Gran Playa Hotel
, Sa ComaGran Playa Hotel reviews
we have just returned from a week at the gran playa and its the worst hotel i have ever stayed in paid for all inclusive which was a waste of money as the food was so disgusting we ate out 5 days of 7, the hotel is dirty and totally run down the rooms we were put in were not in the main hotel but in a apartment block across the road so if you wanted a drink you had to keep walking over to the main hotel, the staff were not very helpfull or friendly and the entertaintment was non exsistant

we went in september, the staff were unhappy and seemed tired, the entertainment was awful. the food was ok at the beggining, but got worse as the food was always the same. we spent alot of money on food which you shouldnt have to do with an all inclusive holiday. you get what you pay for and its what you make of it. we had ants in our room our tabs didn't work and the beds where horrible. the weather and the company made the holiday. id stay there again on a self catering basis.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
SOMEBODY FROM ANOTHER ROOM WAS SICK ON OUR BALCONY AND IT TOOK THEM NEARLY TWO DAYS TO CLEAN IT!!
We booked this place as we were looking for a cheap, last minute family getaway. We weren’t expecting the Hilton by any means however; this place isn’t fit for human occupation.
We’ve stayed in plenty of 3 star hotels before and whilst you don’t get the facilities or luxury you get when you stay in 4/5 star hotels, we’ve always found them to be clean and functional – this was neither.
The pool has numerous tiles missing and black mildew where the tiles used to be. The baby pool floor is ridiculously slippy – my daughter fell and banged her ribs within ten minutes of being in it.
The whole of the pool area was filthy – there were all sorts of rubbish and cigarette ends discarded around, that had clearly been there for a while as well.
On our first night, we finally got to sleep around 2am due to the noise only to wake up and find someone had vomited over their balcony onto ours. We went to reception at 7.30am to ask to transfer our room (as we had other issues I’ll mention further down), only to be told we needed to come back at 9am. Went back at 9am, got told to come back at 10am, and went back at 10am to be told the person we needed to speak wasn’t there. The worrying thing is that the chap o reception seemed surprised we wanted to move and said that our room “is a good room” which doesn’t say much for the rest of the hotel.
Then we had to ASK them to clean the balcony! We were told it would be done before 10pm but unsurprisingly it wasn’t. It wasn’t until 6pm the next day before someone came to clean it – which actually involved just slopping a mop quickly around and then giving it a quick brush, by the time she’d finished there was still vomit on the balcony, just less of it and it was more widely spread!
Our fridge constantly leaked – when mentioned to one of the staff it transpires it was because we’d opened it, what were we thinking?!
We had ants crawling all over the sink/kitchen area and were actually living behind the tiles.
Bar one member, all the staff were rude, surly, miserable and extremely unhelpful.
The food was absolutely dreadful and the hot food at least was just pre heated slop out of big catering tins. There was minimal choice, particularly for kids – basically chips then alternated nightly between a form of fish finger and chicken nuggets.
Every meal time also involved our favourite game of find a clean plate – usually took 4/5 attempts. If you don’t get down to breakfast before half 8, then you can forget getting a cup also. They ran out one day, so my wife asked a member of staff for a cup and was told, with a shrug of the shoulders, “none left”!
The “maid service” was virtually nonexistent, we were there for 4 nights and only ever had our beds made – no clean towels, nor floor cleaned.
The toilet was filthy and wouldn’t flush.
The whole place was crawling with insects. As well as the ants in our room, my wife found an unidentified white bug crawling across her chest, we saw cockroaches in the dining room and the amount of flies was ridiculous – although you know what they say about fly’s so it would make sense with this hotel!
I never get bitten whilst on holiday, but my wife and I both came home covered in bites which I’m 99% certain are bed bug bites.
In the four days we were there, the police visited three times!
The last night there was someone dropping two litre bottles of water from the 4th or 5th floor onto our balconies on the first floor.
The beds were like sleeping on concrete.
The room was an accident waiting to happen – broken glass in the window, light fittings hanging off, very slippy floors – not exactly ideal for a family holiday!
The whole area was a dump – it feels like they built this hotel and then some form of slum has been built around it.
I can’t stress enough that you need to avoid this dump like the plague – it may have been ok 40/50 years ago when it opened but it hasn’t been decorated (nor cleaned I suspect!) since.
Easily the worst four nights of my life – the holiday was completely ruined by this cesspit.
Poor food, rude staff, filthy, insect infected, dangerous, noisy hell hole occupied mainly by fat, Irish or northern, chain smoking alcoholics.
I’d rather do four days in prison than go back to this place again.

food edible but repetitive, one sheet only on each bed, not enough equipment to go round ie toasters, chairs etc.
Rooms dirty and unsafe (someone was electrocuted while we were there!!) Staff seem to charge what they want for whatever they want on an ad hoc basis.
We know of two people who actually feel through the sun loungers because they were all cracked and damaged.
They don't empty bins they just, use fly spray to keep flies at bay (which doesn't work)
No air con, no running water in the taps...oh dear shall i go on,
We know we paid for a cheap holiday but not t his....it was a waste and wouldn't recommend it in a million years - oh and two visits in three days because of guests belongings going missing during cleaning x

Stayed here for two weeks between July 27th and August 10th with my wife, three children, mother-in-law and disabled brother-in-law.
Having travelled for 12 hours and arriving at around midnight we were dropped off at the end of the street. This was because you could not negotiate a 57-seater bus in the narrow streets. We were issued with our all inclusive wristbands, offered drinks in the restaurant and taken to our rooms by the night manager.
It's at this point I started to use small words in Spanish, like Por Favor and Gracias. The man seemed to like this and when I complained that there was not enough bedding for all of us he took me to another room and got us some. I again thanked him and he said it was no problem.
When we initially saw our rooms we were slightly disappointed, but this was probably due to us being tired and the time of night.
On waking the next morning, we threw back the blinds and there was wall to wall sunshine. This lifted the spirits and the room didn't seem so bad. It consisted of a living room cum bedroom , a bathroom / shower / sink / bidet, a separate bedroom and a balcony. I noticed that all the sunbeds had towels on them and this was a bit worrying.
We went down to breakfast where there was ample seating, an abundance of various foods, friendly staff and good service. I again used the 'please' and 'thank you' words in Spanish and encouraged my family to do the same. This seemed to please the staff.
On the third day one of my kids managed to break the key off in the door. I went down to reception and asked if they could fix it, using as many Spanish words as I could. Within 20 mins. a guy came to fix the door and everyone was happy.
We asked other guests about the sunbed situation and they said that the sunbeds were limited and you had to be down for 5 a.m. or you had no chance. As I don't like to get up early, we obtained a number of airbeds at bargain prices and used those. Apparently they were much more comfy than the sunbeds. I did get up twice in the 14 days and reserved a bed. Maybe the hotel could have vouchers which are issued on a rota basis, or maybe they could purchase more sunbeds.
The pool area, which has been much abused on a lot of reviews, was clean, welcoming and had seating for those who did not secure a bed. Any plastic cups lying around were the result of lazy guests not clearing up after themselves. The same people who are complaining about the plastic cups lying around.!!! The reason they use plastic cups is to prevent injury around the pool from broken glasses as the wind can sometimes blow up. Any tiles that were missing was the result of kids picking them off the sides (where are the parents?) The lifeguard seemed to have the best job in the world as he sat under a tree for a long time each day. However, when a family member sustained an injury to her foot he provided quick and appropriate attention.
The food in the hotel was brilliant. We stayed for 14 days and I had a different meal every day. My mother-in-law is a diabetic and she had no problems in finding the right food. It is nourishing, varied, wholesome and appetising unless you are used to a diet of burger, chips, pie and mash. There was:
Full English Breakfast / Continental Breakfast / Cereal
Tea / Coffee / Varied Juices / Soft drinks
Yoghurt / Fresh fruit / Dried Fruit / Toast / Jams & Marmalade
Pasta / Rice / Potatoes / Chips / Croquettes
Salad / Coleslaw / Olives(black& green) / Sweetcorn / Beetroot / Onions etc, etc
Chicken / Pork / Fish(all sorts) / Beef / Curry / Paella / Squid etc
4 or 5 sweets(including the best ever rice pudding)
The tables were always clean and the staff were always polite, especially if you tried to speak a few words of Spanish. We got on particularly well with a young lady called Estrella who always acknowledged us whatever time of the day and whatever she was doing.
The bar service was also very good, especially if you used just a few words of basic Spanish. We never had to queue for more than a few minutes and the staff were always polite and willing to help. They got to know my disabled brother-in-law and he was eventually able to get his own drinks from the bar.
The entertainment on the first few nights was terrible under the control of a German fella called Dennis. He disappeared after about 3 days and was replaced with a young lady named Martha. She set about re-vamping the entertainment schedule and training up the remainder of the staff, and what resulted was a varied, fun-packed programme with something for everyone. It's down to Martha and the girls that my tan is not as good as it should have been. The programme included:
Water Polo / Volleyball / Basketball
Archery / Rifle Shooting / Darts / Games of Skill
Children's Games galore
Dancing / Stretching / Exercises
Bingo / Quizzes / Competitions / Games
Martha was fluent in at least three languages and during the second week there were a lot of Spanish guests staying at the hotel. During Bingo Martha called the numbers in both Spanish and English and this helped my daughter to learn a lot of Spanish numbers in a fun way.
The resort of Sa Coma is fantastic and has a wonderful beach, on which there are ample sunbeds, banana boats, paragliding, pedalos etc. The main street has ample shops, bars, amusements for the kids, eateries etc. The Britannia Bar is good for Tribute acts(Gaga, Westlife, Take That and Michael Jackson) although a little expensive when you order a short. Turn left onto the main street and walk about 200m. and you will find Christie's Bar. This is owned by a Spanish man and an English woman. Very relaxing atmosphere and good, attentive service.
We visited Cala Millor, Porto Cristo and The Caves of Drach. Porto Cristo is particularly beautiful and has a slide on a floating platform about 20m from shore. The kids and myself loved this.
A great holiday was had by all and we will return. Maybe next time they will have more sunbeds and aircon.

(we went self catering) the hotel was very basic, and loud at the night but you live with it , the staff were friendly and sorta helpful. the pool entertainment is very good especially the little women, and the pool was clean but dont expect big gardens, and theses limited sunbeds. the hotel is a short walk from the beach and nature reserve which is worth the walk. all in all the hotel was fun ,basic and dated but its what you expect for the price

Like many we spoke to we were very apprehensive after reading the bad reviews. All I can say is that we paid £390 each for all inclusive for one week in a 3* hotel and did not expect 5* luxury for that price. The room was clean enough, and the pool was clean, although I would have liked to have seen the pool area hosed down every day and not just swept. The food was just about ok but what can you expect in a big hotel that has to cater for so many people every day? If you don't like the idea of a buffet meal day in day out, then go self catering or pay a bit more for a 5* hotel. Because we'd paid so little for our holiday we could afford to eat out a few times.....China City is very reasonably priced and the Happy restaurant does a very good paella.
The hotel is understaffed, but perhaps that's another reason why it is so cheap to stay there......but many guests didn't help by never putting their empty cups in bins, they just left them to blow around in the wind instead of walking a couple of steps to a bin! And as for complaining about the drinks being a tiny amount in plastic cups - it was free, did it matter?
I agree with comments about the noise and the towels put on the beds the night before.....but that is not the fault of the hotel, it is the fault of the guests. We had some very noisy people below us who let their kids scream and shout until 1.30 in the morning, and when we looked to see what was going on we were told to mind our own business as they were on holiday. This has happened before when we've stayed at an all inclusive hotel, with people being fuelled all day and night on free drink and I would probably hesitate to stay all inclusive again.
I would recommend this hotel to those who want a cheap holiday in basic accommodation. To those who want a little luxury on holiday I would say to them pay more and go to a 5* hotel, but I suspect some people would still find something to complain about!

We stayed here for a week in October and I am just glad it wasn't my main holiday. There was hardly any staff working at the hotel, the hotel was in a poor state of repair, the nosie at night was a joke, we didn't have a decents night sleep for the duration of the holiday, it was mainly the english who helped to ruin this hotel by their antics during the day and night. The police were called to the hotel nearly every night, due to unruly behaviour, the food had flies landing on it on the hot food hoods and also lots of flies in the dining room in general. The staff were unfriendy and unhelpful, wouldn't feed the food to a dog. The pool area was un-kept and dirty.

hi,we just came back,i was bit worried about hotel after such a bad reviews,but i have to say-we were very pleased.The hotel is only 3 star-so we din't expect super modern furniture,but it was ok,food-very tasty,most of it-english food,so i don't understand why people are not happy about the food,they had every day spanish as well-which was very nice,plenty of fruit and vegetable every day,very good choice...Staff-very nice,helpfull,we have to leave the room at 12 a clock,but our flight was 10 pm,so we paid just 20euros extra for 3 of us,and we could stay in our room all day.Rooms-good sizes,clean,towells and beds clean-change 5x a week,balcony with 2 chairs,little kitchen,dining table with chairs,tv-we paid 8 euros for a week.Swimming pools-clean,safe.Bar-plastic cups-better then glass,because there are sooo many kids,it's much more safe,so i din't mind.Very nice mixed drinks,every night diferrent drink-so again-good choice of alcohol.Beaches-beautifull,white sand,clear watter,not too busy,because it's a small town.Sa Coma-very beautifull little town,we love it,shops very close.

me and my boyfriend have just arrived home from the Gran playa today, we was all inclusive and spent 7 nights at faulty towers. as soon as we arrived a couple were complaining of lack of towels and being unable to shower, also wishing us good luck !! the food was OK, very standard, strange dishes such as rabbit, seahorse and cauliflower nuggets?! however the worst part of our stay was the chicken at tea time, half way through eating the chicken my boyfriend noticed it was pink inside - resulting in myself sat next to the toilet being sick all night. after this we decided to eat out every night - costing us a fortune when we had paid for all inclusive.
families with children were complaining and very unhappy due to it being unsafe and unsanitary !
overall ..... the gran playa hotel SUCKS. only suitable for a couple who aren't bothered about anything other than a bed!!
on the upside we met some lovely people - who are also going back to the travel agents to complain due to not being able to shower for a week and finding cockroaches in the bedroom ...
