My husband and I have been to Cozumel many times but this was the first time we stayed at Casa Mexicana. I have to say we were very pleasantly surprised. We normally stay at another boutique hotel, but this will be our spot from now on. Anyone who has been to Coz knows... more

not overrated
I just read the previous review dated 08/30/04. I stayed at Casa Mexicana 5 nights and found my experience to be completely opposite. The staff was very helpful. The breakfast was good...the coffee great. I even noticed that there were very few flies. I found the hotel to be a haven in the sometimes hustle-bustle of Cozumel. Maybe it is overpriced for a non-inclusive but I enjoyed venturing out to the restaurants in the plaza. When I ordered food from room service, it came very fast from one of the best restaurants in town. Overall, I loved the place.
Overrated
I stayed at Casa Mexicana only one night. I thought it was overpriced for $110/night. The water is across the street, but no beach. The food was average for breakfast. Flies were feasting on the baked rolls. Juices were good, but coffee not good. Room was clean but water pressure poor in shower. We didn't mind the hard bed. The front desk wasn't all that helpful at answering questions.
Veteran Mexico traveler LOVES this place!
Different people want different things. That is important to remember when reading these reviews. Some people want to check into an all inclusive "resort" and not leave the resort again until heading back to the airport. If that is what you want, you do not want to consider Casa Mexicana. Other people are like me, and want to enjoy everything an area has to offer when I travel there. I want to eat at different local places instead of eating the same all inclusive buffet 3 times a day for a week. I want to drive my Jeep to explore the other side of the island. If that is you also, then you will LOVE Casa Mexicana. Since I don't want the "all inclusive" stuff, why pay for it? This is NOT a rat hole hotel. It is one of the newer places to stay in Cozumel and is VERY well maintained. The room was perfectly spotless (as was the whole hotel). Water is purified, so you are safe. Staff was very genuine and kind. We tipped our maid $5 the second day, and she made giant swans out of the towels for the rest of our stay! The free breakfast each day was better than I've had at any other Mexican hotels, but not fantastic. Bed was typically very hard (like every other Mexican hotel I've stayed at!). There is a large free parking lot right next door for your rental Jeep! The pool is part of the lobby and is very small like a wading pool. It overlooks the ocean. The entire hotel is VERY BEAUTIFUL and ARTSY. Goto their web site for a bunch of photos which are dead on accurate. You are located in the downtown area on the waterfront, so you can walk anywhere. Subway and McDonalds (shame on you!) are close by if you must eat such boring things. Places you MUST eat at are Pancho's Backyard at the Cruise Pier (for the view) or downtown (for seeing the beautiful old building) to enjoy the best Guacomole and Margarita's in town. Also Prima's for Italian and Pepe's Grill (expensive). The view from the room is incredible if you get ocean view. So, in summary, THIS IS NOT A BIG RESORT. There are no "kids activities". You do not walk out your room and onto the beach in the morning so a cabana boy can bring you a drink. No "pool games". What Casa Mexicana is, is a beautiful, clean, SAFE, *hotel* with a perfect location. Get out there and enjoy the island of Cozumel!
Loved it - frequent cozumel traveleler from TX
Great hotel, great location, breakfast was wonderful!!
Great alternative
My husband and two kids (12yrs and 9 yrs) stayed at Casa Mexicana July 22-26. The hotel was very clean and the food was good. It is important to keep in mind that this is a hotel- not a resort. This hotel offered everything that we expected. We paid extra to have the ocean view - it was worth it. The view from our room was beautiful and the people watching was fun. If you don't get the ocean view room - you can still hangout in the lobby/bar area, which has a patio/deck with the same view. The breakfast buffet is very good. The lunch and dinner must be ordered (like room service) but they will bring it to you any place you want to eat. The hotel is open air -except for the rooms -the ocean breeze keeps the hotel comfortable. The air conditioner in our room worked very well. We found that when we made the effort to be friendly to the staff - they were very friendly - otherwise, they stayed to themselves. We found a lot of fun things to do in town (shopping, eating, partying). The pool is small and although some people go across the street to swim in the ocean - there is not much beach and it looks rocky. Instead, on two different days we took a cab to ($15) some wonderful beaches (we visited Paradise Beach and Mr Sancho's Beach). We have stayed at all inclusive resorts before, but we found this to be a great alternative.
HORRIBLE! IT WAS BELOW TERRIBLE!
This was an beyond horrible vacation!! i dont kno what all the other people are talking about in their reveiws! It was the worst vacation ever! Other then staying at this resort me and my family also stayed at the crown paradise club all enclusive resort in cancun and it was triple the better! if your looking to go on a vacation its best to go to CPC! At the resort the food was horrible the rooms were horrible the service was horrible the besch was dirty, it was not kept clean, the rooms were not ready to be checked in by 4:00! I would never recommend this place to anyone! and also the kids actiavitys were bad, the kids did not enjoy it. WORST VACATION EVER! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful
We Stayed at Casa Mexicana----April 24 through May 1. It was Wonderful! Great Ocean view from our room and our own private patio ---- Decor of the room was very well done. Our room was large and very clean with wonderful a bathroom which had a full-size bathtub with shower. Our bed was very comfortable as they put a pad on top. TV with 1/3 or more channels of English-some with Spanish subtitles. Very attentive staff. Fernanda and Romy were wonderful during our correspondence and our stay. Very tasty breakfast buffet with great food: eggs or omelets made to order, bacon, sausage, potatoes, Mexican entrées, sweet rolls, croissants, fresh fruits, fresh juices, milk, coffee, tea cereals, and yogurt. We only needed a little snack during the mid-day and we ate out during our evening meal. The pool about 4 feet deep as on the same floor as reservations with pool furniture and a bar to the side--from pool your view overlooked the ocean. The escalator and elevator was a welcome site after a day of diving or after walking around town. We were close to many great restaurants, shopping, downtown and the ocean with no need for a car or taxi as we walked. The ocean is across the street--small sandy area next to the sea wall with many children and parents swimming in the ocean having fun. We can not wait for our next trip to Cozumel to stay at Casa Mexicana and to scuba dive the on the wonderful reefs.
PERFECT!
My boyfriend and I just spent a week at Casa Mexicana, April 23- 30 '04, and we cannot imagine our trip would have been as memorable if we had stayed elsewhere. The rooms were large and nicely decorated. Yes the matresses are hard as hell but that is the same all over Mexico. The private balconies are big and a great place to watch sunsets. We have been to Cozumel 4 times in the past 8 months and cant wait to get back to Casa Mexicana. It is right across from the water, the view from the little pool and patio bar actually looks like you are on the water unless you lean over the side of the building to see the street below. The staff are all so sweet and helpful. Breakfast is included and is American and EDIBLE! That is odd for Mexican hotel food. The omletts are custom made and really good. The main square area for shopping is an easy 3 block stroll. The hotel is very safe, clean, and just a great place to stay. I know I am rambling but just cant recomend this hotel enough!
Amazing!
Stayed at the Casa in February, 2004. We had an oceanview room, it was outstanding! The hotel is beautiful, clean, contemporary! They have a free breakfast buffet that is wonderful. The staff was very helpful but speak little english so be prepared. Our room was spotless, nicely decorated, cleaned daily, great view despite the constant cruise ships. You will NOT regret your stay here, I would recommend this hotel to everyone!
A great in-town hotel
I stayed at the Casa Mexicana in April 2002 along with my three daughters and two of their friends. The rooms were clean, the service excellent and the staff friendly. It was nice to be able to walk to all the shops and restaurants and not need to take taxis or drive anywhere. The one thing the hotel lacks, of course, is a waterfront and a beach scene. For that reason on my next trip to Cozumel I am planning on staying at one of the all-inclusives. But if beach time and snorkelling are not a high priority, the CM is a great value. The breakfast every morning is FANTASTIC!
