March 2006.
David and Jane Lewis from Britain
The Fond Bay suites are an excellent base for the discerning independent traveller. The south of St Lucia offers spectacular scenery and, for the time being, a true friendly and unspoilt Caribbean experience. The suites are comfortable, scenically located and well hosted. They are also quite new (3 years old ).
We stayed for 14 days and hired a small jeep type vehicle for 9 days. Wherever you stay in St Lucia, to enjoy the island you will have to get a car anyway, so the very reasonable rates at Fond Bay easily cover the extra. Over the next year or so developments will start to take place, especially with the 2007 cricket season being based in St Lucia, so get there early to enjoy the real Caribbean! A great place for photographers, botanists and those that wish to escape people. Most of the time we were the only people at the local sites.
We liked: Errard waterfall. (Soon to be a major tourist attraction but we had 2.5 hours there on our own!)
Laborie Beach. (Only the occasional locals. Head north from V.F. and past the village. When you go down the hill turn left just as you leave the village and park there.)
Balenbouche Estate. (Phone at lunch time or the evening before to book a very reasonable lunch at the house.)
Descartier Rain Forest Trail. (A must to really appreciate the ferns, etc.)
Micoud and Dennery villages. (We visited at the weekend and wandered around taking pictures of the locals chatting, swimming and working on their boats with no trouble at all. Classic pictures).
Ti Kaye village. (On the West side close to the Pitons. Great lunch and amazing snorkelling, if you are considering a two centre holiday then this would be a good choice.)
Local Fond Bay beach and walks. (We spent a few days without the car but enjoyed it the local area.)
Eating: Warning! You must like fresh fish! Fox Grove inn, (Local and good value),
Debbies (get directions from Ross, good and famous for its small dishes that go with the main course.) Snacks and basic International food at The Reef on the beach by the airport. Avoid Juliettes Lodge, it was the only bad meal that we had.
