we've been twice!

Jul 2010, pippa

we first visited pepi in september 2007 as a last minute deal and liked it so much we went back in september 2009. We love the fact that it's right in the middle of the old town with easy access to the tavernas (particularly the Lemon Tree right round the corner!)
We spent a lot of time on the beach, about a 10- 15 minute walk away, and ate a lot of large donuts! And
I must recommend the gin & tonics served by Christos in the bar near Raymondi fountain.
Our only gripe is the very basic quality of the rooms, particularly the ones on the right as you go thru the gate. They are very dark and pokey and you can't get into the wardrobe or open the window in the bedroom area without moving the furniture, however i have to admit they were kept very clean by the 2 ladies who did the cleaning (who were incidentally the only members of staff we saw)
we went with Thomson both times but i gather thomas cook has taken over, i hope their reps give a better service than thomsons whose whole focus seems to be on flogging 'trips'
we would definitley recommend Pepi as long as you're prepared for a quite basic but clean level of accommodation

My partner and I stayed at the Pythos Apartments in September 2009 and have both agreed that it was one of the best holidays we've ever had.
The apartment was spacious and clean and in the new block close to the pool and bar. The owners and staff were all fantastic, friendly and helpful and often carried our breakfast or coffees over to our table outside our room. We felt very spoiled and well looked after at all times throughout our stay.
The bar food was basic but of good quality and we would definitely recommend the club sandwich. The continental breakfast also lovely.
The apartments are quite isolated but we hired a jeep for the whole fortnight and travelled all over the island. Kefalonia has so much to offer, but without a car our holiday would have been extremely limited.
The closest beach is about 10 minutes down the road and the waves were great fun. This resort is close to the airport and there was some noise from air traffic but this did not detract in any way the enjoyment of the holiday.
Argostoli is great and we had some lovely meals there.
Overall, we would recommend Pythos apartments and Kefalonia. Off to Rhodes this year but Pythos and Kefalonia will be hard act to follow.

Chill out!

My wife & I spent a 2 week holiday at Pythos mid August. This was our first visit to Kefalonia (we usually go to Lesbos but fancied a change) and we had a really relaxing, chilled out break.
The appartments (we were in the new part) were clean and had a lovely view of the mountains. The facilities for cooking were typical Greek Island appartment basics. Ok if there are only 2 of you and you only need to brew up or fry up, but no good for a family who want to avoid eating out most of the time. This isn't a criticism, as most "self catering" appartments in Greece are the same, but anyone who has never visited the Greek Islands, and are planning to take the family there, needs to be aware to avoid unnecessary disappointment.
The pool and bar were kept clean at all times and I used to see the caretaker out there hosing the area down at 07:30 am every morning. The cleaning staff were excellent and very inconspicuous; appartments cleaned & bins emptied every day and clean sheets & towels every four days. A small story here; my wife left her white microfibre wrap towel on the bed on the day the towels and sheets were changed. Doh! Nedless to say, it went in with the rest of the laundry. She mentioned it to the staff and, to our surprise, we got it back the next day, nice and clean from the laundry. I think the staff understand more English than we give then credit for!
The appartments are very isolated but that was one of the attractions as far as we were concerned. If you need to use a cash point it's worth knowing that the nearest ones are in Argostoli, a 30 euro round trip! there are no street lights on the road up from the beach & tavernas so a torch is a must. A car or scooter are essential for at least some of your holiday, as public transport is virtually non-existent and Taxis are a tad expensive. Svoronata covers a large area and there is no "Town Centre" as such, so transport is needed unless you want to use the nearest tavernas all the time. Bearing in mind that the Airport is within walking distance, we were not disturbed very often by aircaft. There don't seem to be many flights in & out of it most of the time.
The island is very pretty and small enough for us to do the touristy bits, caves churches, castles, Assos etc. in the seven days we had a hire car. The first and last few days of our holiday were spent relaxing, either around the pool & bar or on the beach. The pool was never crowded during the time we were there, often we were the only people in it. The beach at Ammes is very busy after about 10:30 am, so if you want sunbeds and an umbrella (6 euros a day) don't leave it until lunchtime to go!
To summarise, we had a really relaxing holiday in nice clean accomodation and would happily recommend Kefalonia and Pythos Appartments to anyone looking for a similar break. Avoid Svoronata if you want a busy nightlife though!

Not to be recommended...

The actual apartments at Pythos are very good, clean, spacious and a nice swimming pool.
There are two main problems with Pythos.
One: they are very isolated. There are 3 or 4 tavernas about a 20 minute walk away which are ok, but nothing special (the road is unlit, so return journeys are in total darkness), and the beach is about 15 min walk away (same road as tavernas).
The beach is ok, nice and sandy, but it is at the end of the airport runway.
Two: the owners. They do not speak English, and therefore are not that interested in their guests. They spend all evening watching TV in a little corner of the restaurant area. We saw one couple arrive at about 10:30pm, obviously in total darkness and no idea where to go, the owners all sat around by the bar watching TV completely ignoring this couple. The Bulgarian handyman eventually showed them to their room.
The bar is not all that expensive (Euro 2.5 for a beer), however the food menu is quite simply pathetic. Not a single Greek dish on it, and the food is expensive. A real missed opportunity by the owners, some good Greek food at fair prices would rake the cash in, especially given the proximity to the tavernas.
The handyman is excellent, good English and very helpful. He appears to never stop working: cleaning the pool, serving in the bar, making the food, showing guests to their rooms.
Kefalonia is an amazing island, and cannot be recommended highly enough. Myself and my fiance are getting married there next year, but we will certainly not be suggesting Pythos Apartments (or Svoronata resort) to any of our wedding guests.
To find the real jewels in this island's crown, head to Agia Efimia, Assos, or if you want more touristy things, go to Sami - Antisammos beach is one of the best I've seen.
Car hire is a must too, wherever you stay there are other places that must be seen, but only really accessable in your own time with a car.

  • Advice: Avoid it

Really enjoyed our stay at the Pythos apartments. The apartment was lovely and spacious, (it was in the newly built annex - had heard complaints about the older building)didnt have air con but we had a fan and it was the first time I've ever had a TV in the apartment on a holiday to Greece so that was added bonus! Owners are very friendly (except a couple of grumpy women!) and the young guy who runs the bar and does the Greek dancing is especially nice!:) Would defintely return, even though Svoronata is very quite and the last bus to Argostoli is half 2 in the afternoon!( and thats if it even turns up!) So you have to rely on taxis a lot - 15 euros one way! Crazy Georges bar is good for a cocktail or 2 and the Elia's restaurant at the nearby Astra Village is very nice for food. Ammes beach is about 10 mins away and its a lovely beach - what out for low flying planes though! In Argostoli - best restaurant is 'Elios' on the waterfront. Its really friendly, lush food and really cheap!

This was our second visit to the Pythos Apartments & we enjoyed every minute. We were impressed with the apartments, was expecting v basic accommodation as it was a very cheap late deal but they were very clean & well maintained. We tended to wander down to the village to eat at 'Dum Spiro's Spero' taverna as the prices were reasonable, the staff v friendly & the food delicious.
We found everyone at the Pythos friendly & very helpful. I try not to go to the same place too often as there are so many beautiful places in the world, but I didn't want to leave Kefalonia & would love to return!

This was our second time here, we will most certainly return.
Yes, the accomodation is basic, but only the same as other Greek islands we have visited and the tranquility more than makes up for this.
Maria and her parents are wonderful people (although their english is a bit limited) who go out of their way to make you feel welcome and the bar food is brilliant.
The apartment was very clean, as was the pool, sun patio and surrounding lawns which were very green considering the heat.
There are several tavernas within an easy walk and a couple of nice beaches are fairly close, however hiring a car would be advisable to explore the rest of the island, which is worth doing.

pythos studios is in a wonderfull location with a good view of the mountains from the pool area, when me and my familly went we were located to the older version of the appartment and we were tottally un aware of that at that time, we found that the older studios were extremelly basic and old so we decided to upgradeand stay in the newer appartments and have a pool view and therefor it was easier to have our holiday living in two of them because we were a familly of five. the owners and the staff are really miserable and grumpy exept the young guy who works behind the bar and you can have good luaghes with him because he speaks good english. it has a lovely large swimming pool that you can cool off in while your getting your sun tan. The pool is always kept clean and bins are emtied and around pythos is kept really clean. the bar is a bit pricy for drinks and there is not alot of choice on the menue if you decide to dine at the tavern at pythos. i reccomend that you need a car if you stay at pythos because it is in a remote place. the nearest beach is called ammes beach witch is really nice because it has lovely sand and clear water although it does get busy and it can be a bit noisy because it is rite at the end of the airport runway and that beach is about a 10-15 minute walk through a shortcut from pythos. there is a number of tavernas down that beach road, wich is another 5 minutes from ammes beach. other than that pythos is a really nice resort to stay in.

Oct 2008, Mr D Bishop

The Pythos apartments were extremely basic ,which is fine if the rooms are kept clean and you have sufficient kitchen equipment at least to have 2 matching tumblers/crockery /cutlery.
However unfortuneatly we found in the two weeks we were there was very poor standards of cleanliness in our room, we had to ask after the 8th day of being there for clean towels and sheets !
The clean sheets were then left on the bed, we had to strip the old sheets and make up the bed with new sheets and pillowcases provided, coming on holiday one expects not to have to make up your own bed !!!!!
The kitchen equipment and utensils were virtually non existent.
The drain in the shower/ toilet area was partly blocked and even though this was reported , it was never resolved and therefore the smell of stagnant water remained in the apartment for our two week holiday.
Cleanliness of the balcony area was another area of concern , it had neither been swept or cleaned in the two weeks ,this was clear by the number of dead wasps and leaves that remained !

we've just come back from our holidays last week. Overall, we enjoyed our holiday but i just wanted to warn people who are considering going to Svoronata that the village is very spread out and there doesn't appear to be a centre to it (not that we could find!) and the map provided by first choice was very basic. so, be prepared for quite a bit of walking to get to most places and some of the shorcuts are rough tracks with no streetlights so take a torch! also, be warned that al-helias beach, although lovely is down a long & steep set of steps so not ideal for anyone with even a minor disability

Pythos Apartments were very basic but...

Aug 2008, Mrs Helen Macaulay

Pythos Apartments were very basic but clean. Kitchen equipment was poor with much lacking i.e 3 guests 2 knives!!
The pool was great and kept spotless by the handyman who washed all outside areas every day, emptied bins, communal and in apartments, daily and was available for other help at most times-He and his wife worked really hard
The pool bar was very expensive and the food and food choices were very limited and of poor quality. The owners were not very friendly either.
Apart from this we throughly enjoyed our stay on this beautiful Island with its fantastic beaches, and had a very relaxing time.
It would have been helpful if our reps could have made available local information on supermarkets etc. and short cuts to the beaches and restaurants ( fellow guests gave us this info)
We met some really lovely people at Pythos apartments and my daughter,
grand-daughter and I would love to go back one day.
