stayed at the Mambo between 30th May and 13 June 2011. Apparently this hotel was being closed at the end of June and already a lot of the services were closed. The Italian restaurant and the Steakhouse/grill were closed the entire time we were there. There was no... more

I retured from the Riu Mambo two days ago, and although my enire party had a very enjoyable time, I felt I had to share this as women on their own and young families may not find it a suitable destination. At weekends the hotel is open to all local people, and although the... more

Only The Good Gets Reviews??
I'm in my very early thirties just to give you a little idea about myself. My future wife and I were vacationing at the Riu Mambo last year around November and things were off to a great start. The resort was beautiful. The layout of the hotel was perfect. I was impressed with rooms and the food. What I wasn't impressed with was the huge beetles that were in the room. The people across the hall were being bitten by black insects in their sleep leaving crazy red rash marks covering their entire bodies. No one did anthything to help. absolutely nothing. Do not take the bus tour. It will bore you out of your mind. The male staff did nothing but try to force themselves upon my friends wife and my girlfriend. the constant interuptions from them while we tried to relax was terrible to go through. The resort also allowed about 20 young men all to room up together in two rooms. These boys, more or less, also did nothing but try to settle in with the woman that accompanied us. It worked!!! They won! They continued the rest of the week uttering threats to me and my friend. As for my future wife .....she doesn't exist anymore and as for my friends wife....... Well lets just say he needs to open his eyes a little.
Great Vacation Dec-13 to Dec-20
I just want to start out that this site for reviews was very helpful. When I got to the Mambo, I felt like I knew exactly what to expect. Some of the reviews mentioned smelly pillows but still gave the resort an excellent rating. This was something that I didn't understand. I asked myself, "how can you have smelly pillows and still love the stay", but now I know. The pillows did smell, but we brought our own pillow cases and when they changed the sheets (maybe they even changed the pillows) we didn't need them anymore. I went to the Mambo on Dec 13- 20th, with my boyfriend. He has been on many all inclusive trips and would never return to the one he has gone on, but this one he would definitely return. FOOD - food was good, there was definitely alot of variety. I mostly sticked to the chicken and seafood (fish, shrimp, calamari, mussels). They always had fish, but the others were only once in a while. I found out on the way home that the cheese and milk came from goat. I don't eat goat, but I'm glad I found out AFTER heheheh. DRINKS - The alcohol drinks were nice, I didn't really get too drunk (even tho I was drinking alot). However, when I was drinking the rum in my room (mini bar) I definitely felt that!!! You have to try their banana mama. Sooo good!! Don't drink too many coconut drinks, it's a natural laxitive <-- spell check!! ROOM - The picture of the room that I saw with the guy by the sliding doors and the woman on the bed was exactly how the room looks, and that's the standard room. Taking showers was always a surprise, the temperature of the water would change alot during my shower. But the room was great!! As mentioned before, the pillows did smell. BUGS - we spent some nights on the beach watching the stars (this was the best part of the trip) the sky was so clear. We think we got bitten by sand flees, we're still not sure. After getting bitten, we decided to end our star gazing by the beach and washed our sandals before entering our room. This helped alot. WEATHER - the weather was excellent. There was alittle spitting of rain one day for less than 5 minutes around noon, we just swam in the beach and didn't feel it at all. TOURS - We went on the catamaran and the puerto plata city tour. On this site, there was mention of just taking a cab because it was cheaper, I was glad I went with the tours, I felt safer. But that's up to you. We even met nice people that stayed at our resort from the tours, so that was a bonus. I got sick on the catamaran (just on the way to our destination) the crew was great about it. So don't be afraid of getting sick!!! If you are the type to get sea sick, stay at the front of the boat. This really helped on the way back. The city tour is where you will see all the people really hounding you about buying their products. All the shops are identical, so you can banter alot with the price. We didn't really find anything there that we wanted. But they were really willing to drop their price. Overall, I loved our trip. This was my first all inclusive vacation, and I would definitely go back. Highly recommended, but I would like to travel to other places before returning. I will however want to stay with the RIU chain of resorts.
Uk Review
I went with my girlfriend (we're late twenties), on the 29th Nov - 13th Dec 2003. We went to the Dominican last year as well (Hotel Hacienda in Cofresi) I read the reports about how wonderful it was and was really looking forward to it. Seeing is believing and this place is excellent value. Firstly, because you can use all three Riu hotels, and the are all right next to each other, its like being in your own mini resort. You don't wear wrist bands like other hotels. Everything is all inclusive. There is entertainment in all three hotels, all day and all evening. The evening shows were great fun. I didn't partake in any of the day activities, preferred to read on the beach. But the animation team don't hassle you at all, and they are all so friendly. The Beach is first class. It is private, with two headlands on either end. There are loads of sun beds, no shortage at all. The beach is cleaned every day and so are the sun beds. The beach is line with palm trees, so there's plenty of shade. The beach is sandy, the water is lovely and warm, with fairly calm waters. There is a reef stretching the whole length of the beach, so the beach is sheltered. Around one of the headlands is a kind of lagoon/bay, which is very sheltered and that is where all the watersports are (absolute perfect setting - very safe). The pools are all very nice, again plenty of sunbeds and shade (I didn't go in the pool at all, because the beach was so inviting). The food is great. Plenty of choice and they did pizzas and chips at every sitting, so if you didn't fancy trying some of the more exotic dishes, there were always the home favourites (I tried virtually everything!) All the staff are very friendly, and all willing to help. Our maid was fantastic, making swans and other shapes out of our towels every day! To summarise it is a definite 5*, a 5* place with 5* treatment! And the fact that you can use all three hotels, makes it very unique amongst all the other worlds All Inclusive hotels!
Simply PARADISE!
It has been a few years since visiting the Rui Mambo, but we absolutely LOVED it! The dining was wonderful, very accomodating and entertaining staff, CLEAN rooms, the best vacation we have taken. I strongly suggest the "Jeep Tour"! We have been on several vacations since visiting Puerto Plata and still have not enjoyed ANY as much as we enjoyed our stay there! We are eager to get back!
very nice vacation
My husband and son and I stayed at the Riu Bachata, in Puerto Plata April 2003 and really enjoyed it. We will be going back there. The rooms were clean, the resort spotless, food was good, beach was beautiful and the staff were professional and friendly. And since there are more Riu hotels right besaide each other, you had access to more than one resort, so boredom was not an issue. Really enjoyed our stay there.
Rui Mambo -- wonderful visit!!
My boyfriend & I just returned from our visit of 7 nights -- November 22nd thru the 29th. Had a wonderful time in the DR. Cannot recommend the place enough. It is absolutely beautiful and so are its people. The Riu Mambo was splendid -- the beaches have to be some of the nicest we saw. Note to the ladies -- bring your own hair dryer as they do not supply them. The service and the food were excellent. Absolutely amazed at the consistent quality and variety of the buffet offerings. Shows were fun -- good for a laugh. Brush up on the Karoake -- you will find the opportunity to entertain. Regarding tours -- DO NOT purchase through the hotel -- they really mark up the price. We found an EXCELLENT value through the vendors on the far East end of the beach, beyond the point of the signs warning you not to proceed any further. No fear -- the vendors that populate the fringes are extremely nice and helpful. We saved huge $$ by purchasing the same tours offered by the hotel staff. Look for Camacho -- the guy with the dreadlocks, he will hook you up with the best deals. Best wishes on a fantastic trip. We will be back there again to see the friends we made there.
Can't wait to return
My family and I have just returned from the Riu Mambo and we can honestly say that it is the first time that we have said that we would return to the same place. The beaches on the southern coast are far better and are more like what you would expect of a carribean island, but it was still very nice all the same. We would definately recommend the paradise island trip and the Dolphin Encounter, but if you decide to go on the Horse Riding Day, if you are male, beware, as the owner insists on helping you down from your horse and, well, shall we say that she likes to make sure that she has a good grip'!
A Great Holiday
Just returned from my second visit to this property this year. It is an excellent value. The walk from the lobby to the farthest room is about five minutes, but that may be the only exercise you get all week. The food is excellent and i much prefer the buffet over the alecarte. All the staff are friendly and will go out of there way to make sure your stay is perfect, just ask. The free mini bar in your room is a nice touch. Don't miss your massage on the beach. The resort is very clean and I never saw a bug when I was there in May or November, not even a mosquitto.
Ola!!!!
At Riu Mambo from 10th November to 24th November. 2nd time there!! Great fun once again. Dolphin encounter trip was well worth it. The animacion team were excellent - "sleepy sleepy, clappy clappy" Favourites were Felix, Amar and Crazy Franklin who really was crazy!!!!! A holiday with great memories........
Rui Mambo
Just got back from a weeks vacation, before leaving everyone had said how great the Rui hotels were. Well, it starts off with the long walk to the room from the hotel lobby, The room was OK, not a 4* rating as described in the travel books. The staff all were pleasant, agreeing with a smile on whatever you were saying but not actually understanding your needs/requests. Since there was 3 adults sharing the room, we requested another set of towels, after 3 phone calls, and 2 visits to the front desk they were finally delivered. Food was good, but after a few days it all tastes the same. Dinner dining on day 3 was, disgusting, BUGS, BUGS, BUGS big black bettles, on the tables, landing on people, and the staff acted like nothing was going on, 1 person in our party, froze at the sight of them, and the staff just laughed. We left the dining room grossed out, if those bugs were landing on people and tables, don't tell me they didn't land in the food that everyone was eating. The next day returning to the dining room, most everyone in the area was laughing to see that we had returned. The best part of the trip was the bus picking us up to leave the place.
