I must start by saying that Tignes is a beautiful place with great snow, amenities and great ski instructors. However, the hotel was disgraceful! I was appauled by the electric wires hanging out from plugs in rooms, the dirty, tired walls, stained floor and general lack of... more

The holiday overall was good although we felt let down by the hotel staff at the Le Curling. The hotel is run by English season Aires (students) and they aren't trained in customer service and at times were quite rude and uninterested. The food at the hotel was excellent... more

Pleasant suprise
Having read the reviews about the noise, we were expecting a challenge. Then Crystal cancelled our flight to Chamberry 6 weeks out and switched us to Lyon for the half term holiday week (with no compensation and a 6 hour journey) so our expectations were pretty low. However, from that point things started to turn.... The Hotel is located a few yards from the main ski school gathering point so you could not get better. The food was excellent - we were suprised at the effort that had been made to produce quality dishes. One day they even gave an option of kangaroo, which caused a great deal of debate, particularly amoungst the children ! I had expected the noise to come from within the Hotel or even next door, but discovered the potential problem was a disco across the street, and this consisted of the odd shout (in French) at throwing out time 4AM. We had a room on the 5th floor & it was fine. The staff at the Hotel were great - friendly & helpful and relaxed about everything. Apart from Crystals switching airports (and we discovered other travellers had used Chamberry the day we arrived) we have no complaints and thoroughly enjoyed our holidays. Perhaps there is something to be said about managing expectations !
ideal location, but earplugs essential!
Visited this hotel in tignes in 24-jan - 2nd Feb 2008. ideally located, only a few mins walk to several lifts, also close to many resturants, shops and bars. This is a 3* hotel (don't book 3* and expect 5*!) so therefore it is basic and rather tired , however it is comfortable, the food good and plentifull, staff helpful and friendly. There are baths in the ensuites to soak aching muscles, and some rooms have lovely views and balconys. However the neigbouring bars and clubs do mean that there was considerable noise going on outside until 4am each night! Therefore we would say, earplugs are absolutly essential if you want any chance of undisturbed sleep. I would definalty return (with earplugs), as location excellent.
Cheap and cheerful
This hotel was a lot better than I expected after reading the reviews. Early season, so running with only 6 staff. Good food, a choice for dinner made during breakfast. A cheerful young helpful staff, loads of (rough) wine with dinner.Bedrooms spacious but tired, with a modern refurbished bathroom.Great location, your experience will depend on price and the staff for the season.
The real review
I have just been to Crystals Club Curling Hotel in Tignes, before I went I read the reviews on this page and it concerned me greatly. Now on my return back to the UK I must say that this was the most fantastic holiday I could of imagined and the other reviews were rubbish and well incorect. The hotel was very nice and the location couldnt have been better just right if you dont like walking to the slopes. The staff were so friendly and helpfull they would bend over backwards to help you. The food was incredible and even the unusual dishes on the menu I was still pleasantly suprised about. The atmosphere in the resort was just right to suit any age range and theres hardly any noise if anyone needs the early night sleep witch i quite often did. I could keep going but all in all this is the place to go if you want the perfect holiday and Crystal sorts out as much or as little as you need them to. Would i go back again? Next year for sure! Thank You, Tom Rose
Little to recommend
The hotel Curling is not an hotel at all. Sure, it says Hotel in big letters on the outside and is described as such in the publicity, but it is not. If it were, it would have professional staff etc. It is in fact a very large "chalet". Perhaps this is what they mean by the "club" prefix in the brochure. When staying in a chalet, we are expecting a very informal atmosphere. The boys and girls who work there are more like mates, and it`s fun to socialise with them. The Curling is worn out, tatty and in desperate need of a major refurb. Light fittings are hanging off the walls, nails are sticking up on balconies, paintwork is peeling, crockery is chipped and cracked, carpets are filthy. And worst of all, there is no hot water at busy times. And because the place is run by "our mates", we`re not supposed to complain. I think that the higher management are taking advantage of their amateur staff, and their customers by using this "chalet" ethos as an excuse to delay spending the much needed investment. Curling is in a great location and an international resort. It could be top class, but is instead, dreadful. Shame on you Crystal Holidays.
when its good its very good, when its bad its worse!!
stayed at the curling late feb 07. the good - 1. food, way impressive!!, took me my surprise how good it was!! the chef really is wasted working there! 2. staff, Very freindly, nothing was a problem, especially matt, amy, mario, niall. 3. location (ski to door almost). 4. hotel interior nice and clean, albeit a bit dated and tatty, never in this word up too 4* but never the less ok. lacked any savoie charm. the bad - 1. although i said the staff where v helpful, they where not much good at getting our table orders right. 2. location, good if your 16 to 30. bad if you have kids who need rest. the curling is directly over the crowded house bar so the whole hotel pounds to what ever the bar dj is playing! 3. like i mentioned earlier - this hotel is NOT a 4*. crystal or thomson should really not market any thing other than 2/3*. all in all, the hotel was v good at times and v bad others. would i go back? no! good luck. d
Avoid the Curling unless you don't mind loud music until 1am
Stayed here with Crystal for a weeks skiing in march 06. What killed it for us was the ddisturbance from the crowded house bar on the floor below. Even those on upper floors in the hotel were kept awake past 1am by the music and live bands playing. What annoyed me was that Crystal own the bar and are not targeting a young crowd for the hotel. The average guest in the Curling was probably about 40, many with young kids and the bar below stands to canibalise their hotel business. The 2 just don't go together unless the hotel starts to attact early 20's singles. Otherwise its a basic hotel with basic quality rooms, crampted dining room and an odd bar on different levels. The thing that should make all this fine is the location , right by the lifts and slopes. Unfortunately when we were there the other probblem was the staff attitude - they gave us the impression that the guests were an inconvenience that got in the way of the fun. We complained and to give them their due the service did improve by mid week. This is my 3rd ski holiday with Crystal in 15 years and they have all had their significant problems, such that I have now finally leant my lesson. No more Crystal holidays. They obviously do not invest in their operations and are prepared to let adjoining businesses conflict with each other for short term revenue.
Fantastic Food
Just been on a Crystal Ski holiday to Tignes in France. Stayed in the Club Curling hotel in Val Claret resort. Hotel a bit on the tired side but majority of the staff very friendly and helpful. What really stood out was the quality of the food. The evening meal was simply fantastic. Aparently they have got a new Scottish chef working in the hotel who is very shy but makes the most amazing meals.
generally ok but not great service
We booked a weeks holiday skiing in Tignes through Crystal holidys. It wasn't the cheapest hotel in Tignes but we wanted a centrally based hotel close to the slopes (ski to the door)with meals included. The food is good and the evening meals were all great with a 3 course meal and unlimited house wine free of charge.Afternoon tea and cake was served buffet style between 4-5pm which was a nice touch after a day on the slopes. Meals are served at very strict times, if you're 15 minutes late for dinner they will not serve you starters! Breakfast is served up until 9am but if you arrive after 8.45am then they will refuse you a cooked breakfast but cold food is available until 9am. Good local resturants and foodshops around if you fancy a change to hotel food or strict meal times (8pm) Rooms are clean and tidy and quite basic for a 4 star but as it's an activity hotel we expected it to be a bit hard wearing with taty carpets (ski boot wear and tear). Hotel Barman was friendly and served all kinds of cocktails and beers, small hotel bar which was nice and friendly. We stayed on the 2nd floor and on the 2nd night complained about the street noise. There is a busy locals bar (crowded house)on the basement floor and a nightclub opposite. Although the music wasn't a problem the kicking out times did mean that drunk partygoers would scream and shout from midnight until 3am. We bought earplugs from the local chemist and weren't really bothered about the noise after that. Service - well were to begin although some staff were very friendly others we not quite so helpful or experienced when it came to delivering service. All staff are english seasonaires and are generally in their early twenties or fresh out of college. Other holiday makers on our table complianed about the staff as they seemed to have been airlifted straight out of 'brat camp. One couple commented that' we seem to be interupting their private holiday' that was a fair statement on their attitude. Overall a good holiday but the staff were stroppy english teenagers. Wouldn't stay their again but would opt for self catering apt slightly out of the main square for a quieter nights sleep or a french run hotel.
Holiday in the alps with a kidney dialysis machine!
I am a kidney dialysis patient and use a portable dialysis machine. I have just returned from one week's stay at the Hotel Curling, Tignes, France with my husband. I would recommend the Hotal Curling to anyone. The staff were excellend, nothing was too much trouble. They will assist anyone with medical needs. The price of the holiday was excellent value for money. We had breakfast, packed lunches, and three course evening meals with wine every day. With the holiday were two walking excursions thrown in. Tignes is beautiful. There are every sports imaginable on offer. You can also just relax and sun bathe by the lake. This was an excellent holiday and one that I would recommend to anyone. It was booked with Crystal Holiday, Lakes and mountains brochure. Highly recommende and most memorable in every way.
