I read the reviews before booking a week at the Ilhan for a late holiday. Have to say they capture the essence of the place perfectly. If you want 4 or 5 star, don't bother going to the Ilhan, but if you just want to chill out and enjoy the pleasures of a REAL Turkish holiday, then this place can't be bettered. It's also perfectly located on a quiet (mostly, except for when they bring coach loads of tourists down it, all exclaiming how lovely and quiet it is!) lane just a few yards from the amphitheatre.
It is very simple but clean and very traditional. We had a balcony overlooking the garden and the fragrance of the jasmine and datura were enough to knock your socks off. We spent hours watching the birds near our window and I'm dying to find out what they were - possibly bulbul.
The breakfast is typically Turkish - cheeses, tomato, olives and cucumber plus a basket of bread with honey and jam. Tip - the soft white cheese is delicious topped with the local honey. We didn't bother with the coffee, which was just Nescafe, but the urn of real chai was lovely. The beds were comfortable and they even had a plug for the bathroom basin - a first. We always carry our own because it's Turkish tradition to wash under running water, and they don't use them themselves. There was also a proper shower tray and shower curtain, which saves a lot of mess in the bathroom, but they're not always provided.
The 2 dogs were lovely and we found you just had to be firm with them if you didn't want them to pester you.
You also have to be firm with the salesmen - just carry on walking because as soon as you stop they have you! We also looked at shop windows in short bursts - when the proprietors started to move so did we.
This was our first visit to Side for about 15 years, and it hasn't changed a lot in the old town. Can't wait to go back again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks at this family run hotel. It was our first time in Turkey and we will definitely go back. Well done to Ali who always seemed to be there no matter what time of day/night it was.
Hugo (the dog) was lovely and very placid with customers. We would recommend this hotel to family and friends as it is small, friendly and well looked after.
The ruins in Side are absolutely amazing and well worth a visit.

I just arrived back from Side last Monday morning and I'm already looking into booking for next year, back to the Ilhan. As everyone has already said, yes its very basic but it's clean and all the staff are friendly and make you feel very welcome.
Everyone's mentioned Hugo but while we were there a new dog joined from the streets her name is Gabby and she's also a very friendly dog, they both go crazy when the locals go past on their bikes and Gabby even manages to fit through the fence, she's a bit of a character as you will see if your visiting this hotel .
But I'm gonna give it a 10 out of 10 anyway, and just one last thing if you happen to be staying there and looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful to eat at night I highly recommend Erol's its a 2 minute walk from the Ilhan and I guarantee you will enjoy your meals there.

What a fantastic time we had at the Ilhan hotel. Just arrived back 23 - May.
The Ilhan is a small well run family hotel and everyone there makes you feel very welcome.
The rooms are basic but very clean and the hotel is located right in the heart of the ancient ruins of side, and you are surrounded by history.
Hugo the dog is mega. He’s big but very soft, you will just want love him all the time.
If you’re looking for a nice quiet relaxing holiday with easy access to everything i.e., beach 2 minute walk, shops cafes restaurants bars 2 minute walk. Brilliant.
I would like thank jasmine, Ali, Memmeht and all the staff for giving the best stress free time of my life. We will be returning as soon as possible.

After booking this just 2 days before we travelled we really didn't know what to expect! I had never been to Turkey before and never done a package holiday. When we arrived at the hotel, I was a bit taken back. The room was clean but basic.
We had such a great time, the local area is very nice and the people are very friendly. We were made to feel very welcome and part of the family at the hotel, the owners were very nice and we're definitely coming back next year. Having read through the other comments I'm a bit confused as to what people were expecting.. 5 star luxury maybe??? Some people just like to complain though and there really is nothing to complain about.. The other guests in the hotel were great too and we all gelled well together, making the holiday great fun... the Turkish night was good too.. Excellent food and even a belly dancer!!
Hugo the dog is definitely not any trouble... he certainly doesn't bite but he does shout at the local youths riding past on there mopeds... go get em Hugo!! He’s cute and a big softy.. And very obedient!
If you get the chance to visit.. Please do.. It’s a great hotel in a great town and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to go to Turkey for the first time.

I spent a week at the hotel Ilhan with 5 of my friends. We were looking for a fun holiday with things to do, some nightlife but also to relax. We got everything!
The staff were friendly and helpful and great fun. Always made us feel welcome and liked to join in our games of cards.
The beach is lovely, with free sun beds and service from Ali the beach worker. Another Ali at the bar at the hotel was a top bloke and showed us around the best places and showed us some laughs.
The best thing about side is the cost of everything. Food and drink was so cheap. A good meal and drinks for about 10 pounds each! Especially once you start to know the restaurant staff as they offered us free drinks regularly. They never seem to forget a face!
The only negative point I have is that the clubs (especially Apollo in the ruins) are more than happy to give you as much drink as they can sell you but then do not like drunk English lads in a large group!
Overall fantastic holiday and would recommend the resort and the hotel to families, couples and groups of friends alike.

After reading other reviews posted prior to leaving for our holiday I must admit to feeling slightly worried that we'd made a big mistake. Nothing could have been further from the truth, we had a fabulous week at the Ilhan motel (returning home yesterday) it has a family feel and all the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. I can only imagine the people who were disappointed expected 5* treatment on the cheap! We had great weather met some wonderful people in a beautiful country and will most definitely be going back to the Ilhan the next holiday we take. Thanks to Ali the barman, Yasimen, all of the family and the adorable Hugo. See you soon.

We had a fantastic week at the Ilhan. The family made us feel very welcome, it was like staying with friends. The hotel is great and Hugo is a star. The staff are very friendly and helpful and Yasemin and her family were always very happy to see everyone and spent lots of time with us. We made lots of friends. The Turkish night on Thursdays is a must... you get a great bar-b-q and entertainment in the shape of a belly dancer. Excellent!! The hotel is ideally located in the old town and great for the beach. We recommend it to anyone who wants to visit Turkey!

This was our second visit to the Ilhan. Yasmine and her family always make you feel part of the family.
We went there on recommendation and were not disappointed. The rooms are clean and tidy and cleaned every day. If this is your first visit to turkey, Ilhan is a must. Don’t go all inclusive, try the local hospitality you will not regret it.
Hugo is a good dog and you feel safe because he’s there we will be back again in June 2007 can’t wait.

We have just returned from our holiday at the Ilhan Hotel, Side. After reading some of the reviews from previous guests we were a little apprehensive of what to expect from the Ilhan. However we were very pleasantly surprised. The Ilhan is a small family run hotel with excellent facilities for a holiday right in the heart of the old town.
The rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable and the cleaning lady really makes sure you have everything you need.
The staff are always helpful and friendly especially Ali, Mehmet, Yasemin and Ilhan himself. Hugo the dog is great and really added to our experience staying here.
This was a fantastic holiday and we have already booked to go back again in October.

We recently spent a week at the Ilhan Hotel in Side. Given that this hotel is described in Thomas Cook's Escape brochure as 'Simple Style' it entirely meets the needs of couples and singles looking for a hotel offering basic, comfortable accommodation.
The family who owners were very friendly and welcoming. Members of staff, i.e. Aly, Mehmet and the lady who cleans the rooms, were helpful and pleasant. Hugo the dog made us feel welcome too! All our requests were met and nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel is situated in a quiet lane two minutes walk from an uncommercialised beach and in the very heart of Side. We will definitely be going back.

We spent a fabulous week in the Ilhan , the room was average but clean, the staff were extremely friendly , the hotel was very quaint and really romantic in a funny sort of way, the dog Hugo should be kept away from the kitchen and dinning tables , he was quite off putting but didn’t spoil a most fantastic holiday ,I would go back as soon as possible , this is a third world country but the local people have got better manners and humour than most of their rude nit picking guests who want five star accommodation and service for less than two hundred pounds per week , some people are so up their own bums that they forget to see the good in most situations, carry on with the lovely lifestyle Ilhan , I will definitely come back one day very soon I hope. xx b griffiths/fidler, ps we stayed September 2004 and don’t really remember who the operator was.

I have just returned from a lovely holiday at the ilhan hotel after reading some of the comments about this hotel I was not at all sure what to expect on arriving there we were greeted with a smile although only basic the rooms were very clean .The owners of the ilhan were very friendly and always joined the guest at breakfast Hugo the dog was lovely and always wanted lots of fuss . Ali the bar man was lovely nothing was to much trouble do anything to help and that goes for the rest of the staff .Everything was close by but the hotel was very relaxing somewhere nice to have a quiet drink if you wanted. Kelly the Thomas Cook rep was very friendly and does what she could to help if you had any problems. I would definitely go back and looking to book a holiday for next year and staying at the Ilhan of course .
