My familly and I love Malta and the Pergola,we have had two lovely holidays there in 2007 and 2009 I have just booked again for August 2011. We found the Hotel Staff to be friendly and efficient, and the facilities well presented and clean.
We have always stayed in peak season and like most popular hotels it is busy, I would guess it is operating at or near capcity at that time of year. I notice that many of the poor reviews have been from out of season holidaymakers.
Our kids were 7 & 9 when we first went, they love swimming, the hotel has 3 pools all of which are kept well in high season, I have no idea whether any of them are heated, it isn't required in July/August - the indoor one is cooler than the outside ones in the morning. You can also swim in the sea at the nearby beach - the water is very clear and shallow but don't expect to walk ther from the hotel. The distance is not far but the road is very steep with hairpin bends and gets extremely busy with all types of vehicle in the summer as it is the main road to the ferry port. All manner of watersports, boat trips, diving etc are available from the beach area, the water around Malta is very good for diving.
The first time we stayed was in a one bedroom apartment on a B&B basis, The appartment was spacious, clean and well equipped, the aircon was ice cold (The aircon wasn't quite as good the next time tho).
After trying the hotel restuarant I had no hesitation in booking the same appartment on a half board basis for the second visit, for 2011 we will have a 2 bed apartment and half board again, a slight criticism of the food is that there seemed to be more tinned fruit on the second visit - it was all fresh the first time.
The main restuarant is a buffet style and a good one, good, fresh, tasty, interesting food "themed evenings" a barbercue once a week - something for everyone. There is also a pizzaria run by the hotel which is good value.
Although the village of Mellieha has the main road running through it (the road is just far enough from the hotel not to be a nuisance), it is a fairly quiet village with little in the way of nightlife. This suits us but if you want to go clubbing it won't. There is regular entertainment in the hotel of varying quality, the best is Johnny Gee the country singer, unless you really dislike country & western this Guy is a "must see".
Mellieha has a good bus service to the rest of the island - again these are very busy in summer. Due to it's strategic position as a military base in the Mediteranean,Malta has a very rich history and is definately worth exploring.
That's about it really, sorry for rambling
- Advice: looking forward to going again - just booked it
- Board Basis:B&B then half board

Very nice hotel. Got to get used to the lift system or you end up using the stairs all the time. Not ideal for disabled persons. Staff very friendly. Rooms and hotel itself very clean.
- Activities: Maritim restaurant for good choice of food at reasonable prices. Good location for sightseeing.

We went to a time share presentation at this hotel and were offered holiday vouchers as an incentive. They did not give us the vouchers at the time but only gave a letter saying they would send them on. They did not do this and refuse to answer emails. Don't trust them!

The location and weather was superb, the down side was the hotel.
Sun beds were crammed together to maximise the space, and the hotel corridors were like a rabbit warren due the many added extensions.
We were fine with location being fairly young; however elderly guests did have problems.
The hotel is situated in Meillha village a short bus ride from the bay, which is a fabulous location for children, it offers one of the few sandy beaches in Malta, where the water is warm an you can walk a good 30 - 40 metres into the water and still only be at waist height.
Bus from the village to the bay costs 26 cents, but is double that on the 'express' bus which is not any faster. This is also the same bus fare to Valletta which must b 45 minutes to 1 hour away by bus.

We enjoyed a fabulous week at this hotel/apartment. We found it very clean, comfortable and staff very friendly.
A word of warning although the hotel boasts 2 outdoor pools and 1 indoor pool, both the outside pools were small with a tiny circular kids paddling pool. The main outdoor pool was 3 m (9ft) deep although it had a shallow end it went deep very quickly due to the small size and would not really be suitable for children who want more than a paddling pool but are not confident swimmers.
Slight grumble that the pool tables in the games room didn't work.
We would definitely recommend the restaurant at Hotel Maritim which is just over the bridge at the bottom of the steps - reasonably priced tasty food, large portions, good service, and pleasant surroundings. Definitely would recommend the pizzas.
Would recommend Billy's taxi's - for airport transfers - cheaper than the hotel can arrange. Their office is at the bottom of the hill which is the main road which leads to shops, restaurants, and bars.
Would not recommend the Hilltop restaurant - which is found at the top of the hill!!
Poor service, poor food - not a patch on the Maritim.
The hotel was a good 20 minute walk to the end of the beach with sun loungers, umbrella's (sun beds 1.5 ml, umbrellas 0.75 ml). Would recommend a day at the beach just for the beautiful clear warm sea. Would recommend taking their bus back unless you got 4 x 4 shoes!! - 0.23 ml bus fare.
Would recommend a bus ride to Valetta - all day bus ticket for 1.5 ml - walled city with lots of character. Lots of shops including British favourites such as Next and M & S.
If you go to Gozo it may be worth pre-booking a taxi to get back to your hotel as the bus stops at 8.00 and as we got the 11 o clock ferry back we had to walk for about 20 minutes to a hotel who kindly phoned a taxi for us.
Would recommend resort if you like a quieter holiday - not a clubbing resort - very sedate and definitely not a "Brits abroad" resort. It still had a Maltese feel to it, very relaxed and laid back.
Our party consisted of 4 adults, 4 teenagers and 1 8 year old and we would all definitely return.
Obviously the glorious weather helped!
We wished we would have hired a car and stayed for 2 weeks instead of one.
We booked flights and hotel independently we booked hotel via Ryanair hotel link and room was half price of the advertised rate in the hotel.

The Pergola Club provided very good facilities. There were 2 outdoor pools, both of which were very clean and an indoor pool which, as it was June, we never used but it too was very clean. The room facilities were good with a well equipped kitchen. There were 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 children in a one bed roomed apartment (please note that the apartments in this hotel are charged on an apartment basis and not on the number of occupants - this made it good value for money for a family). Our only complaint about the apartment was that the air conditioning in the bedroom did not work very well.
Mellieha itself was a very pleasant town the a range of food shops for those wishing to cater for themselves as well as a number of very good restaurants with varied menus at reasonable prices. We did note however that that for those vegetarians who do not eat fish the choice might be a bit limited.
The beach at Mellieha is one of the few sandy beaches in Malta and therefore tends to be fairly busy with locals and tourists alike. There is plenty of loungers and sun shades available for a fee and there is also a large inflatable water play area in the bay. There is a charge for using this facility and life jackets of all sizes are available. Although there is very little tidal change and no current there can be a reasonably strong off shore breeze which makes the use of lilos and other inflatables a little dangerous although these are sold on the beach with no warning about the problem. Either make sure you have a rope attached to the inflatable or don't use them!
We tried to visit some of the other parts of the island, from the capital Valetta to some of the many historical sites. We hired a car which was interesting as none of the local drivers seem to have any idea about courtesy on the roads However the local bus service seemed to be very good and quite cheap. There are not may activities aimed at children so if your children are not content to play on the beach or by the pool and need constant entertainment Malta may not be the place for you. Ours enjoyed the historic sites and a boat trip to the lagoon at Comino. We also visited a Dolphin park which was good if a little expensive. You can swim with the dolphins but need to book in advance.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday and didn't manage to do all the things that we had on our list so we're going back this year again. We couldn't get booked at the Pergola so we're going to its sister hotel the Solana which was just opened last year. We'll report on that after we've been in June.

We are a family of 5 that visited Malta in April 2011 for a week in the Club Pergola. I take 3 foreign holidays a year and this, without question, is the biggest let down I have experienced.
All week we were all awoken from 6am in the morning from the noise above us. Our 2 bed apart seemed to be under a main corridor and the luggage room - Staff failed to do anything about it each time we raised the concern. Their suggestion was to move us to a much smaller apartment and charge us extra for it!
The staff in the hotel were rude, unfriendly and did not have any knowledge of local sights/venues/attractions/markets etc.. On one occasion my sister was shouted at by the barman when she requested a coffee. We had bought food at the same poolside bar 30 mins earlier but had not realised (as it was our 1st day) that the bar closes early by the pool.
On 4 occasions during my stay we waited for between 5 and 15 mins while staff either chatted to their colleagues, ate food or made personal calls.
The "gym" is very unsafe and unhygienic. Some broken, most missing grips and most are rusty.
Cleaners cleaned around items in room and not once hoovered the main rug. From the 4th morning onwards we sought out our towels and did our own cleaning.
We didnt get to use the Spa facilities as when we enquired, we were told they were closed but we could use the sister hotel. If you do stay here, get used to hearing "you need to go to our Sister Hotel!" Despite enquiring about using the Spa in the sister hotel, it was still booked out.
The Wifi is not free - it is €4 per hour but, BUT, "you need to go to our sister hotel" to use the free service.
Mellieha, as a village, is very pretty and picturesque and is a lovely place to stay if you need to unwind, however I can't recommend the Club Pergola at all! Very poorly run and operated. Other guests we spoke to experienced similar experiences to us in relation to staff attitude so I am happy to know that we were not a once off case.
Hope this helps
