Farol Design Hotel

The landscape is fantastic. The view over the sea is wonderful. The staff is really gentle. And the hotel is really, really trendy.

This is a designer hotel and while the inside is perfectly fine, it is externals that are truly impressive. The hotel is focussed around the terraces and pool: facing rtght out to sea on a rocky coastline with nothing between you and - well, the horizon. The architecture is stylish, and I particularly liked the way the terraces merge in with the rocks: sort of a zen-garden with stones emerging from the floor like sculpture, or paths meandering into the fierce rocks, and down towards the sea to end with a private pation and two... more

This place comes with a crazy location, on a rocky cape, less than a champagne cork's throw from the water, The design is rather designish, (modern but not very special if you've stayed in a few 'modern' hotels. Farol has a great design, trendy but still classy. The pool area is build over the sea what makes the landsscape very impressive. We took the advise from one of the Tripadvisor reviews and booked a standard room. Room was quite small and had not had a beautiful view, but it was nicely hidden from other guests. Every afternoon when we got back to Farol there was clean room with some chocolates and weather forecast for tomorrow waiting for us. We stayed for one night on the 24th of April. I had a booked a landview room and specified that i wanted to be in the modern part of the Hotel (thanks to the previous reviews). The Hotel is really in a very nice location, litteraly sitting on the sea. The Terrace is modern, with up-to-date chairs and table and nice relaxing mats around the pool. We stayed at the Farol Design Hotel on the weekend of 19 to 21st June 2009. We were given a standard room in the older part of the building. The room was small, some 13 square meters, plus bathroom. It was nicely decorated, but not really what we would expect from a design hotel; the design rooms are in the newer part of the building, though. The bathroom was very nice, with a hydromassage bathtub with shower. The basin was very small and there was just minimal space to put your own tooth brush and toiletries. We've stayed at the Farol 4 times in the last couple of years & are going back again in June, we absolutely love the hotel. The standard rooms they have are by no means 5* but everything else about the hotel more than makes up for it. Having a yummy breakfast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is the best way to start the day. The hotel is a short stroll to the marina - highly recommend Latitude 38 for lunch or dinner - and only a few mins walk to Cascais. My Fiancé and I stayed at the Farol Hotel for 2 nights at the end of June and found the Farol the be the perfect luxury getaway from a stressful London life. As soon as you walk up to the hotel you can see straight through the hotels floor to ceiling glass doors to the Atlantic Ocean. The pool area is amazing and you get to listen to Ibiza style mellow sounds whilst relaxing on a padded double white lounger while ordering cocktails and bar snacks from the attentive staff. Although the Farol reviews we read on tripadvisor were not very encouraging, we still decided to give it a try for our honeymoon based on the extremely appealing website of the hotel...But what a terrible mistake. The website in question is misleading... "We do not have anyone to help you with the luggage and the pool is out of service but you can use the one of the hotel next door" This was the first things we've been told at our arrival. As you walk into this hotel and witness the stunning views and contempary surroundings you feel you have found fantastic place.This soon changes when you realise that the fundamentals of running a hotel are not understood here. Staff are polite but woefully short of training and the rooms are poorly maintained and basically cleaned, a long long long way off 5 star standard. The chef seems to be very creative and the restaurant is worth a go if you can put up with the service!
