Tropicana Resort and Spa Hotel

Our trip to Koh Chang was going to be relaxing and peaceful but this was prevented by our stressful stay at the Tropicana resort.
After seeing the resort on the internet we thought it looked perfect but when we arrived at the Tropicana after a six hour trek from Bangkok, we were told that we were double booked for 2 nights of our 5 night stay (on the 30th of December and New Year's Eve even though the booking was made 6 weeks previously).
Without much explanation as to why this had happened (apart from the hotel admitting to us it was their fault) we were packed off to an alternative hotel which we were assured was of the same standard.
Unfortunately the Resortel was not only nowhere near the same rating but it was in a unfinished state (still undergoing building work and with one unfilled pool) and our room was incredibly noisy with a road each side of the room; hardly the peaceful New Year break we wanted!
Although they rightfully arranged transport for us to and from the Tropicana so we could enjoy the facilities during the day and attend the New Year's Eve gala dinner, the time taken between requesting the transport to actually arriving at the resort was often around one hour; valuable time of our holiday that was being eaten up unnecessarily and not the kind of time you want to waste on New Year's Eve!
After many arguments with the staff and the manager we did manage to get some sort of compensation - a refund for the two nights spent at the Resortel - and were luckier than many who got nothing. But more importantly we got nothing for the valuable time on our holiday wasted and the untold stress which in turn ruined our New Year.
The resort itself was quite nice; the bungalows are lovely although the food is more expensive than other restaurants which you can get to by a quick walk up the beach (which also serve much better food).
You can get room service at the Tropicana though and even they don't state it, you can get bottles of wine brought to the room (they don't have wine in the mini bar) which works out as quite reasonable although wine in Thailand is very expensive.
The internet facilities are very slow and expensive compared to the internet cafes in White Sand beach just up the road. The beach massages are good here but again there is a massage parlour on the beach next to the Tropicana (on the left). This is better and offers more services (e.g. facials, manicures etc).
All in all, although the Tropicana looks a pretty resort there are lots of pretty resorts in Koh Chang and the Tropicana just isn't worth the stress.
