Puerto Vallarta is overrated and polluted. I just came back from Puerto Vallarta. It was my first trip there and I would not go back. No doubt it is a picturesque locale and may have been heavenly thirty years ago; it has become overdeveloped and overexploited by too many... more

Activity Staff
I was lucky enough to stay be at the Las Palmas Resort from April 2002 until the end of June 2002 not on vacation but to work as part of the entertainment staff. For anyone who was there at this time you would know who I was because I was the only Canadian. In my stay there I got to see the hotel for it's true beauty. I worked with a staff that was extremely dedicated to ensuring that you the guests had the time of your life. It was an enjoyable experience that I am hoping I can do again. If anybody was there during that time and remembers me please email I would love to hear from you. chadwillis@hotmail.com
Hell of a time
So for a high school grad trip myself along with 7 other friends stayed at the Las Palmas. At first sight we were a little scared, its not very impressive from the front. We got our room, and again it wasn't that impressive. The pools were pretty good, the beach sucked. All in all just a average kinda place. But what made it fun was the people you go with. All 8 of us had a blast. The people you meet there are also make the trip, we met people from all over the world. The entertainmnet crew are great, and the bar and bartenders are great. Everynight a different club is featured with free cab ride to the bar and no cover charge. The entertainmnet crew always comes with you and makes sure everything goes smoothly. Theres many clubs in Puerto, some reccomendations are: Halo (descent, smaller, but packed), Collage(huge, packed, good foam party), Christines(nice, cool effects, dont wear swimwear, dress up a little), Carlos Obrians(great times, smaller, more locals). Christines has a cover charge of like 30 bucks canadian, but is open bar, make sure to bring tipping money though. All in all a great time, and if your young, and your on a budget this is a good place to go. For next time I would stay at a 4 star and in Cancun cause the clubs there are even better.
It's MEXICO!
I had a great time at las palmas. I agree that the night life could use some help but do you go for the show they put on? I went for a vacation, and that's what I got. The room may have smelled musty, but it's very humid there.I'm from Vancouver and I could smell that there as well. The food was good, the staff were great, the setting was wonderful. I expect to lay by a pool and get pleasantly relaxed, do some tours, see some sights and meet friendly people. That all happened. Who cares about the evening entertainment or musty smells etc. THAT'S MEXICO MAN! Can't wait to go back!!!
Staff were brilliant
Having just got back from Mexico a week ago I thought I'd write a review on the Las Palmas. Generally it is a nice hotel but the room we were in smelt really musty and damp, especially in the wardrobe, otherwise it was kept very clean. Sometimes you wouldn't get your full quota of towels though. The food was okay - nothing to rave about although the A La Carte Restaurant was nice. The nightly entertainment is mostly a load of rubbish - there were 4 good nights - Mexican night, a Mexican Indian night and a mime artist (who was on twice) which over 2 weeks isn't enough - the rest of the time the entertainment seemed to consist of one of the entertainment staff trying to drag people on the stage to play stupid games. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The quiet pool was nice until one of the entertainment staff decided to play loud banging music on the beach - supposedly to encourage people to play volley ball - unfortunately the beach is right next to the quiet pool. They didn't seem to have a concept of people just wanting to relax! It speaks volumes that most people wanted to lie round the quiet pool instead of the lively pool which was just too noisy at times.
Small is good
The hotel and all its staff were superb. The place was kept beautifully clean and the food for a 3 star resort was excellent. The only down side was the evening entertainment which was poor except for two nights. A good mix of British. Canadian and Dutch residents. Only $3 taxi fare to the downtown area. A good two weeks vacation
very charming, but food was terrible
hotel is quite charming. We were concerned with staying in a 3 star hotel in Mexico, but were pleasantly surprised. Staff was freindly, grounds and rooms clean. Lots of artwork, a beautiful entry and lobby, Tikki lights on at night. They have a large pool, with very loud music, and a quiet pool across the courtyard (for adults only) where you could barely hear the music at all. Lots of British and Mexican tourists. Very few American tourists. The beach is very small and narrow, however the beach gets larger about 100 yards north of the hotel. The food was horrible. Buffet only, with not much choice. Drinks were also terrible. You could get a good drink but had to pay for it at the cash bar. The all-inclusive bar drinks were awful.
on second thought!
Our lst. trip to Mexico was at the LasPalmas in Sept. l997, and we thought it was a lovely place at the time ,Rated at 3 and l/2 Stars, we enjoyed meeting lots of people from England and mixed in with them. We even went on the Booze Cruise, and though we had a very good time in the 7days, even allowing for the drunk in the room next door, bringing in a party at 3A.M. After phoneing the desk, they did send up the Guards and made him leave the next night, when he did the same thing. Our trip to Nuevo Vallarta in Oct. 200l, started in the Vancouver Airport, talking to a Young couple on their honeymoon. They said they were going to the Las Palmas and we told them it was nice, in the golden zone, nice Beach, but a smell from the rear of the property was very Noticeable. We told them we now go only for 2weeks and were going to the Club Viva Vallarta - 5 Star, out of Town a good l/2 hour, but we wanted to try Nuevo (New) Vallarta. Two days later, relaxing at our 1.st. Class Pool, up comes 2 young couples and stand in front of me , saying "remember us?? at the Air Port, We just left the LasPalmas, and came to find you, We transfered and It cost us $big time, but we couldn't stand the Dump any longer". They brought along the other Honeymoon couple . They said they maybe could stand l week ,but not 2weeks and it being their Honeymoon. The food in the only restaurant was awful. The nightly entertainment is awful, No Shows, and No snack bar any more. They had bugs and not just little things, and mold growing. So all 4 were truly unhappy and glad to move. The next day We took the bus in to See if we could get a look at the LasPalmas. We were allowed to walk through the lobby to beach, after we said we had stayed with them before. What a dissapointment !! What a dump!! Don't stay there!!The Beach isn't worth it ! Sewage runs next door-into the water and you can smell it!!
Friendly atmosphere
April 7- 14 2003. Very friendly, excellent staff and good Mexican atmosphere. My husband and I have traveled to Mexico many times, but this was our 1st experience on the Pacific side. The town is still recovering from the hurricane last year and even though our hotel reconstruction was not complete, it didn't interfere with our stay, they were very discreet.
Loved Las Palmas
This is moreso an enquiry than a review as words escape me when I try to tell anyone of this wonderful resort. I stayed there for a glorious week in Feb. 2002 and fully intended to return in the same time period this year., 2003. However, when I began to think about reserving a room, I was told by my travel agent that the resort was almost totalled by a very rare Pacific hurricane in the Fall of 2002.Can anyone who has stayed on the PV resort strip shed any light on what stage the renovations are, if any, at this resort since the hurricane towards possibly re-opening for the 2004 Season.I am very interested and would be most thankful.I am Jim and I am at Doverlite@Sympatico.caThanks
Stay here if you only want shelter and free drinks....
A girl friend and I stayed here April 2002. This was my first time out of the country I was a little nervous but with all the great reviews I knew this place would be terrific. I WAS WRONG! We arrived to very pleasant door greeters. When we checked in at first the could not find our reservations. We finally got our room, on the second floor. When we went inside it had a horrible musty smell but was clean. The balcony faced the ocean.....and the neighbors balcony. After a few days I realized he was looking more into our room then the ocean!! The beds were hard as a rock. I ended up folding over my bedspread and sleeping on that. The bathroom had wood slats for a vent that moved every time you opened the door. Also the ceiling tiles shifted with the winds. The TV was a joke.... lots of static and very few choices. While we melted in the heat our air conditioner did nothing. Also our room was in the corner of the property. So when the "activity director" would start the rap and techo music at 9:30-10 am the sound would travel up and echo into our room. We kept complaining about the noise but nothing was done. We noticed there was a newer wing that had better rooms the night before we were to leave. My advice is request that area and maybe you will have a more comfortable time. Our maid was very nice and did a great job. I was never worried about creepy crawlies running around at night. The food was ok....great pinapple juice but so so on everything else. Also I went to Mexico for Mexican food not italian which was popular most evenings we were there. We found better places to eat all over town and ended up eating out half of the time. The view was great. Sunsets beautiful. We were able to walk around to little shops. Take the bus to downtown much cheaper then the taxis. My cousin stayed at the Villas Vallarta in the Marina. TOTALLY AWESOME! We hung out there quite a bit. Better service, better rooms, better pool. Also beware of the free trips and dinners. MAJOR PUSHY timeshare people who are ready to take advantage of you at any monent! There are many beautiful places to stay in PV. I would definately go back but not stay here.
