The Datai Langkawi

Yes the Datai was nice but certainly not something we would rave about. I felt the hotel looked tired overall, I just didn't get that "buzz" from being there. We had just come from Pangkor Laut which definitely had the X-factor and I just think we found the Datai let us down after hearing so many glowing reports of it. We were expecting a lot more. We stayed here for a week as part of our honeymoon in June 2005 and absolutely loved every minute. We stayed in a jungle villa, which was superb and especially enjoyed listening to the sounds of the forest as it come alive in the afternoon. From our villa balcony we saw monitor lizard, wild boar, hornbills, dusky leaf monkey and macaques. We were upgraded to a villa through our travel agents beacuse we stayed 7 nights, but if this deal isnt available it is definitely worth paying the extra rather than stay in the main building. <br... more

I have read. many reviews raving about how wonderful the Datai was, well if you like 3 star accommadation where tiles in pool are broken, concrete around the pool flaking off, rooms are small and need refurbishing, no privacy in main rooms from neighbors, the gym was dirty and smelt horrible. Only positives are nice beach good service,good food and the spa all being in the rain forest if that is what you would like, but this property is nt value for money, you can not even see the beach from most rooms. We stayed at the Datai over Christmas and thought it was generally excellent. The rooms in the main building are fine, though here and there showing their age. The restaurants are good, though the servings at the Thai restaurant are perhaps pushing the limits of minimalism. A special Christmas eve buffet on the beach was very good as was the setting and service. Generally, the service is very good. Perhaps too much so. I stayed at the Datai with my girlfriend for one week. I wish we had planned for longer. The hotel was first class in every respect and the staff in it's entireity were faultless. The rooms were superb, housekeeping first class, the restaurants were varied and the food good. One night we both experimented with a dish that we didn't like but the preparation and presentation were not to blame - we just didn't like it - it happens sometimes. Just got back from a week at The Datai, and it was a great getaway. The service is pretty amazing....wherever you are at the resort, there are always 3 or 4 staff members nearby to fulfill anything you desire. We stayed in a villa, and it was wonderfull to wake up to the monkeys playing in the trees right off our lanai. However, one day six monkeys got into our room and made quite a mess of things....it was our fault...we didn't lock the lanai door. Housekeeping did a great job of making everything right though. My girlfriend and I had the luxury of spending 3 nights both here and the new Four Seasons resort. Overall we both feel the Datai was better! Why? SERVICE: Mostly, the Datai service was phenomenal, there were zero glitches throughout. It was a joy to walk to the beach and have people know your name so quickly. We felt completely relaxed and pampered. (The Four Seasons service was generally outstanding but there were some basics that were completely unacceptible for a 6 star. We have just spent 7 nights at the Datai and it was the most luxurious, beautiful, magical, memorable and relaxing holiday i have ever had. The setting of the hotel and in particular of the villas amongst the rain forest is just breathtaking ... and its right next to the beach too. And if you enjoy nature you are absolutely surrounded by every sort of animal- monkeys, squirrels, flying squirrels, eagles, kingfishers, monitor lizards to name but a few. Image the Ewok Vilage from RETURN OF THE JEDI converted to a luxury hotel and you might be able to imagine what this awesome, eye-popping resort is like. But you really have to go there to experience it. Unique, romantic and fun. The restaurants are all uniformally excellent (we ate at them all) and the jungle villas are really secluded and cool. Be sure to visit the Gulai House in neighboring hotel for great Thai food. Also "Malaysian night" at the beachside restaurant was terrific. My wife and I had a memorable honeymoon... more
