Papagayo Arena Hotel Reviews

Submitted By: Miss J KingstonFood is fab with lots of variety! Drinks available day and night. Swimming pools and entertainment great.
Hotel is clean, staff friendly, great views and no noise from local bars.
Recommend a cheap hire car at the airport for the week and visit the beaches up the coast (although you can walk to them).

Submitted By: jczThe Hotel's great, food great, loads of choice all fresh. Drinks were great. Lovely views & rooms.
Hotel very very clean. With such a wide range of ages it’s hard to get it right, but we had a great time. My mother in law was in a wheelchair that was no problem at all.
My 3 year old daughter loved the mini Disco. Just wished it was on a little later, a bit of a rush at dinner and it could have been a little longer .
We would all go back this year. We are all off to Turkey. We just hope it’s as good there....Wish us luck!

Submitted By: Miss K RossThe food was great with a lot of different choices; however, finding a table was sometimes a bit of a pain. The wine, beer, and soft drinks were readily available.
The pools were nice and it was easy to get a sunbed but umbrellas were not available at all beds, this maybe different during busier months such as July and August.
We had a second floor room in Block A which was quite far from reception but was well signposted and quiet, the balcony was massive and we had lovely view of the sea and Fuerteventura.
The rooms are air-conditioned with a mini-bar which was not stocked. We just had chocolate and bottles of water in it. The beds were extremely uncomfortable but I have yet to find a hotel that provides comfortable beds.
We took a trip into Puerto del Carman by taxi which was expensive at 35 Euros each way but we were meeting friends so didn't mind the cost. It would probably have been cheaper to hire a car or find out about bus times but we were there to relax.
I did find it funny when we went out for a walk and came across of "shopping centre" not too far away - with no shops!!!
Overall I enjoyed my holiday but if you are looking to go out and do something different every night this will not be the place for you as the resort is far away from other places.

Submitted By: Mrs J StratfordThe food was great - a different hot/cold buffet everyday with a 'live grill', as they call it (!), and chefs continuously cooking fresh fish, poultry and meat at every meal. The selection of food was amazing! Drinks available were all 'branded' and generous measures. At meal times all drinks alcoholic and non-alcoholic were on a 'help yourself' basis. Fortunately the variety of food available is so good, we managed not to take advantage of this too much!
The hotel is quite a walk from Playa Blanca but it just takes a short taxi ride or the hotel shuttle bus a few minutes so it's not a problem. We hired a car for four days at very, very reasonable rates from the car hire firm at the hotel so that we could see more of the island - a stunning volcanic island which is at its most dramatic at sunset!
Our holidays are usually self-catering in villa accommodation so I was rather nervous at going on a package tour. However, in this instance, I would truly recommend this hotel and resort - we will definitely be going again!

Submitted By: Mr C HutchingsVery clean room/hotel and pools, staff excellent and room cleaning excellent, must agree with others that the beds are Very Hard and uncomfortable. Very good selection of food and wonderful measure of drinks and surprisingly very little queuing.
We had a hot and sunny week and didn't bother to leave the hotel everything we wanted was there for us day and night. We are all trying to get a deal to go back as soon as we can
Go on take yourselves there you won't regret a minute.

Submitted By: Mr P ArrowsmithI can’t recommend it enough. Went with two boys 9 and 7 they loved it. I would definitely go again.
I am a bit of a snob and this place suited me. If you’ve booked it relax you'll have a great time.

There were Germans who, like us, were there to enjoy their holiday, there were also other nationalities. The hotel is so beautiful and spacious there was room for everyone. The food was varied and excellent. We had a mini bar filled alternate days with soft drinks, - this was free. The staff were friendly, spoke very good English and were very polite. The beach wasn’t up to much, but the pools were great. The pool water was cool, but refreshing after being in the lovely sunshine.
All the facilities including mini golf, Jacuzzi, gym etc. were free and never crowded. All in all I would recommend this holiday especially for families.

I would also advise anyone to hire a car and have a trip to the volcano, the water park and generally get a feel for this warm and friendly resort.

Submitted By: Miss E SimpsonThe rooms were very clean and modern with plenty of storage space, the balcony was a good size. We were sea view facing so the view was fantastic.
The food was excellent. The choice was amazing. We went on a HB basic but decided to go up-grade to inclusive and I am very glad we did. Staff were very helpful and friendly and the drinks measurements were great ( had a few many headaches the next morning )
The pool area was good but when we went there were alot of German’s who were very loud and always got up at the crack of dawn to put the towels on the sunbeds!!!
The animation team were good and tried there best to get everyone involved with the day activities. The only thing that let this hotel down was the night entertainment was not the best
The disco was pretty poor. The location was a bit of a problem as there was nowhere else to go within walking distance so you would have to get a taxi on the night to Playa Blanca town - there is a hotel shuttle bus in the day which is good.
On the whole we really enjoyed this hotel and would return - we recommended it to my Partner’s parents and they have booked to go in Dec 04

Our party of 4 adults and 5 children aged 3, 2 and 3 under 1 yr had no difficulty in finding a table or high chairs at any time, although smoking seems to be allowed anywhere in the restaurants and quite often you would be eating your meal with someone puffing away next to you, not very nice.

Some of the features described as being available in the brochure weren’t and had to be bought at extra cost, (mini bar in room and for some reason water...), you were allowed to have water in cups, but if you were caught filling bottles (even for the babies milk) the staff became quite agitated.

The beds were probably the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in, and the chairs were very, very uncomfortable after a few minutes. Room cleaning was hit or miss, one couple had fabulous service from their maid, the other couple had to complain on several occasions. The nightly entertainment was excellent, and the adult only bar “the green room” was also great (with the hotels most comfy chairs!!).

The biggest disappointment for us though was the children’s club wasn’t up to much and the "playground" consisted of a single climbing frame. Parts of the hotel do look a bit tired. All that said most of the staff, and this seems to be a good first attempt by Sandos resorts.

Nowhere near enough parasols for sun beds. Staff still cleaning dining room at mealtimes (someone fell over and hurt themselves on wet floor), cava available at breakfast (!!), but not lunch or dinner. White rose and red wine provided pretty ropy. No tables available if you ate late, and hotel was nowhere near full capacity. Also staff still cleaning atrium at 11.00am.

We went the last two weeks in June, and the first week was fairly quiet. However, the next week saw a big influx of mainly Spanish families, who were LOUD! Bedroom doors slammed whatever the time, kids shouting, babies wailing; combined with the drilling near the pool that was going on, you could not get any peace anywhere. The poolside area was dangerous when wet too.

Having said all that, we found the staff overall charming. If you smiled and were pleasant to them, they responded accordingly. The food was of generally high quality and good variety. I cannot say I would visit again though unless they pull their socks up. The general consensus amongst the guests was that they had spent all their money, and were trying to get some back before making any more improvements.

" A lovely place. We went May Last year... "
Submitted By: Mr P ArrowsmithFound the place clean and well maintained. There was a bit of building work going on in front of the hotel but never noticed this. Food - very good apart from the Thai which wasn’t Thai but Chinese chippy stuff. The main restaurant was very good - didn’t eat in the French one. Pizzas and pasta were good in the Italian one though. Rooms always clean and made up daily. You get towels for the pool from the gym- so space in your bag for more holiday clothes! Pools always clean and always a sunbed but not always a parasol but hey you are English you are supposed to go red!
We used the big acclimatised pool the most so no ooh when you get in the water. Night time seemed to be a bit quiet ...shows till 12midnight then disco in the main atrium thing. There is a green bar that’s just for adults but we didn’t go in as the kids wouldn’t let us. The drink was ok, local stuff which seemed to have no alcohol in it.. I drank Honey rum all day and felt fine. You can buy nicer stuff for a bit extra.. Veuve Cliqout shampoo cost an extra 15 euros at the bar yay!
The beach at the front of the hotel is pants so walk ten minutes over the headland and you in Papagayo beaches very pretty and empty and loads of fish - bring mask and snorkel. Anyway if you have small kids and want a rest and to get fat go here its great. There is a submarine trip, which is so cool and costs about 30 quid for adults and 20 for kids.. but as you are all inclusive you can spend your money on that well worth it
Can’t wait til Sunday! Pete ; )

Submitted By: P WilsonSome of the own branded drinks were undrinkable i.e. Gin and Tonic and branded drinks were available at an extra cost. The food was quite good but the French Resturant was quite expensive as it was not part of the all inclusive package. Avoid the Chinese Resturant as this was awful and we visited it only once.
The Staff were excellent and the maids left sculptured towels on the bed every day. The rooms were very clean indeed and it does make the holiday more enjoyable when the maid service is so thorough.
The thing that spoils it around the pool areas is the constant music from the entertainment squad ! When will these hotels realise that some of us want peace and quite to relax and read, not pistol shooting table tennis etc. You thought that you had found a quite spot then bang of goes the music for 30 -40 minutes.
The pool side snack bar is only open from 11:00 to 18:00 not all day as in the previous report although the crepes at 16:00 were very good.
One thing though we never did find was a comfortable chair in any of the bars and there are quite a few bars in the hotel. The terrace bar was ideal at night but spoilt by closing at 22:00 forcing you to proceed indoors to the racket of the disco playing in the open rotunda where all of the bars and restaurants are accessed.
All in all not a bad Hotel but it could do better on the entertainment front as you are quite a way from the town and although we had a car for the week driving under the influence is not recommended.

On Arrival you could just tell that it was going to be pure luxury, staff were friendly and helpful (and not just to get a tip).

The food was amazing, buffet was different each day and you had the choice of Italian and Chinese. With us both having great appetites there was so much to choose from, and not a dicky tummy in sight. You helped yourself to wine and beer at mealtimes and were in no rush to leave.

The rooms were lovely and a well stocked mini-bar that was re-stocked every two days.

Our only complaint was the beach ( if you could call it one) although the pools were fantastic and clean.

Could not fault this holiday we will be going again very soon!!!

P.S would not recommend if you don’t like the Germans!!

The Hotel really well designed with most rooms having a sea view directly onto a beach with views over to Fuerteventura. The hotel was very clean and with several places to sit and have a drink of an evening both inside and outside.
Plenty of lifts to the rooms and restaurants. It was nice to not have to get up at 6am to reserve a sun lounger you could go to breakfast, back to the room and arrive at the pool at 10am and still get 4 loungers by the pools.
The room was clean, tidy, of a good standard and plenty big enough for our family of four, it was also quite of a night time. The twin beds were a little hard, but we still managed to sleep ok. The sofa bed for the children was comfortable, the mattress on that was better than on our twin beds. We would recommend requesting a room in blocks B to D or you run the risk of overlooking to pool and onto bare ground rather than onto the sea.
The food was great with plenty of choice for all the family with the option of a Buffet, Pizza, Chinese, and French restaurant (although the French is subject to an extra charge). Food and drink was available 24 hours a day with good local alcoholic drinks and branded soft drinks both hot and cold. Cocktails were available in certain bars, ice creams were available from 11am till 7pm, and pancakes were available from 4pm to 6pm pool side.
We did not try the entertainment preferring to stay later at the pool not eating tea till 9pm the relaxing with drinks in the room or on several of the sofas around the hotel.
The only down side was the temperature of the pools they were not heated and felt cold.
They could have done with heating up a bit. Although they were good to cool off in a bit warmer would have been nice. The room was also not ready when we arrived at 2pm being told it would take 30 mins it actually took 70 mins.
I would recommend this hotel to families and couples, not honeymooners or those looking for a lively nightlife, as it is a family orientated, quiet hotel.
