Great location, friendly staff
8 / 10

We've just returned from a 12 night stay at the Berjaya Langkawi and had a lovely time. The resort itself, although big, is in an amazing location with the rainforest meeting the sea. The food (especially breakfast!) is good and varied and the facilities are clean and well maintained.
My only gripe would be the use of the minibuses on the resort. Guests are able to just call up a bus to collect them from their chalet & take them to reception/lobby/restaurant/pool etc whenever they like. Very convenient but it ruins the peace and quiet of what is supposed to be a rainforest retreat and if your chalet is positioned by one of the access roads (most are so check beforehand) you'll get buses running at all times or people stood by your balcony waiting for one. Most of the facilities are only a short walk & you get to see so much on the way (monkeys, squirrels, lizards etc) so it seems such a shame to ruin it.
That said, the staff are very friendly and helpful and the rooms (rainforest studio) are lovely. The resort is a short walk from the Severn Wells waterfall which offers great swimming in the freshwater pools (if you can handle the long climb to the top!). I mention this as the beach at the resort does have the odd jellyfish which may put off some swimmers. The cable car is also a short walk offering amazing views of the island and Thailand beyond.
It is definitely worth hiring a car as the Island is easy to navigate and offers plenty of things to see/do if you get bored with the resort. Eating out is also generally cheaper off site with plenty of restaurants locally or if you prefer something fancy the excellent Bon Ton near the airport.
If you're looking for a relaxed resort holiday but with something different, you can't go too far wrong with the Berjaya.

Great location on the beach -- accommodation is in various styles of tree lodges --
go for the upgrade to the premium land villas - fantastic 56 sq m , huge balcony facing the sea.
Only real gripe is that the pool whilst quite spectacular does not have that much space around it and gets quite "tight" when lots of people around --- could also do with a better beach bar on the beach itself , which I think they may be building as we write.
Altogether not bad for a three star hotel in a fantastic quite island.
Do the yacht trip and the day out to the mangrove swamps.. Brilliant!!.

We had a great time here at the Berjaya resort and spa. We spent our first Xmas away from friends and family and still had a great time.
The rooms were clean and tidy and with a sea facing view, who could ask for more. Like all resorts it was slightly more money to eat and drink here, but it was all good.
The staff at the resort could not do enough for you and nothing was too much trouble.
The natural beauty of the island has to been seen with your own eyes, it’s simply breathtaking.
I can really recommend both resort and island. It’s what dreams are made of.
Be sure to have a treatment at the spa, well worth it.

We spent 14 nights at this resort and quite simply it was one of the best holidays that we have been fortunate to go on despite having experience of the Far East / Caribbean plus the more usual European destinations.
I will not bore you all with the details of the hotel, it’s pretty much as the brochure or hotel website says it is but what is perhaps not appreciated is the natural beauty of the surroundings which are simply stunning.
We had visited Langkawi previously and knew how good the island was. We previously hired a car and ended up having a few drinks at the Berjaya simply relaxing. Having walked around the complex and seen the chalets on the hill we simply knew we had to return to the island and stay at the hotel because of its beauty.
On our arrival at the Berjaya, check-in was nice and smooth and the rooms we got were stunning with views over the bay through the lush vegetation. The pool was slightly busy but not like a European lager drinking destination and it was a relaxed atmosphere with people just simply soaking up the sun with a few drinks either at the pool bar or beach restaurant which were both excellent. If you got bored at the pool then the beach was really nice with plenty of sun shade if required.
If I had a dislike about the Berjaya it would simply be that the hotel is more remote and dining options are more limited. The hotel food is very, very high quality with good range but you do pay more for food and drinks than the external restaurants which many other hotels in Langkawi are located against. This can be seen at 'happy hour' when everyone filled up with the Tiger beer as it was quite expensive around the pool at other times.
Please do not think that this is a very expensive place to holiday - it is not. It’s just more expensive than it need be since you can have a good meal for a family and drinks all night for £30 at outside restaurants yet the same food may be £45 / £50 in the hotel.
I recommend this hotel very highly.
If we ever win the pools / lottery then we will have a holiday at the Datai in Langkawi. Until then, the Berjaya is a brilliant second choice and one we will revisit sooner rather than later. We just need to take a few pounds more to cover the food / drinks bill.

This tiny gem of an island in the...

This tiny gem of an island in the south east asian country of Malaysia is perfect for anybody who wishes explore a truly unspoilt paridise. The flight from Birmingham International airport was thirteen hours in duration, however staff were both efficient and welcoming.
On arriving in Langkawi we still felt pretty refreshed as every effort was made during the flight for our comfort. The airport in Langkawi was modern in design and the check point staff again efficient. The car that was sent to meet us was prompt and of high specification, the driver carried all luggage and this made the transfers effortless.
The Bejaya itself was an impressive array of cabins nestled amongst the backdrop of the Malaysian rain forrest, and centered around a large well appointed brick built hotel accomidating several restaurants and bars. The rooms were both clean and spacious with good quality furniture and a well stocked minibar. Internet connections and telephone points were also present.
The food served in the variety of restuarants was of excellant standards and was varied in taste and culture. The people of Malaysia were more than welcoming and could not do enough for us. They were also not intrusive in any way as discretion and politeness was always paramount.
The local community was again interesting and varied, the beach was just as if it had been taken from a picture book, extremly clean, idillically golden and i could not have picked a better piece of paradise. There is plenty to do on this island from trying endless sporting activities e.g snorkeling, diving to taking a ride on the magnificant cable cars.
The cuisine is produced to a high standard and many different cultures seem to come together to host a tantilising array of mouthwatering fresh foods. There is a taste to suit almost every pallet from Japanese, Thai, and Malaysian to Indian, English and also a McDonalds.
The cost of goods in langkawi are more than reasonable e.g 200 cigarettes cost just £6.00, clothes are also cheap but of good quality and cd's and dvd's are again extremely cheap but are of international quality.
The whole experience was totally relaxing, enthaling and pure heaven. This island is a real find, it is exceptionally clean, welcoming and breathtaking i would go back there tomorrow if I could.
