corridors were very noisy and we had three power cuts during our stay that we know of. Once getting stuck in the elevator. It was so scary as it lasted for at least 20 mins. I can honestly say Mexico was a beautiful place spoiled by the Americans and the hotel is definitely not up to the standard of a 5 star. I would give it 2. DO NOT GO THERE FOR YOU HONEYMOON!!!!!!!

Jan 2008, Ms M Ogeia

I spent one week at Christmas in the Riu Cancun resort in Mexico, and it was my first attempt at an all inclusive holiday.
We ended up choosing this option because the price was so much better than buying all the holiday items separately, and it allowed us to save quite a large amount of money.
The hotel was quite good: great bedrooms (huge king-size bed) always very clean a good choice of swimming pools or a small beach (and always a lounger available, although of course, the best located ones got full quite early), very good choice of restaurants.
There was usually a big queue to book seating’s in the 2 restaurants that required it, but we discovered that we really didn't need it, as the other 2 restaurants (no reservation required) were quite good and always with a good selection of food.
Everything was included, including drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
The location was quite good too, depending on what you wanted to see - you couldn't exactly walk to the shopping centres, but there were always buses available.
All-in-all, a very good relaxing holiday.

Came back from Mexico at the end of...
10 / 10
Jan 2008, Miss A.C Stevens

Came back from Mexico at the end of November and I want to go back!
The hotel was perfect; it was so clean and tidy. The maids would clean our room daily, well I say daily, but by the end of the second week the late nights starting catching up on us and we started lying in but this wasn't a problem to the maid as she would come and say hello and tell you she would come back later. We had a really nice maid who left me and my friend little notes wishing us a good holiday and other stuff and made swans and teddy bears out of towels for us, very nice.
The food at the hotel was also quite good, things like the desserts were abit bland, and some didn’t even taste of anything but other than that it was good. We mostly ate in the buffet which has lots of choice and I found something nice to eat every day. I would not recommend the Brazilian restaurant, there were four of us and they brought out a small plate with literally two carrots, three green beans and two potatoes. Wasn't so pleased about that. The snacks in the day were very good, there were things like burgers and the hotdogs were very good and the ice creams were delicious! There was so much choice you really couldn't complain.
The staff at the hotel were very polite; they couldn’t do enough for you. The bar staff at the theatre were very nice, they would make me different cocktails and shots which were very nice and if you didn’t like them they would throw them away and make you another one!
The animation team made the hotel what it was, they were so lovely and friendly and very funny. They would do lots of activities in the day which I said I would never join in on but by the second week we decided we would join in. Each night they would go to different clubs and invite you along, me and my friend loved going out with them, it’s like we had known them forever. Abby and Hiram were so lovely!
The pools and the beach were beautiful, they were both very clean and a waiter would come along the beach ask if you wanted food or drink and they would bring it to you which I thought was very nice.
The hotel is well located, it is about a 4-5 minute walk to the main club area (cannot hear noise or anything from the hotel though) which is definitely a must to do, especially coco bongos, it was brilliant. The shows are good, they start about 11pm and end about 1pm or 2pm, but then after that the real club gets going. If you are into R&B, dancehall, hip hop then you should definitely go it's amazing, one of the bests clubs I have ever been to. If you are into the dance sort of music then I recommend the Club Basic on the lagoon, thats about a 15 minute walk but if you go with the animation team at the hotel they get a coach to take you all to the clubs, even if it was two minutes away!
The area around the hotel I found very safe and even if you travel outside the area of your hotel its safe enough, me and my friend who are both 18 got on the bus and went downtown and to the shopping malls and we felt very safe on our own.
There is also a small shopping mall across the road from the hotel; it has some nice clothes shops, and a chemist and a subway and Starbucks. There is also a KFC and Pizza Hut just around the corner which was nice.
The people at the hotel also don’t' expect a tip, they will do anything for you anyway but we did tip at the end of our holiday because the staff were just so friendly we felt it was wrong not too.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, it was perfect, very clean and tidy and the staff were very polite and friendly, it really was a beautiful 5 start hotel. I would most definitely return to Mexico and this hotel again!

Stayed at the Riu Cancun in June 2007...

Oct 2007, Mr R Leach

Stayed at the Riu Cancun in June 2007 and had a fantastic holiday. The hotel is right on the sea front and has its own beach! There are 4 pools, 2 are infinity pools and one is the pool bar which is the best pool bar I have ever seen! Free beach towels are provided for use on the beach as well as by the pool, keeps the weight down in your suit case :-)
The food is of a high standard and although we were there for 14 nights we had plenty of choice and you need not eat the same meal twice, breakfast is amazing as there is so much to choose from. There is a Japanese restaurant which is included but you do need to book, however it is well worth it.
Obviously alcohol is included and there is plenty of it, which includes a fully stocked fridge and optics in your room. The pool bar serves the yummiest frozen cocktails.
The rooms are spacious and kept beautifully clean, we were on the 14th floor and had the most gorgeous view over the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
All of the staff are friendly and cannot do enough, although they expect a tip for everything but then this is common place.
The only thing that was slightly annoying was the large volume of American guests for no other reason but the noise they make, everything is 'whop whop' which can get on your nerves and the majority of them can be quite rude. This is not enough to put me off going there again though so don't let that put you off.
Overall fantastic, if your booked then lucky you, if not...WHY??
