First time at Phoenix Park Inn, although about our 16th time in Goa. Although we were put in one of the older parts of the hotel, this had it's advantages in that it was very quiet. Yes, it was a bit shabby, but the bed was comfortable, the curtains fitted the windows and the bedding and towels were white (a novelty in Goa I can tell you). When we arrived we had to wait for the room to be cleaned, but had breakfast whilst we did so - waiters were very attentive and the food was good. The kettle in our room looked a bit dangerous with wires hanging out, but our room boy replaced it straight away. The balcony door wouldn't shut properly and standard lamp did not work, but the maintenance man came straight away and the matter resolved in minutes. We were advised that we had no shower curtain as it was being replaced, which is was within 15 minutes.
I know people have complained about the airport in Goa and long waits, but these days it's much quicker and more efficient than when we first went to Goa back in the early 90s. We landed, picked up our luggage and were out of the airport within 45 minutes and, on departure, through to the lounge within just over 1 hour.
Despite terrorist alerts over Christmas/New Year and the presence of the military, the threat of banning beach parties did not materialise and we had a fantastic time, with fireworks bringing in the New Year as usual. The one good thing about this threat was that sellers were banned from the beaches (although a few did manage it!), but lots more beggars than normal for some reason (easily ignored or moved on with a few words).
Would definitely go back to Phoenix Park, it's one of the most quietest hotels we've been to in the Calangute/Candolim area, with the staff being some of the most friendliest and helpful we've encountered over the years. Perhaps next time I'll hold out for one of the newer rooms, but going back into the one of the older blocks would not stop me going.

Just read the remarks about Phoenix Park. I was also there in March and have been mostly in October and February since the hotel opened, its one of the better ones. The staff are the nicest and most friendly. I came across the hotel manager Mario who cannot do enough to ensure your stay is one to remember.
I find it sad the good lady had a bad time but we and our friends who between us have stayed at this hotel over 20 times and between us we have never once had a complaint. Sorry I lie, one complaint, its too long between next visits, Phoenix Park is still and will always be a very good value hotel. Great staff and yes it's a basic hotel but HELLO its India not a 5 star Hilton break

What can I say you either love Goa or hate it. I was not impressed.
Spent 2 weeks there in March and spent most of the second week in bed with sickness and diahorrea. The hotel is supposed to be really good. We, that’s my hubby and myself found it very basic. The breakfast was poor, not great hygiene either, the way the breakfast was laid out and served.
Had to change room as well because of the noise, the place was full of chavs. I am a vegetarian and I still was ill with the food, had to get doctor to the hotel as I thought I was going to die as I felt so bad. My poor husband was playing nurse most of the second week.
On the good side if any, the people are really nice and hotel staff were very helpful and friendly (most of them).
When you are on the beach which is ok not great, the shack boys really do look after you with great service all day for a few pounds. The massage girls and the ones that do your nails are great, they have such a hard life and always smile, ask for Nita for some great manicures.
One big problem on the beach is the beggars (most are alcoholics) and the sellers they do not take no for an answer, they drive you mad you can’t relax for more than 1 minute, but they are trying to sell you stuff and if you are sleeping they will wake you.
The bars and restaurants at night in Candolim are ok, some better than others but lots of the chavs go there now, so I think it will soon be taken over by them as it is cheap and lots of cheap beer.
We would never go back if you like the Far East, Malaysia etc you will not like it here it is too many years behind, the litter is also really bad.
The Thompson rep is a total waste of time as well no help only wants to sell you daft expensive trips.
One final word the bloody airport has to be the worst in the world, nearly 2 hours to collect bags and 3hrs to check in to get out of the country and it is total chaos and no air conditioning. Be warned.

This is a lovely hotel. It was our second visit. The staff are very friendly and will do anything for you.
Heard complaints that some of the rooms were basic. "What do you expect it’s India" It was all very clean and tidy the rooms were cleaned everyday and the cleaners were very friendly and very proud of the jobs they do and the hotel.
The food was nice. There was a lot of choice for breakfast and it was always very fresh and very clean. They have themed nights in the hotel 4 times a week with live entertainment and all you can eat and drink (for about £5).
Having been to Goa before and seen other hotels in the resort, I would say this is the best hotel in the area to stay.
Candolim beach is beautiful there are a lot of sellers, but if you say "no thanks" they will leave you alone.
A lovely resort it’s a bit of a culture shock at first you have to go with an open mind! But the people are lovely and you always feel safe. Also it’s very cheap you can’t spend your money.
Anyone thinking of going to Goa and staying at the Phoenix I would say "go for it"
We will definitely be going back.

Phoenix park inn situated quite close to the main drag of Candolim is quite nice but baring in mind it was only built in 2003 it is a little bit shabby in the rooms. The tiles were cracked and plug sockets hanging off the walls but this, however, seems to be the case throughout Goa. "manyana" some say (in Spanish means tomorrow!)
However the pool and breakfast area were always clean and tidy and staff extremely helpful. The lad who looks after the pool (I have forgotten his name!) was extremely attentive and good at his job.
Candolim, to myself, was an amazing area full of cheapy tourist restaurants and shops but for any first time India travelers may come as bit of a shock because it isn’t exactly Benidorm!
The taxi drivers waiting outside the hotel were very good (make sure you agree a price first and the taxi driver knows exactly where you want to go!) especially 'Sanjay' (drives a car rather than mini van)
We would most definitely recommend the waterfalls trip and a trip into Panjim (very cheap!)
For anyone who wants to see some real India get a train from old Goa to Margo (industrial capitol) which takes about 30 minutes and costs about a pound for a family of four one way! (Plan this well as trains aren’t as often as British rail) it is a very interesting experience!!!
Candolim beach is lovely but be careful of the under currents, dogs and beach sellers (although police do patrol the beach to stop them) beach shacks often give out free sun beds in return for purchase of drinks which are next to nothing. The runners who work for these shacks are often very chatty and interested to get to know you! (We recommend the white horse shack in particular with the runner 'ankush'!) When beach sellers approach you just be persistent in saying no thank you politely and they will soon get the message.
Candolim is a good body boarding/body surfing area as the waves are quite clean and of a good height but beware of the shallow breaks and undercurrent.
Overall a very interesting experience. My daughter loved it as it can be a complete culture shock and the people are so friendly!! We will back to Goa and my daughter back to anyway she can in India!
