We were originally booked to go to...

Jul 2008, Mrs J Wall

We were originally booked to go to Bon Repos hotel in Calella but when we arrived they told us that they had overbooked our rooms and were going to be "upgraded" to the this hotel. After waiting around for two hours they finally got us our taxi to be transferred across. Our group of six ranging from 14 to 52 found the hotel pleasent and extremely clean, the staff were friendly all except one behind the bar who was clearly happy with his job! The food i think was aimed at the majority of the guests which were German, the two 14 year olds lived on chips, but then for what you pay it is what you expect. There is always the option of eating out. The cleanliness in the dining room was second to none, and the waitresses were very friendly despite the language barrier. The jacuzzi didn't work, the gym had three bikes and a bench without weights that was it. The pool was clean and is a fair size, the water was checked every day for the ph level. Location is fantastic literally on the beach and the shops are just across the road and barter friendly.
Our only moan would be that it was full of German and Dutch who could not speak a word of English and who were damn right rude all of the time, and the entertainment was appauling but hey the drinks were free.
Overall we had a good time in fantastic weather, for the money paid I would go again.

WOW. Recently spent a weeks holiday at this hotel and for the money we paid I can honestly say we had a fantatastic time. On arrival the hotel looked very nice and clean, the receptionist was efficient and spoke very good english. Our room was clean and tidy and although it was four beds in one room it was still reasonably spacious much bigger than the average twin bedded room you would find in a three star hotel. The food was reasonable and there was always a choice of fish and various meats (not just horse meat, this was on once in our weeks stay and as this hotel catered for all europeans not particularly unusual to see). The staff were extremely friendly if you were friendly towards them. Having seen some bad reviews of the hotel I had been a little worried but my worries were unfounded. If you have or are considering booking this hotel I would definitely recommend it as a cheap and cheerful, don't expect four star luxury, you won't get it here, but you will get a good holiday in a nice resort with plenty of shops and bars nearby. A particularly nice place to eat is the Milan cafe (lovely play area for children) you'll find it on the way to Malgrat station, where incidently you can get to Barcelona and other resorts along the coast.

on arrival it looked as though the hotel could do with a little tlc but the receptionist was really nice and very quick booking us in. our room was a family room at the front of the hotel. the room was adequate but could have been a little cleaner in the bathroom, but the beds were spotlessly clean. the restaurant was small and the food on offer was varied but if you are a fussy eater like me it was not very nice so i only tried one meal but my husband had no complaints at all. the pool was nice but the gardens needed tending. there is a bar outside that serves snacks cooked to order that were nice. the location was spot on, just on the beach. there is not a lot of things to do for kids and i would think 10 year olds plus would get very bored. if you go under the bypass and down the road opposite there is a pub called the rovers return that do lovely english food and proper cups of tea for reasonable prices. the train runs directly in front of the hotel and the station is a steady 10 min walk to the right out of the hotel under the bypass into town. a taxi cost us 48euros to girona in the early hours of the morning but it is cheaper in the day. overall a nice quiet hotel that would be lovely spruced up.

Just got back from a fantastic holiday. We stayed for 1 week and were dubious after reading so many bad reviews. Well on arrival we were wlecomed by friendly reception staff. On arrival the room was clean and tidy, with a nice balcony. Our room was cleaned everyday and beds made and clean towels if required. The food was very good, yes there is chips everyday, but there was always a good choice of salads, fresh fruit and lots of variety to choose from. They catered for all nationalities. The staff were all pleasant and cheerful. The bar was excellent any type of drinks available and good range of snacks available in between meals. We thought this hotel was excellent value for money and would visit again.

May 2008, Ms A PATTINSON

i have just returned from a four day stay and can safely say the best part of the holiday was the easyjet flights. on arrival at the airport we had to search for the perla tour guide for about half an hour only to stand there for another two hours waiting for another flight to arrive, which no one got off that was supposed to be on our bus either that, or like us couldnt find the rep. when we got to the hotel its 1.15am we walked through the dodgy underpass which was more like the local loo by that time in the morning and checked in. the hotel claims to have balconys or terraces but we got room 134 which only has a window and as the place was full of german guests that was all they had. the food was not aimed at english at all but the germans seemed to eat it. personally my dog eats better. it was very cold so i got blankets from the wardrobe which had been urinated on by cats they stunk. the sauna was a store room. the entertainment was two speakers outside which were attached to the local radio however on our last night a d.j. turned up and had a deck with yupi yupi written on the front. all in all it was a complete waste of money we ate out everyday at a really good place called the robin hood i am only glad they were there. this hotel if you can call it that needs a complete make over and a visit from food hygiene it was supposed to be my birthday treat as i was forty its one i wont forget i have never been so glad to come home. never again.

2 / 10
May 2008, Mrs J Thomas

My husband booked this hotel as a birthday getaway for myself, & my sister & her husband came with us also. Firstly, we booked the return transfers at £30 each only to be dropped off 2 miles from the hotel & shown which direction to walk to reach this hotel-not exactly the door to door service we expected. It was the same on the return journey.
When we checked in, we noted that the hotel was not as described on the teletext website which we used to make our booking. The rooms we were given were in need of a good paint job, we had a hole in the ceiling, the A/C didn't work & the patio door would not lock. My sisters room was worst, the lock on their patio door was completely broken off, no A/c, no phone & no tv.
We went to reception to complain about the standard of the rooms only to be told that the hotel was fully booked & they wouldn't be able to do any repairs uintil the Monday morning!
On our 2nd night it rained, the whole ground floor & the lounge area was flooded, they had towels & buckets everywhere. This meant that guest had no choice but to go to their rooms. My sisters room was flooded from the room above which meant the pair of them had to wait up throughout the night whilst the hotel manager located a plumber & a carpenter to try & fix their patio door.
We found that the majority of the guests staying at this hotel had the same complaints. The hotel was absolutly freezing at night, so we demanded more blankets.
Sheets didn't fit the beds & some days they weren't made at all.
The Gym was a health hazzard. They had mattresses & bed frames blocking the exit door & the Sauna was used as the store room. The hotel manager thought there was nothing wrong with this & told us that they did not advertise the same facilities as the teletext website!
The food, well they tried to cater for the children with sausages and chips at every meal, as for everyone else, it was guess the dish. One night they put out a pasta dish with a card saying it contained beef & pork & chicken! Now, if you had a special diet due to religious beliefs, it wouldn't go down very well! A lot of the food was luke warm so they put a microwave out on the side for guest to use. Definately needs a visit from the Food & Hygiene people.
Few of the staff made an effort to accommodate the guest. They had 1 hotel entertainer who had to amuse the kids as well as try & organise activities for the adults.
One member of staff told us that the hotel had only opened the day we arrived after being closed for 6 months.
I would have thought that if you had an open day in sight, preparations would have been made to ensure you were ready to receive paying guests. Nothing was cleaned, dirt and cobwebs everywhere, the water machine was filthy, the jaccuzi & the childrens pool was a green colour, no soaps in the bathrooms, we had to ask the cleaner to leave extra toilet rolls, I think she was told to put 1 roll per room!
We found that the hotel catered mainly for Hen & Stag parties, karaoke every night, lots of noise & drunk teenagers sleeping on the beach,
It's the type of hotel you wished the Health Inspector would visit-which they should.
The resort of Malgrat de Mar itself is quite nice, it has a lovely stretch of sandy beach & lots of shops with good bargains. The train station is about 20 minute walk, and you can go into Barcelona for 6euros return. There is also a Sunday market 1 stop after Blanes -2euros, which is also good, & a market in Santa Susanna on Tuesday which is within walking distance.
On the whole, this hotel needs to be closed down & undergo a complete refurbishment. At it's current state, it should be classed as a 2 star hotel. They need to employ & train more staff.
I will visit Malgrat de Mar again, but DEFINATELY NOT this hotel.

Just returned from a week here and...

May 2008, Mr Smith

Just returned from a week here and were pleasantly surprised. We were pretty open minded when booking and for Under £200 pp for all inc weren't expecting the ritz!

The hotel itself is in need of a good lick of paint etc but was immaculately clean. Rooms are cleaned daily with fresh towels. The real bonus is the location as it's literally on the beach so you can make use of the all inc bar whilst on the beach.
The food was ok but nothing special, breakfast was the best meal with cooked/continental etc. Main meals varied a lot although no real main veggie option. Did see some interesting dishes of Horse sausages / Tripe. Always chips and something available for lovers of this. Snacks are available throughout the day and consist of leftover chips/burgers/sausages. All food was buffet style and people seem to become like hoards of lucusts, found the foreign guests don't seem to respect queing like us brits!
The bar was spot on and everything seemed to be inclusive. Estrella beer on offer which was very drinkable and 5.5%. Nothing was watered down as i was expecting. Cocktails, spirits etc very very generous with measures. This aspect couldn't be faulted. In the restaurant you could help yourself to beer, wine, softdrinks on tap. Tea/coffee making facilities all self service.
The pool was not that big and as the hotel is family oriented it can get pretty busy. Didn't seem to be that many day activities about. Supermarkets close-by can be pretty pricey for some things. If you take a walk a mile or two right as you come out the hotel there is a bigger local supermarket which is more reasonable.
Our transfers were arranged for us and used a company called Perla Tours which were a waste of time. Waited 1 1/2 hours after arriving as driver not bothered to make himself known. On return we arrived at airport 45 min before flight due to leave!
I noticed the comments regarding sewage smell posted previously. From my experiences here this seems to be Malgrat de Mar in general and not hotel related.
All in all if you can get a cheap deal here it's well worth a visit. We paid self catering prices for a fully comp week and decided we would eat out if the food was terrible. We only ate out twice and that was just to get out for the eve.

May 2008, Ms A S

Last summer I went on holiday on my own for the first time, all other holidays over seas had been taken with my ex husband.
I let the holiday company pick my reosrt on hotel.
This is the hotel I was given.
I would like to say that it was the best holiday I'd had in 12 years.
The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and helpful to me, always asking how i was and how i was enjoying myself. They took the time of day to be pleasant to me, whether this was because i was staying there on my own or not. But I made friends with another girl who had just split from her partner and left her there was 2 small children and they staff were equally as helpful and friendly to her.
As i was on my own i was expecting a broom cupboard for a room. But I was given a double room with pool and sea view. Not was I was expecting.
The food was really nice and varied. Hence the 12lb weight gain.
I have been on many all inc holidays before in different countries. This was the 1st 3 star one I'd been on where cocktails and bailey's were free. In fact I'd stayed in a 4 star all inc before and not had free bailey's or cocktails.
Every night there was different entertainment laid on which included karokoke, disco, talent night, reptile night and so on. again the last time I'd had this in an all inc hotel was a 4 star on.
The hotel is situated right on the beach and across the road from the shops, so everything is close by.
I think for the price I paid and the treatment I recieved this is an excellent hotel and i would recommend it to others. You get better service and value for money at this 3 star hotel than you do at many 4 star ones.

This was our fourth visit to this...

Nov 2007, Mr E Griffiths

This was our fourth visit to this hotel as it was cheap but cheerful and we are pensioners. Our first three holiday visits were okay as we could access the beach but remain close to the outside bar which was excellent and it gave us easy access to the local bars and shops.
However, we will not be returning again as the hotel has deteriorated in value and service! All the staff seemed short tempered and irritable. The quality of the food has also gone down hill. There is less variety but there were always chips. Some of the types of sausages and processed meats were made with horse meat! The salad bar was inadequate and apart from the lettuce, the rest was 'left-overs' from the previous day's main meal. Waste not want must be there new 'motto'.
We booked as a couple but there were four beds in our room all pushed together without space! We asked for two beds to be removed but they refused to comply! We had to pile one on top of another so we could use two of the beds! It must have been horrible if four people had previously slept in the room. Getting into bed would have required climbing over the first three as they were closely pushed together!
The sewerage stench was awful for the whole of our two weeks. We could never sit on the balcony because of the smell! The source of the smell was the uncovered access lids to the sewerage system. Also the basement gymnasium and showers stank as well and this smell pervaded the reception area. They were used to the smell as when I asked, they said they could not smell anything.
I suspect the reason for the hotel's deterioration is due to the manager leaving in 2006. He maintained a friendly atmosphere and was 'pro British' but I suspect that he had been sacked as when I asked to see him, I was told various stories or no one knew why he was no longer there.
I would not recommend this hotel as it can be described as the worst on the Costa Brava! It was not cheap holiday and we wished that we had not booked it as we had wasted our money at £585.00 each for two weeks.

Oct 2007, Miss J Green

On arrival - we arrived around 7.30pm by coach from the airport (around 1hr journey from Girona), we were two young girls alone, we were told we had to walk under a underpass (rail-way) to get to the hotel - which was scary but there was another couple so we were ok. Into the hotel - extremely friendly reception staff, spoke very good English which was a bonus (because we do not know much Spanish), we were given lots of leaflets (bar, restaurant, entertainment, swimming etc times), plus all inclusive bands and clear information on how to operate things in our room.
The Room - We had a ground floor room, which we were a bit worried about but it was actually brilliant (good access to the pool-side bar and swimming pool, sunbeds etc), our room was cleaned VERY well everyday, with beds made, floor swept, floor washed, towels changed and bathroom cleaned (I was extremely impressed). Television worked well - few english channels such as BBC3, ITV1, CITV, MTV etc, so a good range. (Can access remote for 20Euros (returned on leave) - however, can operate by using buttons on tv). Brilliant SAFE for your belongings, fee 4euros daily or you can pay straight up front which works out less overall, but worthwhile to know your belongings are safe. We had four beds in our room - as there was only two of us it was rather spacious but if you did have more people, this could become slightly over-crowded but a family with small children, absolutely perfect.
Restaurant - Not the best, obviously, all inclusive so they have to cater for all people's tastes, so yes there are some things that are commonly offered such as Chips! However, there was always something new to try. We have to admit that we did eat out a couple of times, only to try something different and see new faces! (Tip - brilliant restaurant across the street with fish tank outside - gorgeous food and good drink measures for the price!)
Bar - cups are plastic and small but you are allowed two at a time and measures are generous, we were never questioned or refused drinks! (Closes at 11.30, but you can sit around till 12pm)
Nightlife - for those of you interested - Waikikii is a wkd bar opposite (has dance floor) sells litre drinks, check out some of the beach side lounges, they look shabby from the outside but some are gorgeous inside (the one opposite Club Tropicana is brilliant). Club Tropicana - 10euros - with two free drinks - you get a club card - can go as many times free (2 extra drinks every time) for 7 days. Club Tropicana - has two dance floors and caters for all music tastes - dance, rock, indie, rnb, hiphop (dj good mixer). There is another disco further on from the strip - apparently is also pretty wkd!
Straight opposite the hotel is a road - walk up it - you will find several bars on your left - they sell bloody good pints, large cocktails, if you still wanna bit of english spirit, legends, robin hood bar - all fun!
Hotel Facilities - swimming pool - fairly deep in places - very clean and of reasonable size, small kids pool and jacuzzi! Pool table, football table. Gym - few limited items, sauna - always worth going in - gorgeous!
Hotel Entertainment - BRILLIANT! You get the usual karaoke and disco, but we also had a reptile show - snakes, lizards etc Parrot show - very interesting and funny, you get to hold all these too if you dare! Singers, bingo etc.. Good entertainment to start the night! Entertainment staff are really friendly too!
The Beach - open the small gate (locked at night) at the back of the hotel - step straight onto the beach (its perfect!!!) Has sunbeds and usual beach activities. Is fine shingle and sea can be difficult to swim in (beach not recommended for the young).
Other things to do - you really are not stuck for choice on what to do here - short distance around 5-10mins depending on pace is the train station where you can go to other parts of the costa and even Barcelona!! (Barcelona takes about 1hr15 - depending on the stops) easily to navigate but make sure you go down the correct underground otherwise it can be a bit confusing!).
There are plenty of cruise boat trips, catamaran trips (including snorkelling, trampoline, all inclusive bbqs and free drinks!). There is a waterworld and zoo (very good priced and thoroughly worth it for children!) .

Directly opposite the hotel (under under-pass) is what is known as the "strip" - has souvenir shops (very good ones!! - not all crappy if you know what I mean) although, they are still the odd people that try to offer you good deals and nag you for your custom! Lots of restaurants, bars with food, supermarkets etc, so you seriously are not away from anything.
If you are off here in September - do pack a thick cardigan as the nights can get a bit chilly as directly by the beach.

Sep 2007, Mr L McLean

I just recently visited the Amaraigua Hotel for a 7 night stay. The pictures look promising and the location ideal - it was anything but!
The rooms are tiny, and the bathroom is smaller than a shower room! The beds are uncomfortable, the cleaners weren't regular (unless requested) and the food was awful!
The only positive thing I can say about the hotel is the location of it, and the reception staff who were excellent all through my stay! The gym consists of 3 cheap exercise bikes, and 2 benches, and with no lighting! It was locked during opening hours and the stench of sewage was stomach churning, as was the same smell around the ground floor of the hotel.
I wouldn't advise eating here at all, especially for vegetarians as the food is very basic and lacks imagination (unless you love chips). As for drinks, the “cocktails” are simply a cordial mixture, diluted with vodka, and the barmen come across quite rude!
Overall from this rant, I can easily say it is NOT a 3* Hotel and I will not return.
