Puerto Vallarta is overrated and polluted.
I just came back from Puerto Vallarta. It was my first trip there and I would not go back. No doubt it is a picturesque locale and may have been heavenly thirty years ago; it has become overdeveloped and overexploited by too many people.
First of all, the water: most of the beaches are polluted with a yellow-brown scum floating along the water by the beach - run off from the massive hotel sewage treatment plants.
Second of all, the beaches: I found the beaches to be cramped and small. I like walking the beach but in PV, you can only walk 10 minutes before coming to an obstruction of some kind - rocks, piers etc. The beaches are very crowded with jet skis, too many people and hotels crammed together.
Third: I happened to be there during spring break and was subjected to over a hundred screaming, drunken college students, shouting and swearing at the top of their lungs, slamming doors day and night, loud conversations at 4 a.m., constant thumping rap music from the rooms, the bar, the pool.
This was at Las Palmas Resort which was supposed to be fairly upscale. I complained to the hotel clerk, but they just shrugged their shoulders. They get too much money from these College students so don't want to stand up to them.
Anyway, the weather was great, the food was OK, but that was about it.
I would not recommend Las Palmas or PV in general. I found Mazatlan or Los Cabos better.
