We love the laid back way of life at Georgioupolis and staying at the Deep Blue Sea Apartments is perfect. Situated only 10 paces from the sandy beach and 15 paces to the clear sea, the apartments are lovely, offering clean and tidy accomodation and a warm and friendly welcome from all the family and staff. After a hard day's sunbathing, sitting on your spacious balcony, sipping a drink and watching the sun go down, there is no better place to be.
The village offers numerous eating options and it has become a second home to us recently. We are just about to book up again for this year and cant wait to get back to the Deep Blue Sea for another totally stress-free holiday

These studios are cleaned every day....

These studios are cleaned every day. The family are very pleasant and helpful. Our room faced a sun terrace with a beautiful view over the sea. The Deep Blue Sea taverna is very good and excellent value.
The resort of Georgiopolis has everything you might need - one bank, car hire, plenty of shops and tavernas, boat trips and walks. The sandy beach is great for all ages and there are just a few rocks to make snorkelling interesting. The rivers are pretty and the town is well looked after.

My wife and I returned to the Deep...

Nov 2007, Batdad

My wife and I returned to the Deep Blue Sea Apartments in Georgioupolis for two weeks for the fourth time in five years - on this occasion without any other members of our family. As usual, I would award full marks to the Aretaki family for the standard of the accommodation, and for their helpfulness, friendliness, care, and concern.
We ate around very enjoyably, and, as usual, found no better cuisine than that provided by Athena at the Deep Blue Sea. Another eating experience that we particularly enjoyed was provided by the Vasilikos, just around the corner, which provides Italian dishes, as well as Greek.
Georgioupolis is a pleasant resort with many facilities. As well as the huge beaches, a large variety of shops and tavernas, one can visit many interesting sites in the locality via the road trains, explore the river by paddle-boat, and book excursions via coach and by boat from the harbour. We tried the boat trip with great enjoyment - none of the loud lewdness voiced by the "captain", or leering visits to the local naturist beaches that we've suffered on some such trips in Greece and Spain (sorry if this comes as a disappointment to anyone), but bathing in secluded bays and wholesome food and drink.
We booked a trip to Santorini on the new catamaran ferry, which has cut the time of the journey from around six hours to two hours. There's also a crazy golf course - we had plenty to occupy us during our time there.
In spite of all this, I have to deduct a point from the resort, as this year it has suffered a little from the antics of local boy racers who think it a great jape to rev up as they ride their bikes past the horses, and their riders as they pass along the promenade from the local stables (another facility that I should have mentioned above.) It's a tribute to the stables that their horses reacted so calmly.
I even wondered briefly whether the motor-bike antics had been devised by the stable in order to demonstrate the discipline of their steeds! The bikes also tended to roar by long after dark. We had to shut the windows and turn on the air-conditioning for coolness, in order to shut out the noise.
In our experience, Cretans tend to be very concerned about the behaviour of their offspring, and we're hoping that these matters will be addressed before our return.
Yes - we do intend to go back.

Following our previous experiences...
9 / 10
Dec 2006, Batdad

Following our previous experiences here, we were not surprised to find The Deep Blue Sea as excellent as ever.
Rooms were cleaned regularly, and towels etc. replaced frequently. One refinement is that mosquito netting had been added to our room facilities. Staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
Athena's cooking was as delectable as ever - there's no better food in Georgioupolis than that at the Deep Blue Sea, in my opinion, although local culinary standards are generally high. One of her daughters, Litsa serves with a ready smile, full of information about the menu and other matters - in fact there's quite a family feel about this place, which is used a great deal by locals (which is a recommendation in itself.)
We ate out in other places too, and can recommend one of the tavernas on the busiest street leading into the village from the beach, at the foot of the hill, which has taken up Italian cuisine, and serves the best pizzas I've tasted for years.
The Aretaki family are so delightful that for their sake I feel inclined to give this holiday full marks again. I'd award 9.75 if allowed, the only blemish on our fortnight being a handful of British holidaymakers (what other nationality would one expect?) who tried on a couple of occasions to turn the resort into Malia.
One night it was drunken and obscene shouting at around 2 a.m. and on another, we were woken at a similar time by drunks leaping with much shouting and bad language into the neighbouring swimming pool. They were eventually shamed by an uprising of holiday makers who yelled at them to go away.
The fact that this kind of behaviour doesn't seem to be a regular feature of Georgioupolis may be due to the presence of a police station in the village.
Anyway, these were minor incidents. Somehow Georgioupolis contrives to be busy and peaceful at the same time. A fine centre for shopping, sight-seeing, beach activities, or just lazing with a Mythos enjoying the views.
Health allowing, we intend to go back - and stay at the Deep Blue Sea, of course!

We have booked the Deep Blue Sea...

We have booked the Deep Blue Sea Studios and apartments again, for 2006, after two splendid holidays there. On the first occasion, we went with a family group of seventeen people (including the children) in 2003, and returned with just two fewer in our group in 2004. Only illness prevented us from returning in 2005, and with considerable joy, we're due back again in 2006.
The fact that we'll be reduced to seven people reflects the ways in which families tend to go their separate ways as children become independent, rather than any dissatisfaction with this resort, or the accommodation.
My wife and I have been visiting Crete frequently over the last ten years, and have never been disappointed. Nevertheless, we view Georgioupolis as a delight. The glorious beach is well documented, as are the village facilities of tavernas and snack-bars. There is far more, however. One can hire pedalos on the river to explore the water flora and fauna at close quarters.
The road train goes, not only to lake Kournas, but to other places, including the superb waterfall village of Argrioupolis. There is a fun park for the family, that includes crazy golf, as well as its own refreshments. One can book tours to such places as the Samarian and Imbros Gorges. One advantage of Georgioupolis in this regard is that the road distance to the Samaria Gorge is less than just about any other resort from this destination, so that one can make the journey (ferries and all), do the walk, and return to Georgioupolis in time for a refreshing swim before dinner!
The Deep Blue Sea, we found to be excellent accommodation - spotlessly clean, with the most helpful of staff and proprietors. One can book directly on the Internet with Athena (the younger. Her mother, also Athena, supervises the accommodation, and does the cooking at the attached taverna) The food ranks, in our experience, amongst the best of the very high standard in the resort. The accommodation is based right beside the beach, with the village, and all its facilities only a few minutes away.
Just one example of the care that they took of us is that when we returned for our second year, it was to discover that they had kept all our inflatable toys for our use the next time. We look forward to returning again.
