We stayed here for 1 week in August. The rental cost of the property was relatively low, there is a reason for this! The property (there are more) is situated in the centre of a beautiful peice of countryside a few miles from the well resourced town of Callington. Deer Park Farm is a large working farm with lovely rural walks and views.
The cottages are however dated and lack care and attention. The cottage we staying is was probably the better of the 2 we were shown around. It had a faint musty smell,, I assume due to lack of use and all the rooms were dusty in parts. I must say the living spaces were slightly cleaner!
The bathroom was adequate with a bath and over bath shower attachment, which drizzled water enough to wash hair!
The kitchen facilities were basic, but they all worked. THe kitchen itself was small, enough space for 1 adult to stand in it therefore workspace was limited. It was equipped with a microwave, fridge with freezer box, cooker & kettle. The cottage we stayed in slept 5, but the kitchen was supplied with only 3 saucepans, 2 small, 1 large. Had we have been 5 adults, it would have been difficult to cook adequate quantities using there resources!
The bedrooms were large, and there were ample space in each for the beds. The master bedroom housed a double and single whilst the 2nd room housed 2 single beds. Plenty of room in the master bed for addition of a cot if required. The double bed was tired and had past its use, but the single beds were just fine, we ended up abandoning the double in favour of the singles. The pillows supplied were also old but adequate for a weeks stay. The duvets supplied were also adequate and blankets were provided for extra warmth if needed.
We met 1 of the farm owners and he was lovely, very friendly.
After the holiday however we recieved a accusational letter complaining that we had lied about the state of the bed. This has left a very untrustworthy taste to the whole holiday experience.
If you are after a bargain holiday and happy to eat out most days, this is the perfect place!

Callington is a small town just...

Callington is a small town just inside the border of Devon and Cornwall. Although its not what we would call a quaint Cornish village in the traditional sense it is a great base for a holiday being close to Dartmoor and Plymouth as well as Cornwall with Tintagel Lands end Eden Project etc only a short drive away.
What struck us firstly about the town itself was the number of takeaways and hairdressers. We sampled an amazing Indian a tasty chinese a hearty mix from the Mexican (?) and the best fish and chips ever in the town square. We visited two hairdressers during our stay and both were great.. we recommended the one next to the bakery by the church..
The bakerys were great with Cornish Pasties aplenty (of course) which we were advised were much better than the mass produced ones from Ginster on the outskirts of the town.
The locals were amazing. Very friendly, the veggie shop staff were always great and had the best veggies. The girls in the Co op were friendly the chemist was most helpful.
Our accomodation was on the outskirts of the village and run by a very friendly couple who had been in the business of toursim for a few years. The cottage was cosy and comfortable although we would have prefered duvets to blankets on the beds and perhaps the cottages would benefit from updating in the near future. The public phone wasnt working which was a bit of a pain being miles from anywhere and not able to get a signal but the views and countryside made up for this with badgers and rabbits and foxes spotted from our cottage window.
From a grownups point of view the accomodation could have been a little more up to date but it was all very clean (if a little dusty). The kids absolutely loved this place and the freedom and animals and the friendly farmer who made us so welcome.
We explored nearby Calstock and Cothele House and visited the town of Tavistock which has amazing mock gothic buildings. We went onto the moor and saw the famous Dartmoor Prison and onto Plymouth(stop at the Burrator for lunch with a childrens playground) where we took a Guide Friday open top bus tour of the City which was fantastic and good value for money. The Aquarium was great (great pub next door for a meal with the kids). We went to Morewellham Quay which is a living museum and a great day out (have supper at the Harvest Home on the road to Tavistock or go there on a Sunday they have a great childrens garden and lovely food).
On quiet days we just nipped down to Callington (or Cally as the locals call it) and sat up at Kit Hill and enjoyed the view with a pastie).
All in all a good place for a break.
