" My brother and I took each of our... "

My brother and I took each of our families of 4 plus my mum to celebrate her 70th birthday. It was cheaper to fly to Germany from Glasgow than to get a weekend break at home!

First thing is that Frankfurt Hahn is 2 hours from Frankfurt - so be prepared for a long commute on landing.

However, you can trust the Germans to have a particularly efficient public transport and, from when we arrived to when we left, it proved to be just that. With a daily family transport ticket covering trains, trams and the underground costing a mere €7.80 it was also tremendous value.

Frankfurt itself is mostly a modern city, a financial centre with an abundance of new high-rise office space...so what for a young family then?
We hopped on the city bus tour first which shows the older sights of the city over a period of 2-3 hours. However this time frame includes a couple of guided walks which were well timed for our impatient 2 year old.

Ambling by the riverside took up the rest of the afternoon with ample opportunity to sample apple wine and watch the locals run, skate, ride or plain relax at comfy outdoor bar/coffee houses.
The next day meant the zoo! Great for the kids with most animals pleased to perform for the crowd (instead of hiding away as in this country).

Our hotel was fantastic value with a huge family room easily accommodating 2 buggies, the travel cot (provided gratis by the hotel) and all our bags. Breakfast (served until 11:30 on Sundays) was generous and had something for even the fussiest. We found all staff to be attentive and helpful without being overbearing - more remarkable with 3 toddlers running and crawling around their ankles!

As to pubs and clubs - who knows...but Frankfurt did the job for us - mum went home delighted with her surprise trip away with all her family!
