Good For the Money and Location
I'm a travel agent and after getting reasonable feed back from clients decided to stay at the Amaraigua for a few days. The hotel advertises as being 3* and that rating is about right, The hotel is only small and some of the 1st floor rooms are small but big enough, they are clean but basic. The food again was actually quite good for a 3 star and the restaurent staff couldn't do enough for you, no one should ever go hungry here. Everyone keeps moaning about the pool been small, I totally disagree as i have stayed in many 4 & 5 star hotels around the world with much smaller pools that the one here, also the sea is less than a metre so what more can you ask for? The entertainment wasn't up to much but some of the shows were funny , the staff did their best. to sum it all up if you are looking for cheap basic but clean accomodation in Malgrat then this hotel is for you. If you are looking for a 4 of 5 star hotel then you will be dissapointed
Poor poor poor
We also were told 4star but I've seen better 2stars. Feel sorry for anyone just flying out! I read the reveiws before going and some said the hotel was fantastic and some said it was not too bad. I'm not a five star man but the standards at this hotel were poor. Reception/ Check in- Not too bad actually. Hotel reception looked clean and check-in staff were freindly. They spoke very good English. It was fast and we were off up to the room. Room- On the 1st floor. The hotel is not that big so it didn't really matter where your room was. We didn't have a big walk to get anywhere. The room was small. 3 people in a room that would just about be big enough for 2. We had to climb over a double bed to get to the balcony. We were unlucky with the balcony!! Most rooms had a decent sized balcony with table and a few chairs. A few rooms had corner balconies ours included. There was just about enough room for one person standing. The room looked clean but on a closer look not very clean at all. Towels were soiled and bath area very moldy! Not even a plug for the sink and nowhere to stand our toilet items. To sum up- The room was poor. We asked to be moved but hotel was full so no chance. Food/ Drink- If the hotel was bigger, the selection would have been better. Not much choice food wise. Food was ok, seemed well cooked etc but was often cold. Towards end of week were ate out! Staff doing the snacks did'nt smile!! Staff behind the bar just grunted. Really unhelpfull and obviously not enjoying their work. Beer was poor. Small plastic cups etc. Pool- Too small! Not enough sunbeds. No lifeguard to watch the kids. Bins around the pool overflowing with litter. Sunbeds broken. Entertainment- Dull! Our youngster enjoyed the parrot and snake shows. He enjoyed the pool/table tennis games and kids film on the day that it rained. (Hotel reception flooded) Location- Good for the beach- 1min walk from hotel/bar etc. Not bad for the town apart from walking under the railway underpass. (Didn't hear many trains which was good) Shops 5mins walk. To sum up the hotel was poor and everyother family we spoke to said the same. Even the Spanish were complaining at every verse end. We were unhappy about the hotel from day one but tried not to let it ruin our holiday. We won't be going back!!!
Very good overall!!!
Hotel's in a great location right on the beach & close to the town for all the shops & bars. The hotels very clean! restaurant staff all very friendly food was ok always something to eat! snack bars also serves food till 6pm. Bar serves from 10am till 11.30pm. Also they've a childrens club playground & gym. entertainment was also very good for all ages our 2.5yr old loved the mini disco! We had a great week here very relaxing & a great bargain for 3 of us would cost more to stay in England i would certainly come back again. only negatives really are: underpass cause you get dropped off on the other side of the rd & its abit difficult when you've luggage & puschairs! was always light up & seems to be safe! Train line (if you're on the front would be noisy) luckly we had a fantastic seaview .
Friendly, clean but not the Ritz
After reading reviews on this hotel we were to say the least worried. However when we got there we had a brilliant time, everyone was really friendly. We didn't expect the Ritz as you pay for what you get although basic the hotel was clean bar staff were great and reception organised packed lunches for us every day we went out, if we got back early we just ate from the snack bar which was usually pizza / hot dogs & chips. The only bad point for children (didn't eccfect us though) I thought the pool was very small, this is probably because it is right on the beachwhich was great but the sea was only for strong swimmers not safe for children it went deep straight away and was very strong. I would recommend buying bottled water as the tap water was horrible and warm. the Aqua park was great and good value but the food was poor there and they chg €3.00 per sun bed can be hefty if you've got a family although there was only the 2 of us. Barcelona was a great day out, get the "BIG" bus you can ride all day & hope on and off every where great way to get round. Would recommend Tossa De Mar if you have a car, more traditional and less tourists here we went on a boat trip where we were able to jump off into the sea & swim up into a cave, very friendly pretty place. I would return to this hotel as a budget week away, its really not that bad so don't let bad reviews put you off go & make your own mind up!
Great Stay At The Amaraigua.
We have just returned from a 3 night short break at the Amaraigua Hotel. We booked it as a last minute deal through Fleetway Travel. There were 4 of us there aged fom 22 to 36. After reading reviews on here and elsewhere we were a little bit apprehensive about visiting the hotel. Those fears were allayed however as soon as we got there. If you have been reading other reviews you will have heard of "The Underpass". As the hotel sits on the beach with a Railway line between it and the main road you have to go through a small underpass to get to / from the hotel. After reading other reviews we were expecting the worst, however it was spotless - in fact it was cleaned every morning. As with everywhere in the world a bit of common sense will always help, like not walking through yourself at 3am swinging your purse around. Moving on to the hotel itself. When we arrived at reception we were very impressed by the cleanliness and tasteful modern decor. Check in was simple. The young Spanish reception was very friendly and competent at her job. We were given rooms 140 and 142. These rooms are on the right hand side of the building with a partial beach view. Other reviewers have complained that the rooms were a little small. We however found them to be more than adequate, in fact they were definitely above average in size. The room was spotless and was cleaned daily. The bathrooms were also clean, though the bath in room 142 could do with a good scrub. We were all inclusive so all food, drink and snacks were included. The drinks were the usual Spanish Fare and were fine though the bar staff serving them could do with a personality. The food was fine though the selection is a little limited for fussy eaters. It was all cooked perfectly and tasted great. I wasn't brave enough to try the horse sausages but plenty of people did. The pool area was pretty good as well, though it may get a little crowded during peak season. Being right on the beach is a bonus. The sand is a fine shingle that is a little rough on the feet but not overly so. I would not advise going too far in to the sea as it gets deep very close to the edge and the waves are quite strong. The entertainment at night wasn't anything to write home about; we had Karaoke on the Monday night and a Disco on the Tuesday. As with all holidays you make your own entertainment. We paid £169 each for the holiday. That included flights, transfers and hotel - which in turn included all food, drink etc- For that sort of money the place was great.
Wouldnt recommend
Have just returned from a 4 night stay at this hotel. The company website we booked through listed it as a 4 star, and as we had used this company before felt confident using them again. However this hotel is barely 3 star, definitely nothing higher. The facilities are very basic. The bar area/ tv lounge/ entertainment area (all one room) has what can be best described as dining tables and wooden chairs - no sofas or cushions. The noise is often quite unbearable as all the guests congregate there in the evening. The restaurant is again very average, serving below average food - lots of fried food and chips, small selection of vegetables, and if you arent there within half an hour of each meal starting forget it, there is a very limited choice as the food doesnt seem to be replaced very quickly. The bedrooms ( we booked a twin and a single ) both had 4 beds in them, 3 of which were pushed very close to each other, again the furnishings were very basic. There was no remote control for the tv.The shower didnt work in one room. Our rooms were on the ground floor, the twin had a small terrace which led directly onto the childrens play area. I imagine this could be quite noisy in the height of Summer, the single had a lovely view of a car park where touring camper vans parked up for the night. Only glad we didnt have a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the railway line!! The location of the hotel is excellent being right on the beach its a shame that the hotel was so poor. Other guests who shared our views said it was not a patch on many of the 3 star hotels in Malgrat. Our advice is to stay elsewhere.
Thieves opperate in this area
We have just returned from a 3 day trip to this hotel. We found the hotel to be adequate although the staff can be a little surley. The food was very plain but adequate. The hotel is situated on the beach and you have to walk through a underpass to get to the town. Although well lit they can be slightly daunting late at nght. On the second night we went into town and walked back through the underpass. The Area outside the hotel (From the underpass to the Hotel) is very badly lit and as we walked along this area we were attacked. It seems the thieves wait on the beach for the people walking back to the hotel. I was pushed to the floor and my wifes handbag was snatched from her. We of course gave chase but the dissapeared back into the dark. Always use Taxis when going to and from the hotel.
Don't make the same mistake
My partner & I (in early 20s) both stayed in this hotel for a week. On arrival I felt relieved (as i'd seen reviews not long before) as it looked nice on the outside and in reception. However when we were told to go to our room (120) we were less than impressed! The room was incredibly tiny, had a hole in the wardrobe which smelt of urine, stains on the curtains, and blood on a bed sheet. We paid just under £300 each for the holiday which is great for A/I but I have stayed in better quality cheap rooms in Blackpool!!! On the plus side the location is good on the beach front and across the road/train line from many shops and bars. We found most of the staff to be polite & helpful although some were moody as other guest also stated. The "entertainment" most nights was karaoke which isn't what we enjoy but it was fun just not multipule times a week! Other nights however shows were much better such as the parrot show. We would advise that couples DO NOT go here as it seems most things are aimed at children which is no fun when you don't have any. The food wasn't very varied and chips were always at lunch & dinner although you don't have to choose them. If you are a picky eater DO NOT go as some days the food was quite odd (squid rings and horse sausage etc). I am not a picky eater but found myself eating chips most days as the other foods on offer all had the same bland taste or were very very greasy. It is also true that the lights are turned off at around 11.45pm including balcony lights but its not too bad if you go out a fair bit like we did. Having some candles for the balcony was quite good for when we did want to sit outside. During our stay many people cheered for the lights to be kept on for longer so the staff did so. The hotel also seemed to be full of "lads out on the pull" which isn't great when their room is next to yours! The locals also seemed very arrogant and not helpful so we are glad to be back in Britain. We have both stayed in 3* hotels before and to give this one 3*s is a complete insult as most other guests also stated. We are both totally amazed at how some reviews for the hotel are good because during our stay the people we spoke to/heard had only bad things to comment on. In conclusion we will not be going to this hotel again or Malgrat de mar, We still managed to have a good holiday mainly because we went away from the hotel.
Not for the faint hearted
We went to this hotel last summer with 3 teenage boys. The price for all inlusive seemd too good to be true - and it was! We also booked through Fleetway and found them less than hepful, although we were very ahppy with the Ryanair flight. I have to say that the location is great, right on the beach, and the pool is pretty good. However if you have a room at the back of the hotel you are direcly beside the railway line. I have to echo the comments of the other correspondant regarding safety, one of our group, a 14 year old boy was assauled by the hotel maintenance man, if it had been in the UK he would have been locked up. The hotel would not take any action and the police were not at all helpful, telling us that if we wanted to press charges we would have to return for a court appearance. As we left he was at the reception area smirking. The food was pretty poor, school dinners would be good comparison. The drinks service is the redeeming feature, if you like to drink all day this is the place for you.
Not recommended
We are a couple on our first anniversary and a birthday (wife’s), too. We were a little concerned at the lack of reviews on this accommodation and had to rely on what little there was including a hotel owned website. Don’t be fooled by the website, it looks worse than it is in the photos. Firstly we booked through fleetway travel via the internet and although the price seemed fine - we did find it had lots of hidden problems and the worst being it was Ryan Air carrying us, NEVER again. Never having flown with them before we were prepared to give it a go despite not knowing who the carrier was to be until the documents arrived 10 days after booking. The hidden extras were lack of baggage allowance - we were 6kg over (we are used to having 20kg each not 15kg) that cost us close to £30. Ended up leaving stuff on the return journey to avoid the excess baggage charges Ryan air are keen on charging. We did opt for the taxi transfer rather than coach transfer but it wasn’t quite as cheap as was quoted by the travel agent - however we did learn through experience that the best option when travelling by taxi was to get the “non airport” taxi services - ie go past the white ones and opt for the private hires further up the line of cars. It should cost less than 40 euros (for the 35km journey) but the airport ones charge a fixed fee of 50 euros. The return journey was also done by private taxi and was correct. As far as Ryan Air is concerned we did fine the ticket less airline to be a farce as we were at the end of the queue for nearly 2 hrs despite being there an hour earlier than required. And if you are unlucky to be over the allowances you have to go and pay at a separate desk and then rejoin the queue. Further when we did get to go to boarding we were sent to the wrong gate as they had changed it without telling anyone. No seats allocated either so it’s an “it’s a knockout” style “free for all” Very expensive food on board too £15 for two baguettes and two drinks. Take your own is our advice. On arrival at Girona airport the fleetway rep was precious little help - and all we wanted to know was where we went for the taxis.!!!!!! On to the accommodation “The Amaraigua Hotel” formerly known as the Santa Susanna Hotel - supposedly three star but doubt it. First of all I must say that the Spanish Management team here are at best abysmal. Most do not understand English which I find very strange considering that this hotel is primarily for British guests. They showed a distinct lack of concern over major health and safety matters especially during the instances of “accidents“ here. In less than 7 days we witnessed one head injury requiring 8 stitches, one severely lacerated ankle (down to the bone) due to a dodgy drain cover, one fatal heart attack, one young child sucked into the Jacuzzi filtrations system, and a gashed wrist. All without exception met with derision and lack of concern by Spanish management. The first aid kit such as it was a disgrace - under lock and key and never available, no operational first aiders - no-one - not even the lady who tragically lost her husband was allowed to use the hotel phone and worse still the reception was asked to call the ambulance or a doctor when the heart attack was at the chest pain stage - it never happened - and 45 minutes later on enquiring about it more lack of interest - tragically that poor man died but it is felt had the phone call been made when asked he could have been alive today. DISGRACEFUL. They should be ashamed. Putting that aside - if you haven’t already decided not to go here - the room we had was great small, but comfortable - a great sea and beach view - the best room in the hotel - ROOM 214.….. Bathroom small, small bath with shower - so if you like baths don’t go here. Hot water is a bit hit n miss too. Air conditioning brilliant. Some rooms are infested with ants, our room floor wasn’t swept or mopped for three days despite complaints, similarly the basin and toilet weren’t cleaned either and toilet rolls ,must be in short supply. If you are travelling with a family opt for a family room as many rooms are very small - some people couldn’t get into bathroom or onto balcony or terrace without moving furniture. If you have teenagers don’t go here either - they will be bored silly within 48 hours. The All Inclusive option was ok but have had better - always plenty of variety, but chips every day - we only had one other potato option in 7 days. The Spanish could learn a thing or two from the Tunisians and Turkish. Drinks although plentiful and good measures are served in plastic cups ---- prefer glasses - I can understand around the pool but indoors and the communal entertainment area at night NO. The entertainment for adults at night is poor - we went out most nights - the mini-disco for kids is Ok and they seemed to enjoy it - the three girls who entertain have a very hard job to satisfy all but could be much better given more to work with. My impression about this hotel is that it is run with a very tight budget to the detriment of its customers. You cannot get a coffee before 8am when the restaurant opens for breakfast and the bar shuts at 1130pm without fail. Snacks aren’t available after 6pm. Don’t be fooled by the Parrot show either - what show!!!!! An opportunity for the Spanish to con you out of 10 euros for a photo taken without seeing it first……! Its only redeeming feature in my opinion is its location literally on the beach - no roads to cross, very close to the best range of bars some 4-5 English ones - The Robin Hood and Rovers Return very good and always lively. The Black Bull is quieter - the Legends pub is good too and all serve Stella, John Smiths and Fosters. All do breakfasts and good food. All very congenial as well. Along the front are the shops and usual tut type tourist goods. Its about an hour to Barcelona from Malgrat railway station (about 15mins walk form hotel) and costs 5.70 euros return and takes you right to Playa de Catalunya - the heart of Barcelona and only a hop skip and a jump to La Rambla with street entertainers and fine café bars and restaurants. At the end of this is the port area - A very fine city and worth a days visit. Marineland is apparently very good too if the kids like the water and you get good weather. The weather was brilliant about 28 degrees on average fine and sunny with only one day of cloud, but still very warm. Overall my advice Go to Spain by all means - Go to Costa Brava too just pay the extra and get some quality, don’t travel Fleetway, don’t travel Ryan air, don’t go to this hotel. We made the best of it and had great fun with Nick and Bekka, Lorriane and Ian, so cheers guys hope we keep in touch
