We were a bit worried after reading...
8 / 10
Aug 2005, Mrs D Springle

We were a bit worried after reading the reports, we needn’t have been. the staff were very friendly ,the room size is what you would expect of Spain, we had 4 beds, which were so comfortable.
We were a party of 4 ,my husband, son 17 and son 13 and myself. we had a fan in the room as well as air con which had to be put on from above the bed, next to the wall light switch, it said AC on it but you weren’t told that and so a lot of people we spoke to didn’t know that they had got it, others it had taken a few days to work out. We had taken some cloths hangers with us but there were plenty in the wardrobe.
The dinning room was to small to accommodate all the guests, and you did have to queue sometimes. the food was good with plenty of choice, typical of Spanish hotels(which we have been doing for over 25 years) we have had some better, but value for money it was. We paid under £1250 for a week, going on 8 Aug doing our own airport transfer, which cost 50 euro going in a taxi on the way there, and 52 euro on way back, it only took 30 minutes.
We took mosquitoes spray as the reports said there was a problem. We used it every evening at about 7oclock and the one dose last all night, we didn’t get bitten but did see people with bites all over them. yes there were Jellyfish in the sea but quite away out, we swam in the sea all week and never saw one by the shore. The pool was quite small but was never over crowded due to the sea being so near.
Not many sun beds , lots of people put towels on them and by 8.30 they are all gone. The snack bar was very limited with only pizza, chips and hot dogs, which finished at 6.30 no other cakes or crisps ect. were available unless you went to the vending machine.
The one thing that we didn’t like was the train line right in front of the hotel and running right along the front. which spoilt the holiday feel to the resort. To get over the road you had to use a subway.
Value for money we personally felt it was excellent ,and we had a fantastic time, being a small hotel mint al the children and adults got on very well and the hotel entertainment staff were very friendly. Would we go again? probably not as we didn’t like the resort.

My overall comment regarding this...
5 / 10
Jul 2005, Mr Ken Howley

My overall comment regarding this holiday package is that you get exactly what you pay for. Anyone expecting to get a 5 star hotel for 3 star prices will be in for a disappointment.
The room we had, was fairly cramped, but did come with a bathroom en suit and a television. There are no facilities to make tea or coffee. The rooms were swept and tidied daily, but the bed linen was not changed.
The food was adequate and I suspect aimed at what the hotel owners thought British holidaymakers would like. The staple diet seems to be some cheap variety of pork with chips, and, as an alternative, various types of battered fish.
The proximity of the hotel to the railway line meant that getting in to Barcelona was easy. The journey took about 80 minutes and cost 5.7Euro return
As other people have said, one of the main problems with this hotel is the abundance of mosquitoes. Some people were so badly affected they were on medication and confined to their room. We ensured our balcony doors were kept closed to try to keep them out. What made matters worse was that any plug-in repellent you may have used was ineffective because the electricity key is attached to the door key, so whenever you left your room the electricity supply was knocked off.
There is a lack of sunbeds, which means you either need to buy an airbed, or use the plastic chairs that are in the courtyard. These are not the most comfortable chairs in the world and will cause backache if used all day.
Would I go back again? If all I could afford was £250 and wanted a week all inclusive in the sun, then possibly yes. I would be better prepared for the mosquitoes next time and would make sure that I spent as much time as possible in Barcelona.

Good flight, just over 1 hour travel...

Jul 2005, Mr F Barss

Good flight, just over 1 hour travel from BARCELONA .Dropped off across the road so had to drag luggage through underpass and up other side. The hotel was unclean and infested with mosquitoes, several guests were badly bitten. The bar staff were very abrupt and at night all the lights were put out at 12pm. One in particular told a guest to move his a**** and took all drinks off the table. The lights were put out even the balcony lights were controlled by staff!. We went all inclusive but used the bars outside as the entertainment was very poor. The food was not very inventive or tasty. We tried to complain to a rep on the phone , but she was obviously controlled by the hotel. The only nice thing about the hotel was the food waitress. The only advice I can give is stay away, DON’T GO!!

Just back from a week at this...
7 / 10
Jul 2005, Miss M E Young

Just back from a week at this all-inclusive hotel having travelled with Fleetway travel via a Jet2 flight. Guests in our party were aged from 5 to 64 years old – nine in total. In writing a report, serious consideration must be made to the low cost element of this holiday (in comparison to Airtours etc) as it was cheap holiday during peak season.
The flight with Jet 2 was excellent, despite being a ticket less airline; seats were allocated at check in (unlike Easyjet). Transfer also was straight forward with only our party on the coach and took about 1hr 10 mins, although the coach did not have air conditioning.
On the return journey we had a 12 seater minibus and this was a struggle to fit nine passengers and all our luggage plus buggy – but we did it! The only comment I will make is that we were not pre-warned that the hotel is inaccessible to vehicles taller than a car so we had to be dropped off over the road and left to struggle with our cases under the underpass (beneath the train track) and down a tarmac road to the hotel. This is a struggle – especially if you have children in buggies and lots of baggage.
The hotel. Check in was straight forward and we were all ‘tagged’ with purple bands for our all-inclusive privileges. Our room was modern, clean and spacious with a good-sized balcony over the train track. Be warned – no sets of drawers! This made clothes storage a problem – especially if you had a wardrobe with no hangers. However, another party members’ room was on the corner and had no balcony and was cramped but staff were able to juggle and move them down the corridor to another room.
However, whilst we were there, other guests tried to move and found it problematic due to being full. Our room was services everyday but linen was not changed. Mosquitoes are a real problem, both in the rooms and sat out on an evening, so go prepared or look like a plague victim. Another problem with the room is on your key tag is a key soldered on for the electricity.
This needs inserting when you are in the room, however when you leave and lock your door – your electric goes off along with air con and mosquito repellent plug. Unless you find a way to unsolder the key you get a warm room full of mossies. Another electricity associated problem is power cuts. We lost electricity around 25 times during our 7 days (12 times in one night). This is claimed, by staff, to guests plugging in hairdryers or turning TV on.
Food. Very small selection for the three meals and I was getting a bit bored after three/four days. Though the food was warm and edible, just repetitive and due to poor selection a tad boring. The chef must have a cook book entitled ‘150 ways to batter or breadcrumb food’ as what ever meat or veg we had at one meal would turn up battered at the next! However puddings were excellent with a wide range of fruit and blamonge. Also the ever open freezer of tubbed ice cream.
Snacks. Available from pool bar 10am till 12.30pm and then 2.30pm till 6.30pm and was enforced strictly. Hot dogs, pizza (not the nicest I have eaten) and chips were offered plus ice creams. Coffee available 10am till 11.30pm and water from a self serve cooler (no bottles to be filled!!).
Drinks. All inclusive drinks strictly 10am till 11.30pm. In the dinning room a self service system worked.
Elsewhere friendly waiters served you a range of alcoholic beverages and even cocktails – ask for the list, as waiters tend to be a bit possessive of it. All drinks (that is everywhere at all times except the fruit juice at breakfast) is served in small plastic cups. I believe due to previous problems of glasses being smashed and children getting cuts. This did tend to annoy those without kids. Also adults can only get 2 drinks at a time, children 1. Ice is bought in – so no upset tums.
The dining room is too small for the 110 rooms and at busy times you may have to queue up outside for a table.
Staff are very friendly and understand some English but smile at those who attempt Spanish.
Noise is a problem on a night but with doors closed isn’t too much of a problem.
Gardens. Not enough sun beds for guests and no umbrellas for shade. You can not move chairs to sunbathing area - waiters reinforce this. The pool is very small and cramped at busy times – especially if kids go in with lilos. It graduates down a slope quite quickly and after about 7 strides is too deep to stand up so non swimming kids need adult supervision/armbands. Forget trying to swim as unless it is empty, it is just too small. A number of children got ear infections whilst at the hotel so watch out.
There is also a Jacuzzi at the other end of the sunbathing area.
Entertainment. Well I would rate this as the main problem with the hotel. There is an outside courtyard with tables and chairs with three ‘pallet like’ wooden boards that constitute a stage.
A mini disco started around 8.30 for 30mins lead by the ‘entertainer’ a very friendly English girl of around 25 years of age and maybe one or two other hotel employees. After this music was left playing till later in the evening. The ‘entertainer’ then returned to invite guests to the stage to play games. Sometimes the games lasted 10 minutes (the adult balloon popping or the one house bingo that started at 11.10pm ran over last orders).
The only outside entertainment was the parrot show where guests were charged 10 Euros to have a picture with a parrot – rip off. This was the worst entertainment I have ever seen in twenty five years of foreign package holidays.
During the day the ‘entertainer’ provided crayons for children to colour or played ball games on the beach. During one my son found a used condom – so not ideal. It got so bad we took our children to the Monte Playa over the road and my children were given certificates and entertained by professionals there.
Beach. Sharp sand, cooling breezes clear blue sea. However, two sunbeds and an umbrella cost 12 Euros for the day. The current was strong and the beach sloped into the sea very quickly. Beware of jelly fish, plenty about and very painful.
Resort.
Malgrat is clean and has a range of shops and local areas can be accessed by the efficient train network (station is 5 mins walk along front). There are lots of places to visit and activities galore. There are shops which sell goods very reasonable and if you are a smoker, cigarettes are very cheap. The markets sell clothes at very cheap prices – haggling obligatory!
The underpass is a pain – especially on arrival.
Summary. Despite the negativity above, we had a good holiday in a very clean hotel. The food was edible though a bit boring. Met some lovely people - guests were 95% British with the odd few Spanish. Would I return to resort? Probably not due to beach/sea not being child friendly.
Would I return to the same hotel? If the price was as cheap then yes as it is good value for the price paid, I would just be prepared for the dismal entertainment – though on the last night it was a lot better so could it be improving???

Perfect perfect perfect......I can’t fault this hotel at all, situated right on the beach, lovely swimming pool and a very clean hotel.
I went here on honeymoon and I'm so glad I did our week here was perfect in every way, the staff were very friendly and helpful, there was entertainment every night for the children entertained by three woman one was called Amy cant remember the other two’s names but who cares Amy was my favourite anyway. As well as entertainment for the kids adults got to join in with various different things that happened each evening, also during the day the same three woman entertained adults and children alike with various pool and beach activities.....
The food was great, plenty to eat and tasted very good so compliments to the chef. I would recommend anybody to stay at the Amaraigua Hotel and I'm sure you would be as pleased with it as I was.

Jun 2005, Mr D Brandon

Me my wife kids aged 10,6and3 have just come back from this hotel on the 6th June, having just spent a week there. For most part can agree with the previous post on this topic.
We found the place was spotless with the cleaners tirelessly going about their jobs day after day. Our rooms were cleaned every day by the maids. The entertainments staff were a credit, they kept many of the kids happy during the day with various games inc, drawing and also a nightly mini disco, which was popular especially with my two girls. We found most of the hotel staff pleasant and helpful.
The only minus points were the food although welcoming did for most part be very repetitive for e.g. .75% you would have chips salad, pasta, rice with a meat choice at lunch then at dinner you would get the same chips salad, pasta, rice with a fish based meat. I think baked ,mashed or duchess potatoes wouldn’t have gone a miss on the menu. We found it went a bit cool at night which was a surprise because it had been scorching during the day.
Anyway apart from the latter we found the hotel was generally pretty good for most part and anyone coming here esp. with kids will enjoy their stay here.

We have just come back from a one...
8 / 10
Oct 2004, rie

We have just come back from a one week stay at the Amaraigua, and felt obliged to put something on the site to say how much we enjoyed it.
We found the hotel staff to be very friendly and helpful. The maids came in every day and made our beds and we found the rooms were very clean. The pool was cleaned every day, and although it was a little bit smaller than what I had experienced from previous holidays, it was more than efficient for everybody. If you’re more of a beach person, you literally open the gate to get out of the hotel and step on to the sand, the beach is that close. We had an amazing view of the beach and sea from our room.
The hotel was a lot more modern than I had expected it to be, with a pool bar (even though this wasn’t open due it not being high season) and a glass lift that went up the outside of the building, much nicer than the pokey little lifts you get in most European countries!
The food was pretty good too. A variety of different rice and pasta dishes with seafood and meat, although some a little strange, but that’s what you get when you go to a foreign country. There were also plenty of salad dishes and chips.
There wasn’t much entertainment going on in the evenings, due to it being out of season, but we found just as much fun in the attraction park about 10 minutes walk away where you can play games such as pool, table football and air hockey for one euro per game. There were also different things that the kids could try, including an amusement arcade.
I would definitely go back to this hotel again if I had the opportunity, and for anyone considering going, I would definitely recommend it.

We read as many reviews of the hotel...
8 / 10
Sep 2004, Mr C Bennett

We read as many reviews of the hotel as we could before we embarked on this rather cheap holiday deal and some were more confident than others, but once we got there ourselves we were move than pleasantly surprised.
The hotel staff were very helpful and nice. They basically organised our trip to Barcelona. They gave us a train timetable told us about the open top buses and the best times to go.
The food for me and even my fiancée who isn’t fond of red meat was fantastic. I am not a fussy eater maybe helping to this feeling, but I was eating a fry up every morning and a cooked lunch and dinner every day. There were some people that you could hear moaning about the food, but how can they when one day I had my usually fry up, then a steak lunch and pork chop dinner. In my book total result. There was also plenty of fresh fruit and salad everyday. I felt they catered for all taste.
Our room was small, but there were two of us and all we did was wash and sleep in it. So there was plenty of room for that.
They cleaned the hotel like clock work every day 7 days a week. My fiancée and I could not believe what we had got for the money. We was holding our breath and preparing ourselves for the worst so that we could do our best to enjoy it, but there was no need.
The nightlife in Sep is quite quiet and therefore not to much to do, but there are plenty of little shops and stalls that are lovely to look round.
There is a train line literally outside the front door so if you are located at the front of the hotel you my hear that. Except for that very quiet.
Our holiday was lovely we relaxed for most of the holiday and visit a beautiful city (Barcelona) for less money than a MacDonald meal.
I recommend this hotel to anyone who is easy going and just wants to relax. All I will say is just remember if you pay cheap its true to say go expecting cheap yet here you should be pleasantly surprised as I think you got the feeling of 5 star hospitality for the price of 1 star accommodation.

The hotel Amaraigua is an excellent...

Sep 2004, Miss Z Purnell

The hotel Amaraigua is an excellent hotel. We paid very little for our all inclusive holiday and were pleasantly surprised at the standard of the holiday.
The hotel is situated right on the beach front and close to the shops and nightlife, though you weren’t disturbed by noise.
The staff were friendly and incredibly helpful. The manageress in particular went out of her way in order to try to help us go to the Salvador Dali museum, and though we weren’t able to go (as the train journey was complicated and didn’t have our driving licences to hire a car), she stayed past her normal working hours in order to find us something else to do. Barcelona is only an hour away on the train and makes a great day out, especially if u see Gaudi’s Sagrada Famillia (an unfinished cathedral which you can explore)
Yes, there are chips available at every meal, but there were also meat dishes and salads/vegetables. At the price that we paid, we were also able to eat out in other restaurants so we managed to have a variety. At the bar they had all sorts of spirits and made cocktails on request.
The hotel is extremely clean. Like clockwork the staff carry out a cleaning routine each morning on the floors and windows outside, and we noticed that our towels were changed every day.
We had no trouble with our journey to and from the hotel, though some couples did. We spoke to the staff and realised that Fleetway travel subcontract different parts of the holiday which meant that often if things go wrong, the hotel is blamed, though it is actually the fault of Fleetway as they don’t bother to check if the rooms are fully booked etc. They just book people in without checking if there’s enough space.
As a cultured couple we were worried that our holiday would be dominated by lager louts and loud Brits, and though some of the guests were stereotypical, we noticed that as long as you are prepared to explore further into the town or your own day trips, you will have a fantastic time in Malgrat de Mar.

Aug 2004, Mr K Rowe

The holiday was OK, the hotel is in a good position right on the beach, and food is limited, a bit like school dinners. The bar service is very good value.
Our problem was that the hotel maintenance man punched a member of out party, a 14 year old boy, in the face. Yes he was a bit noisy, but not really badly behaved. There was certainly no excuse for this attack. We called the police but unless we wanted to spend the evening at the hospital and then return to Spain for a court case there was nothing they could do. During the same week he slapped another 15 year old in the face. Amazingly the hotel manager did not seem at all concerned and he was still at his job when we left. I would caution anyone with teenage boys about going there.

Jun 2004, Mrs J Williams

Hotel Amaraigua was a great place to take our kids. The rooms were clean, as was the rest of the hotel. The hotel was directly on the beach however, I was a bit disappointed because it was man-made and my daughter couldn’t make any sandcastles!
The staff were very friendly, the food was nice and there was a great selection of drinks including all cocktails etc. My kids (aged 4 & 5) had great fun, as they were free to run around with the girls employed by the hotel to keep all the kids happy. The entertainment was a little disappointing but that may be because the hotel wasn’t that busy as it was just the beginning of the season.
It’s in a great location, 5 minutes by bus to Marineland, which was Fantastic! And although it was close to the nightlife you couldn’t hear it. It had 1 swimming pool, 1 pool by the bar to sit and drink in and an outdoor Jacuzzi! We will definitely go back!!

Jun 2004, Miss M Bedford

Our holiday to Costa Brava this year was brilliant it was a whole new experience as we stayed in a different resort.
The hotel was fabulous and the two girls employed by the hotel were fabulous.
They let the children sit to dinner with them and joined in with various activities.
The hotel was clean and the people that worked there were friendly and helpful.
The food was excellent.
We will visit hotel Amaraigua again.
Parents with children will enjoy it as the girls employed by the hotel are brilliant with children.
I highly recommend this holiday to everyone
