Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres Hotel

My girlfriend and I planned our trip to Cancun with a strict budget in mind and the Avalon Reef was probably the best deal out there. We were looking simply for a quiet place to unwind and Isla Mujeres was perfect. Isla Mujeres is very charming and lacks the commerization that Cancun has become. Great thanks to all of Avalon's management and staff for a perfect wedding (on a popular date where they serviced 3 brides)! Avalon made it easy to have both civil & religious ceremonies to make our wedding official by the State & the Catholic Church (which is not easy to figure out if you are an American). Every detail was taken care of from transportation around the Island to the best service at our reception dinner! The hotel had great service, food was o.k. but for as cheap as it is in town - I would eat in town. You do not get maid service unless you hang your "pls clean my room" flyer on the outside of your door. View from room is awesome - great beach. Not much snorkling at the hotel. Spend $20 and take the boat out to the reef - very clear - lots of fish.

We thought we had found a heavenly place, but upon our departure I found that my luggage was lighter than when we arrived. Of all things, I had make-up and a blouse taken from the luggage in our locked room. It happened on our last night there while we were at dinner..downstairs! That is now the memory I have of the Avalon Reef Club. Use caution when you travel.

I recently returned from 2 weeks in Cancun, where I spent the 2nd week at The Avalon Reef. I can only echo most of the previous reviews. The location is lovely and the town nice and friendly but the resort is only average. Food poor to average - maid service came at 5pm or not at all (I think she waited in the corridor until I had got to my room and then came). Beach towel changing service happened only once. The Avalon had the worst service of any hotel!!! The view is amazing and the island of Isla Mujeres is wonderful. The island is safe and most places are within walking distance. If you wish, golf carts are readily available to cruise the island and see all of the sites like the turtle farm and the southern point. I would readily go back to the island, but next time, I will purchase airfare, catch a cab from the airport to Puerto Juarez $10.00, take the public ferry to Isla Mujeres $3.50 (may be a little too local for some, if so, there... more

We were warned by earlier reviews that the day boat people were a problem but we never thought it would be so hideously uncomfortable. They start arriving about 9:30am in 4-6 boats(couple hundred people)and don't leave until the 5pm or 7pm boat. The steal your hotel beach towels from your lounge chairs and if you get up for lunch or a swim,your books and towels will be removed and they take your lounge chairs. We stayed at the Avalon Reef Club (which was definitly one of THE nicest hotels on the Island) from Dec 17 - 31, 2003 and had a fun vacation, but there are a few things I would like to comment on. My husband, son and I had reserved a room in one of the villa's (not within the tower) for our stay. We arrived at 7pm and were given a room with 2 single beds. We just returned from our trip. When we arrived at the Cancun airport, we did not have transportation like we were suppose to. Talked to an Avalon rep. and still no luck. Had to take a shuttle to the ferry and pay for all. When we arrived at the reef, we told them of the problem and were advised to get with our agent. Then we were told that the steak house resturant was not part of the all inclusive (which we could not book otherwise). I had looked on the web page and it never stated otherwise.
