An inexpensive flight to any destination can lose its gloss if your accommodation is not up to standard. The Amaryllis Aparthotel was recommended to me by a friend who had been lucky enough to find it a few years ago, and has returned there time and again. I decided to give it a try, 'phoned and booked our week in the sun.
I had expected a small family run outfit. Like many on Crete, but this was a well laid out hotel/apartment complex with all the amenities and convenience of a chain hotel. Gardens, a large pool, plenty of sun beds, two bars on site, and the cleanest apartment I have stayed in throughout Greece!
It is still a Family Run Business. Stratos and Maria work very hard along with their staff, to maintain the high standard of cleanliness and service that
We found it easy to exchange currency in the hotel, at a rate as good as the local bank. The food and snacks available were fresh and tasty, although we tended to try local restaurants for evening meals.
Kalamaki is a quiet resort with tavernas and restaurants aplenty, but none of the 18 - 30 crowd that make Laganas... about 3 or 4 km along the beach... such a noisy one. There is one small complaint for me.... The local scooter and (at least one lunatic) motorcycle riders tend to be a tad careless of pedestrians... but that's "teenagers" anywhere in the world I guess.
We hired a car for the week, to see the island. The car was delivered to the airport, and collected from the airport as we left. Less than 90 Euros for the week. I shopped around and found a good reliable and inexpensive family run car hire in Tsilivi called EUROALPHA. Aggelos and Maria Kordelos were just BRILLIANT.
We recommend Kalamaki to anyone who wants a good but not too noisy holiday. Swim with the turtles!

I went to Greece with my good friend and parents. I absolutely loved it over there! The apartments were great me and my friend shared our own apartment and as messy as we could make it the maid would always come in and make a cracking job of it!
The staff were all friendly and very nice, there was a few occasions when we bumped into the gardener in the bars and he would always buy us a rose! We made some great friends over there who told us how they went there every year and will continue to as they love it so much! The bars and restaurants are fabulous and I am very happy as me and my boyfriend have just decided to go back there this year!
However the only problem I have got is that I can’t find any travel agencies to take us there, maybe you could help could you tell me which travel agents will help us book another fab hol!

First Choice reps very efficient and helpful. Accommodation very high standard - highest we’ve experienced in Greece so far. Resort quiet, but plenty of restaurants, bars and shops. Not far to drive to Zante town, and car hire was reasonable.
Food was good (we used a few different local restaurants, but the best of them was definitely Michaelo's!), and very good value for money. Transfer time was only 15 mins, so very close to the airport, but it only opens at 5.30 am, and closes at 11.30 pm, so it never disturbed us. Staff at the hotel were very efficient, friendly and helpful - the cleaners even did our washing up on one occasion when we had left it to go on a day trip!
We used the Travel Association of Zante (TEZ) for our 2 excursions - one to ancient Olympia and the other a boat trip round the island - both were very well-run, and most enjoyable. The island is small enough to explore easily by car in one day, and car hire (locally) is very reasonable. The local beach was lovely; long, sandy, and very clean.

We had a great time in Kalamaki, The Amarylis apartments were excellent, the rooms were very clean, the staff very friendly and helpful, it is in a great location close to restaurants, shops, bars and a short walk to the beach, also you can take a relaxing walk on the beach from Kalamaki to Laganas or vice versa.
The pool was clean with free sun loungers, a pool bar which served all drinks and various foods open all day. There is a small children’s play area, ping pong, pool, and a night bar which holds bingo, karaoke, and other fun games. We had an excellent holiday and the weather was lovely. We would definitely return to the Amarylis Apartments.

2 adults + 1 child (10yr) we had a great time. Everything was spot on. We went allocation on arrival, got a very good deal, 800euro for 3 for week. Apartments were clean, near beach and restaurants, good snack bar at pool, lots of sun loungers, little supermarket. Island is perfect for 1 week- lovely beaches, go carting, Water Park, bowling, boat trips and sightseeing. We hired a car not through rep, much cheaper in any place up the main road. The receptionist in the Appt. was great, an English woman married out there for 15 yrs. She had brilliant tips on places to see and things not to miss.
Would recommend this island to everyone. Kalamaki is nice and quiet but Laganas seemed very lively. We had no problem with noise either from the airport or other people. If you hire car do your trip to smugglers bay from cliffs nearby, it’s much quicker and you can see blue caves as well. Bring towel and togs as you get off the boat at the bay. The turtles were amazing on Kalamaki Beach they swam in to paddling depth. Airport is tiny, if there is a downside this is it, but flight left on time.

My husband and our 3 kids aged between 9-13 stayed here in May 2006, we were hoping for good accommodation as we had already booked for 2007!
We were not disappointed, the Amaryllis is a fantastic place to stay, and it’s clean and well maintained.
The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was cleaned on a daily basis; the only downside is that if you need air con it is quite expensive.
The best places to eat in Kalamaki are Tesoras for evening meal and Cronulla Bar for breakfast.
I strongly recommend the trip around the island on the boat; we booked at the operator that is just around the corner from the Amaryllis.
I would suggest taking your own food and drinks though, as once on the boat you find the cost is a bit pricey.
Can't wait to come back again this year (43 days to go!!)
