This was our 1st time in turkey and definitely wont be our last.
The old town of side has everything you could wish for. The hotel was very clean and very friendly. It is worth going just to meet Ahmet and Hogo the dog. Fantastic. We found the Turkish people very friendly and never felt pressurised. The beaches are beautiful and the water really is crystal clear and turquoise. It was fab to be able to see so many turtles living so close to humans.
The roman ruins are a spectacular sight. There are plenty of boat trips that are unmissable. To us, there could be no better holiday.

The Ilhan hotel in Side was a well run family establishment, with friendly staff and generally a friendly easygoing place.
It was central to everything we needed had lovely gardens and the family were very nice. We had a lovely holiday, this was our 1st visit to turkey so it was nice to have a lovely place to stay like the Ilhan.
I will return to the Ilhan next year but will definitely not go with Thomas Cook, the rep was absolutely useless my 12 year old could have represented the company better than she did, apart from nearly missing our flight because of her ineptitude she generally showed no care to any of the people under her supervision this I feel lets the company and the Ilhan down. Don’t be put off by this - email the hotel and go on your own without Thomas Cook.

Ideally situated in the centre of side, Hotel Ilhan has a 5th century amphitheatre on one side and a leafy lane stretching to the bayon the other. 3 minutes to the beach (not by thunderbird 1 ) which has a small beach ( grab a place early) alongside a longer one both very clean with real sand ( no pebbles)! Ilhan is a friendly hotel with spacious rooms of a very good standard, very clean, very safe. Restaurants are good with the best being sound waves, a pirates of the Caribbean place decked out like a pirate ship, try the king fish, yum! Side has more culture per square foot than the entire USA with its almost neglected abundance of ancient architecture laying in all directions., check out the temple of Apollo!!!
Icing on the cake has to be the aerial display of the house martins doing a top gun show every evening over the rooftops.
Peaceful yet full of life, a must.

This was booked at the last minute & I wish we’d just taken our chances with the English weather! Neither myself nor my boyfriend had been to Turkey before but everywhere else was booked up, but the travel agent assured us it would be fine, as our 'resort' had a lovely beach, local entertainment, sights, etc, just like the usual holiday destination. Please see below for a summary!
The flight out was delayed by 8 hours.
We were on a B&B basis but the only breakfast included in this was cheese and ham - not very British, which was fine, except the brochure didn’t point this fact out.
The room was dirty, dark, next to the main road, with peeling paint and run-down furniture.
The towels were changed only if you took them to reception, put them on the floor, and took your own, new clean ones.
The room wasn’t cleaned at all.
The excursions consisted of shopping in Istanbul. If you didn’t want to shop, the rep wouldn’t talk to you.
The rep was rude and only brightened up at the thought of spending money on this trip. We saw her for 10 mins at the start of the holiday.
Entertainment consisted of football on the widescreen TV, 24/7. Oh, and a BBQ where the owner invited his mates and they took the p*** out of the people staying.
There was no pool, something that’s fairly important for a holiday, and something not pointed out by the travel agent.
The picture in the brochure shows the staff’s living quarters, not the hotel.
The locals were rude and constantly harassed us, it was especially bad for me being young and blonde being the constant centre of unwanted attention and embarrassing questions.
You couldn’t even get away from it on the beach-as soon as you walked down the path leading to the sand, a local would come over and TELL you where to sit, give you a parasol and sun bed (whether or not you wanted it) then wanted money for the pleasure.
There is more but I think this is enough! All in all, we reached day 3 and counted down to home time. Don’t bother!
