We stayed at the Taxiarchis hotel, I and a couple of mates all of us with disabilities, affectionately named the boys, we went between the dates of 12th Sept to 26th Sept. 2007.
The first thing I’ve got to say FANTASTIC, we had a great holiday, right from being met at the airport by Barbara our rep it was the start of one of the best holidays to Greece I've been on. Although it is a very hilly island we coped quite well in spite of our mobility difficulties.
The accommodation if just typically Greek, sparse to say the least, it was clean tidy and cleaned every day except Sundays. Frank and Eva the owners were very helpful. We ate both in the village and down by the harbour, the best we found was in the village was Zoi's. Extremely welcoming and couldn't do enough for us, for this reason I would highly recommend her taverna, as well the food was of a very high standard and reasonably priced around 50Euros for a starter drink and main meal for 3, we thought this was good value.
We hired a car as we couldn’t get a quad bike or buggy; there are some but few and far between. Thus we travelled all round the island, going over the mountains. You need to be careful as the 1/10 hills and hairpin bends are quite tricky. The monastery was worth a visit, it incorporates two museums at 1.5 euros per person. You can get there by bus, car, bike or boat.
The hustle and bustle of the Yalos harbour area (main town) is a very nice place to visit or stay. Many shops, bakeries souvenirs, carpets (be prepared to pay up to £9,500) for carpets though. The tavernas and bars are ok too. If you've not already done so you must try a Giros, 2euros a go excellent.
