Like many we spoke to we were very apprehensive after reading the bad reviews. All I can say is that we paid £390 each for all inclusive for one week in a 3* hotel and did not expect 5* luxury for that price. The room was clean enough, and the pool was clean, although I... more

Great holiday, shame about the food
We ad a great holiday at the Gran Ppaya despite the poor food, We were in the Fiesta Beach annexe which we liked as our patio doors opened up onto the pool. This was great for our two girls. the families round trhe pool were very nice and everyone got on great. we ended up eating out most nights, The cafe Del Mar round the corner is very good and worth trying out. In the hotel the two entertainers, Sandt and Areneraud worked very hard and again our girls loved the dancing. The hotel ploicy of plastic beakers and only two drinks at a time was petty and silly. The resort itself is fine if a little limited. We tried the horse riding at Rancho sa Coma but walked away in disgust at the way the horses and ponies were treated. They were tied up in the sun with no shade or access to water, We also saw they being kicked and punched and hit with the wooden end of a rake. Avoid this place at all costs, its dangerous and would not be allowed to operate in the UK.
beware, stay away
Booked for 10 days at the gran playa with with my husband and two children aged 8 and 10. On arrrival early hours of the morning offered some meet and cheese whcih had obviously been left out and taken to fiesta appts. Complained following day as booked hotel and did a room in the main hotel which is next to kitchen extractor fans. Rooms basic but clean. The food was awfull, very limited choice and same sort of stuff each day- only 1 meat dish, 1 pasta and i fish and always cols when we got it. The pooli is unsafe and very slippy on entering no good for kids. Outdoor pool toilets stink and the indoor toilets cleaned during the day but left in a mess at night when cleaners gone. Entaertainment- what entertainment appart from bits really for kids- no shows etc. There are no gardens and the terrace by pool is left in a mess throuougt the day. Saw bar staff filling bottles of water from the tap and this was meant to be mineral water. the wine id from the cheap supermarket cartons. Drinks are served in small plastic cups- limited to one drink per person. Same food for breakfast no fresh jiuce all out of a machine and the same for the coffee. I f you want fresh coffee you have to pay for it. Not worh 3 stars and give all inclusive a bad name. Worst hotel i have ever visited. Do not go this is a bad hotel and a waste of money.
Fact not Fiction - again
Just got back from Gran Playa Sa Coma yesterday, and we all had a great time. The resort is multifaceted; a mile long beach with a retail and restaurant strip set back one block from a wide promenade; or travel half a mile down the coast to S’illot and enjoy the ‘restaurant overlooking a small cove style beach’ experience. We were pleasantly surprised that the apartments were two room set-ups and not studio aparts as we'd expected. (e.g. There’s a separate bedroom off a lounge/diner). They are also bigger than we expected given some reviews. The battered old fridge even worked properly which is more than can be said for the efforts in some major UK Hotel brands I could mention. The rooms are basic and a bit of TLC wouldn’t go amiss, but as we only used the balcony for a pre dinner bottle of cava brut (2 quid from local Spar), and the beds to crash in (everybody was asleep before hitting the pillows) we didn't care. We consider we got what we expected for what we paid for the hotel. Daily, we trashed the towels with factor 20 Reimann Sun Block, but they were cheerfully replaced on each day they should have been. Guess what ? The food is not English. Shock horror. You’re in Spain. The food is very good, very eclectic and there is a lot of it. For those of us who actually don’t mind and expect foods indigenous to the area and other nationalities, it was well received. You can still have Eggs, Bacon, Beans and toast for breakfast. We did. Just don’t expect Lincolnshire Sausages and Black Pudding to go with it. But then you don’t. Do you ? The pools are fantastic. Ask our eight year old. She’s still there. Couldn’t get her out As in one review, the hotel is NOT geared to the German guests. I’m not sure what that means anyway, but we never saw any evidence of bias to any national group. The hotel was very multinational (German, English, Spanish, Italian and East European), and the English contingent seemed to be no less than 35%. Drinks are not served in kid’s cups as I read in one review. If they were at any time in the past, then I suspect a delivery of sensible vessels was due on a manana delivery. Cocktails served in tall flutes, beer in clear plastic 33cl cups, soft drinks in pepsi cups. At meal times, glasses are used anyway. We rented a TV at euros 3 per day and the the hotel’s sat system consists of eight channels, three of which were English language. BBC World, SKY news and the generic free to air MTV channel. The only downside was our fellow guests. I cleared up more than my fair share of other people’s mess from around the pool: and I think if some people could learn to be polite to the hard working staff, then a lot more people might have a happier holiday. I didn’t actually hear any other person say please or thank you to any of the staff, in any language, the whole week. That went for all nationalities. I don’t understand this.
better than expected
we returned from the gran playa on the 15 august after a weeks holiday, after reading some grim reports we were pleasantly supprised. We arrived late 2.30pm one of the families that arrived with us was told ther was no room untill the following day and were sent to another hotel this is common practice during the busy times. We have never stayed all inc. before so didnot know what to expect and so had a completly open mind,we found the food ok ther was a bit of a scrum some times in the morning but we always got a table and the food was plentiful! Lunch again was quite busy some unusual dishes along with the basic salads cheese ,meats bread was in abundance and always fresh we never had evening meals in the hotel we chose to eat out we have two teenageers and we enjoyed trying different bars with entertainment on. We thought we had value for money only paid £1300 for the holiday.we just wanted a cheap pool and sun holiday we were away in May this fitted the bill! Rooms were basic and did the job Entertainment great if your aged between 4 and 10 Service well we found this ok if your polite and courtious you get the same the same treatment ,some of the people and not just other nationalities are down right rude! Food dont expect all english food and be prepared to try somthing different and you wont go hungry! Pool; sunbeds have seen better days and you have to get up early to put your towels out {ive yet to go away were you dont need to do this} TO SUM UP GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY WE GOT WHAT WE PAID FOR if you want five star treatment you have to pay 5 star money
fact not fiction
Read lots of reviews on this hotel prior to going and feared the worst - BUT - as always - if you look for the bad in life you will always find it - but look for the positive and and you just might enjoy your self!!!!! This hotel has recently been taken over by Bonbon Hotels and has obviously looked to maximise income by placing some guests in annexed appartments!! AND whilst everyone had use of the main hotel pool and facilities we would agree with other writers that this could be disapppointing if you ended up in one of the Annexes and you where expecting to stay in the main hotel. We checked in and were placed in an annexed room which whilst dated / tired would have done the job - but - as we had a 2yr old with us and the room was on a 3rd floor (with no lift) we complained (politley) and we were moved into the main hotel the next day! HOTEL ROOMS - are OK - Yes they are a bit Basic - but they are habitable, cleaned 5 out of 7 days and have a fridge for storing water etc.... Air conditioning would be good BUT given the price of this holiday - surely 11 euros for a fan is a small addn fee to pay!!!!! FOOD - If you come to spain be prepared to eat spanish food!! You cant expect to get english style - Egg & Chips or Bangors & Mash. Having eaten all over the world - we considered the food to be OK - yes some dishes may have appeared odd to english taste (Suckling Pig, Frog Fish & Rabbitt) BUT these were actually quite tasty!! There was never a day when we went hungry - even the kids experimented with Sea Bass, Squid etc.... AND GUESS what the same people who were complaining about the food were in the restaurant - Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner????? STAFF - Entertainers were FANTASTIC!! They worked like trojans - and Arnold is definately wasted here. The entertainment is geared around the kids 2yrs to 10yrs old. BUT AGAIN -given what you are paying to stay in this hotel - what do you expect! ALSO as you go on holiday to spend time with your kids - why complain that you cant palm them off onto someone else!! - Bar Staff & Reception - Be curtious and guess what people are curtious back - smile and you might get a smile!! - Those guests who went out of their way to complain and moan may well have recvd. a terse reception / reply. We always got a full round of drinks in & yes maybe the drinks arent as strong as they otherwise maybe - But are you going on holiday to get legless or just to enjoy yourself. OVERALL - We went on holiday to relax, spend time with our kids and enjoy ourselves - AND GUESS WHAT - WE DID - THANKS also to several other like minded families who we met and helped to make the holiday even more enjoyable. - Yes there are faults with this Hotel - but again given what we paid to stay here - we put the faults to one side and didnt let them spoil our holiday. - This is a reasonably priced 3 Star Hotel that meets the basic needs of an all inclusive package. - You only get what you pay for!!!!!
Gran Playa and the mystery meats!
We just returned from a 2 week vacation at the Gran Playa in Sa Coma. Myself and Partner (27) and 2 daughters (6) and (9). I will write this review in sections. Sa Coma: A beautiful resort! Quiet and friendly with a great beach. There is a super market which sets up every Wednesday at the back of the Gran Playa. There is horse riding across the road which costs 10 euros for 1 1/2 hours, excellent value for money! and Plenty of great wee restaraunts. The supermarket is across from the Gran Playa also. There is a safari and zoo nearby which cost us 44 euros for a family of 4. the kids loved it! Staff: The staff at the Gran Playa all spoke a little english, some better than others. We were always met with a smile by the bar and catering staff. The receptionists however were a different story. They were very unfriendly , unhelpful and sometimes rude! I got yelled at on one occasion becuase i didnt put my room number on my travellers cheque!! The maids don't speak English. The building and rooms: We felt the hotel was alright, definelty 3 star. It is an old building and in desperate need of TLC. The dining room had a leak in the ceiling the full 2 weeks we were there, rather than repair it, a bucket was placed underneath to catch the dripping water. The rooms were spotless with the maids cleaning 5/7 (Sundays and Thursdays off). We only got fresh sheets once during our stay however. Our room was in need of repair too. we had a leaking cieling over the bath, hanging wires leading into lights, broken sockets, holes in the wall and broken tiles. Our room had a bedroom with 2 single beds and two single couch beds in the sitting area. The rooms are not air conditioned and to rent a small fan it was 11 euros a week. We rented a safe which cost 30 euros and a tv would have cost us 3 euros a day. Entertainment: I was reading that everyone found the entertainment rubbish but our kids loved it! There was mini club activities in the AM for the younger kids, face painting, drawing competitions, dance practice, arts and crafts etc and in the PM for the older ones and adults there was water polo, ping pong tournaments, shooting etc. Evening entertainment was kids mini disco, then bingo and then a family show. While we were there we saw a Mr and Miss Gran Playa, movie and music quizzes, live music, kids talent show. The entertainers were excellent! We heard both these youngs guys speak about 5 different languages between them!! it took forever to get through a game of bingo when each number has to be repeated 5 times! These guys really worked hard, there were there every single day of the first 9 days! By the end of our stay, there was 4 members of the entertainment staff. Food and Drink: Aaaah, the food and drink really pull this hotel down! The food was good, not to everyones taste. each sitting there was 4 main meals which were different everytime. 2 pastas which were different everytime. The usual salad things, lettuce, onion, tomato, sweetcoen, pickles, gherkins, boiled eggs, cheese, mystery meats (nobody knew what they were!!!) loads of different breads, soups and there was always chips, veg and rice. some of the meals we had while we were there and enjoyed were lasange, pork chops, meatballs, chicken in herb, sea bass, kebabs, spring rolls, pizza. We always found things to eat, my partner said there was little choice but he's a chef and very picky. Things we refused to eat and resulted in us eating out and spending an extra 400 euros were pork sucklings, rabbit in onions, frog fish, the mystery meat, fish croquettes, cordin blue beef, and a whole lot of bizarre named food products that i can only think were aimed at the germans. Drinks were limited to one per person but we never saw this being inforced, we tipped the bar staff a few euros on our first day and got as many drinks as we needed, also a little common curtesy went a long way, although most of the other guests at the hotel were really rude to the staff!! Drinks were served in little plastic cups and it felt terrible to be sitting drinking out of a plastic cup. even the cocktails at night were served in plastic cups! Not wanting to sound like an alcoholic, but we drank every night and we drank plenty but we never got drunk, which made us wonder if the drinks were watered down. The cocktails came from a machine. Pools and loungers: There are 3 pools which are all clean and slanted for different levels of swimmers. The sun loungers were plentiful, no need to get up super early for one. tables and chairs outside also. We did enjoy our holiday at the Gran Playa, but would not return. The room and the food were the negative aspects and the entertainment and location were the posotive aspects of the hotel.
wot a disapponitment
False advertising at its very worst. the hotel had nothing thats advertised in the brochure. don't go all inclusive unless ur actually staying in the hotel itself. we'd booked 2 rooms next to each other, but ended up in fiesta beach apts across the rd. apts were fantastic, private pool, very clean, but too far from the main hotel, so if u wanted a drink then u had to walk 500 yards to get one. and all the drinks were served in kiddies cups. not hot snack just ice cream and sandwiches. no air conditioning, the food was geared up for the german contingent, who on the whole were extremely rude and arrogant. there was no entertainment as such and wot there was was all based around the germans. no kids club. we took our 4 kids, 2, 6,12 and 16. there was sod all for any of them to do onsite. very close to the beach which was always packed solid. weather was fantastic. would definately go back to the resort but definately not this hotel. it was very poor in most areas and when our neighbours were robbed, the hotel staff couldn't have cared less. all the people we spoke to were deeply disappointed.
Do NOT stay here!!!
We have just returned from the Gran playa Hotel, Sa Coma, It is the worst hotel i have ever stayed at. I went with my partner and 2 children aged 5 and 12. we do all inclusive every year and this wasnt the best deal that we've ever had but the best i could find for Sa Coma. It isnt value for money when you do not actually get what you pay for, unless you like the sort of slop i imagine prison inmates would refuse to eat! You are better off paying half the price for self catering and eating out as believe me you will not be wanting to eat the cack they called food!!!! Seriously there is no childrens buffet, there was very little choice and we never ate dinner there once! The Staff are so miserable, dont expect any smiles from any of them, they are not helpful at all but I think its just that they are so demoralised! Please be aware the hotel actually owns three seperate buildings, the gran playa hotel, gran playa apts and the flamingo apts. they tried to put us in the flamingo apts without even explaining that we were not staying with the hotel but thre are no facilities there and after complaining three times i finally made it clear we were not staying anywhere apart from the hotel as that was what id payed for! The hotel itself needs a bit of a revamp but it was clean and comfortable. Our room was nice! There is no air con anywhere! The pools were lovely and all three hads shallow area's but please be careful in the seperate pool as the stairs are falling off! the daytime entertainment is almost non existant and totally aimed at the germans and not the english! Night time entertainment was kids disco, bingo and then quizzes but the main problem was the lack of atmosphere and the germans inability to have a sense of humour! The bars only served the kids one drinkl at a time and at times they would try to do the same with the adults but she never tried to stop me from getting two drinks! There was only about 5 other english families when we stayed and we mostly saw them out and about outside the hotel as they also were disapointed with the hotel! Sa coma was nice, we went to the zoo which was really good as the animals are so close to you! But i wouldnt go back to Sa Coma and I would not wish this dump on my worst enemy! If you have already booked i wish you a happy holiday and hope your experiance is better than ours!
Excellent for those with kids
Booked with Thomson. Father, Mother, 2 children (2½ & 5½ ) stayed. Immaculately clean. Decent bar and food prices. Excellent Thomson staff and hotel staff. Pool for kiddies and older. Very close to shops but not noisy. All English speaking. Limited TV for kids (none other than cbeebies) + SKY news Thomson entertainment for a family was excellent every evening from 8pm to 11pm. Entertainment all day if wanted but not obtrusive. Overall experience – 9/10 We would visit again
Good value for money
I have just returned from a week at this hotel. We arrived at 11pm and were given our keys imediately. My children (4 & 6) were tired and hungry. What a lovely suprise to be shown into the dining room and offered a cold buffet. Already I was pleased. Our room ovelooked the pool, it was basic but very clean. Breakfast was great good selection of rolls, croisants, meats and cheese etc (there was fried if you wanted it). Icecreams and the pool bar opened at 10am til late. We had lunch once, and again it was adequate. There are 3 very helpful staff on reception and 2 not so. The english lady, a young spanish girl and a man later at night were more than helpful. The other staff almost did their jobs. The evening meal was what we expected but bearing in mind the price we payed (the day price was approx £18 per person per day). Show me where you can stay all inclusive for this price in the summer season. All in all I have to say a big thank you to Gran Playa for an afordable holiday. I suggest to those less satisfied get a good travel agent who will explain that at £18 per night expect what you pay for. I have to say my biggest complaint was against the other British who seemed hard pressed to smile. The other nationalties were very pleasant. How embarrassing to be British.
