Gteat stay at the Altamadores !!! by a couple from Suffolk!
from Rosie_Posie_09
I along with my boyfriend we booked a 2 week holiday form the last week in July to the first week in August. When we arrived we strolled over to the desk to be greeted by a rather grumpy spanish man who told us where our apartment was situated. We were in luck as there was a lift which was a relief as our suit cases were very heavy. We then strolled over to where apartment were and our first impressions: it was very clean and very spacious, and had everything really to suit basic needs when self catering. It had a good sized fridge, 2 ring cooker, plently of cooking equiptment, a good shower and a safety deposit box. A maid came a few times a week and even did our washing up! I would advise to bring your own towels as the towels supplied smelt a bit fusty! The bedroom was basic but clean and comfertable, and had a good amount of storage for your clothes! There is a small shop right next to the apartment which sells very good bread, but again the Spanish woman behind the till was very grumpy! On a brighter note, when we woke up on our first morning we drew back the curtains and was greeted by a fantastic veiw over our terrace of the beach! The apartment is self is described as 1 bedroom apartment, when really it should be described as a studio, as there was a very large gap at the top of the wall separating the main living area and the bedroom, this was not a problem as there was only 2 of us, however this would have been a problem if there was 3 of us, and would have limited privacy, as the third bed is in the main living area. The pool side bar served very cheap food through out the day, all the wating staff were very friendly. The pool side its self was not that big but very clean, and the pool was just the right temperature. There seemed to be a lot of Spanish people when we stayed and they tended to take up most of the pool. The walk to the beach is roughly 800 meters and rather steep on the way back, which would not be suitable for those in a wheel chair. But we did lose weight through all the walking! The beech is very beautiful and has lots of shops and resturants along the strip all selling good grub. The apartment is also a steep walk to the main night life, and shopping in Puerto Rico, and we had to get a taxi most of the time. It is also worth going on a boat to Puert de Mogan and it makes a good sigh seeing day out. Also the water park makes another very good day out, on the stroll into the park you are greeted by a man who puts a parrot on your shoulder and takes a picture of you! All the water rides are very good also. For things to do in the evening Harleys bar is a good night out, and the drag show is also a good old laugh! The habour has some very good resturants, and is very pretty in the evening. All in all our stay at the altamadores was a good one!
Excellent hotel

We had an excellent stay at the Altamadores. This was the first holiday we decided to book everything ourselves and not through an agent and we are glad we did! We paid the huge sum of £85 for a week's accomodation here and felt we DEFENITLEY got our value for money! The rooms were modern, clean and had seperate living & sleeping areas. The kitchen was well stocked with gadgets including coffee machine & microwave. You can hire heaters, fans and kettles from reception for a minimal charge. The pool area was clean and well maintained and you were able to get a sunbed really easily without getting up at the crack of dawn with your towel! Vicky and the entertainment team were great, keeping us all entertained with water polo competitions and the daily game of BINGO! The only downsides were that the room was only cleaned once during the week and towels and linen only changed once, but I cant really complain considering what we paid originally! The other top tip is to try and get a room quite high up the complex (ask for sea or pool view), although the hotel is covered by CCTV a couple below us (ground level near road) had been broken into and had money and items stolen. The hotel is in a perfect location if you want to be away from the hussle and bussle of the commercial centres of puerto rico. It is just a couple of euros in a taxi down to amadores beach and around 4 to 5 euros to puerto rico harbour and centre. We would defenitley return!!
Altamadores - Spot On!
from Zletsgo
I booked after reading the reviews on here and found the accommodation to be really clean, quiet and spacious. Found the pool area to be clean and as it's quite high up a nice gentle sea breeze took the sting out of the heat of the sun.....nice. The reception people were always friendly and the cleaning service was excellent and they were always friendly too (No grunting locals here at least) Located at the the top of the hill above Amadores beach it was always going to involve walking or taxi's/buses!!! I would reccomend walking either down the hill to Amadores beach (Smallish resort which dies down as the sun goes) where you can walk a coastal path to Puerto Rico (15-20 mins in total) or walking to the Europa centre which is a cheapish gaggle of bars/restaurants/shops. For more lively options or more choice catch the bus which stops outside the hotel which for less than 1euro will take you to Puerto Rico. This bus runs until @ 23:00 taxi's cost around 3-4 euro from Puerto Rico if you can't be bothered to wait. Other tips - Barbacoa in Europa Centre has a good comedian called Ash Wednesday (rude but funny) There is one really nice chilled out Tapas bar called La Cantina which is located by the Marina in Pt.rico do some great cocktails and service is exceptional (Guy called Marcello) For any football games that needing watching head for Linekers!!!

Stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks in July, it was a lovely place to stay, room was very spacious and had everything you need, balcony overlooking the pool with sea view in the distance, the only thing is its a bit out of the way from all the rest of the resort, if you dont mind walking up and down hills then you will be fine you can get taxis cheap enough as well tho the walk down to the beach from the hotel is lovely but its a killer coming back up in the heat, the beach its self (amadores) is lovely crystal clear water and very clean as well, just be warned in july all the spanish come this hotel in the hundreds and did pretty much take over the pool and all the sunbeds, not a problem for us because we just went down to the beach, the staff here are very freindly and helpful, would definatley go back and stay at this hotel again, we had a great time....
Definitely not 4-stars as rated by our travel agent Ving
from GinNorway
We stayed here for 2 weeks. We were 2 adults and one baby (11 months). Our apartment had a great view overlooking the sea, and the cleaning service was very good. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony. BUT, this is NOT a 4 star property. First of all, the food at the restaurant was HORRIBLE. We tried it several times, hoping to find something decent, but were disappointed every single time. This was really disappointing because these apartments are quite a walk from any other places to eat. The rooms were a little run down. Our bathroom was quite run down and could use some upgrading...fixing of tiles, etc. The most irritating thing about the room was that the wall between the bedroom and the living area was not closed off at the top. Therefore, it was very difficult for our baby to fall asleep in the bedroom because of the noise from the living area. We had to spend our evenings being very quiet or had to sit out on the balcony. This was very inconvenient. The channel selection on the television was also poor. Don't even bother putting money into it. Next time we will try to stay at a nicer place that is closer to the beach and other things to do. This might be an okay place for seniors, but I really wouldn't recommend it for families or the younger crowd.
Altamadores is great

The Altamadores apartments are excellent value, location and facilities. They are a little bit of a walk to the Amadores Beach and the Europa Centre (this is nicer than the Puerto Rico Commercial Centre) but they have excellent service and are very clean and tidy. We have just returned from two weeks there and we were amazed at the cleanliness and size of our room. We were in room 401 which was the end one, which was a bonus as it was bigger and had a private balcony. My boyfriend and I are both 23 but not the clubbing type, so we were taken in byt the Europa centre which is about a ten minute walk from the hotel. The best restaurant was the Greo Grill, very traditional spanish, lovely service and good portions with all fresh meats. The best bars were Barbacoa, which is a large Bar in a tent shaped building but with excellent entertainment (in fact 3 shows a night) we saw every show but the best was Chris Mooney (a rock guitarest) and Kimberly (over 18s comedian) The other really good bar was Turbo. This had a drag queen called Trixie Lix aka Liam, who is really funny and does a really entertaining show for the crowd (but this can be very rude, so i would say over 16s) Puerto Rico itself has lovely sandy beach and everything around, but I would say Amadores beach is best. Whilst your there go on the Glass Bottom Boat to Puerto Mogan (its truely traditonal Spanish and well worth a visit!) The Maspalomas sand dunes are amazing a very nice day trip, but best to go by bus (number 39 from Puerto Rico to Playa Del Ingles: its very cheap) Not worth hiring a car whilst your in Gran Canaria as the bus service is very good, if your staying in the Altamadores there is a McDonalds bus for just 90cents. A lovely holiday!!!!!
Altamadores...A must!!
from Smitt06
Me and my partner visited the Altamadores from 2nd-10th September 2006 and must say there are so little faults. We arrived at the complex at 3am and the check-in was great, we were given instructions and then went up to our apartment. As soon as the lights were on, we looked around and the first impressions were "wow"!! A lovely apartment, spotlessly clean and was very spacious. A bottle of water was in the fridge, which came in handy as it was very warm in the early hours!! In the morning we had the chance to look around properly, and both of us just couldn't believe the quality. The bathroom is clean, great shower too! But a little warning, if the tiles become wet they can be very slippery. The safe was around €10, and although the TV was coin operated...50 cents was 12 minutes (€2.50 for an hour) which was brilliant and good channels!! Sky Sports 1, News etc and good movie channel aswell. In the hotel reception, you can get internet and msn access for only €1 for 15 minutes, which is very reasonable. Our first morning saw us by the pool and we found that the number of sun loungers was fine, a good number and never a problem getting them at any time during the day. That was when we first sampled the hotel restaurant, a nice fry up for around €5.80 each. The poolside and pool itself was amazing, so clean, nice looking and swimming pool was equal quality...a fine relaxing day. A little tip, if you want to get sun beds together in your ideal position, then visit the pool around 8am and lay your towels down. We did that on various occasions, no bother at all. The only downside to the pool area is the small amount of construction work being done just on the hill outside, the noise of a jcb can be heard at times but probably won’t bother you that much. The next day we decided to take the walk to the beach. When you look over the fence outside the hotel, the vans and cars in the car park below seem very small indeed making you see how high up the complex is. But don’t let that put you off the walk down the path, as it only takes around 10 minutes, and its a lovely pleasant walk. We walked back up 2 days in a row, and it aint all that bad...but the heat makes it all that harder. If we knew the taxis would be so cheap then we would had got a taxi everyday. Depending on the time of the day the fare changes...in the morning it costs €2.00 but in the afternoon, around €2.50!! Excellent value. The beach is fantastic, that is a must! Basic shops along the beach but some fine restaurants. The Italian Ciao Ciao serves the best Italian you well get all holiday. We had our first breakfast in the hotel, but if you are after an unbelievably gorgeous fry-up then look no further than the "London Pride". A large breakfast for only €5 plus extras at €1 each, a fast efficient service...always friendly and smiles made this our breakfast destination every day from then on. The walk down just to go to the London Pride, then taxi back up made the morning start off at its best. Honestly for its portion size and excellent value, it's worth a try. We ate down on the beach front twice, but other nights stayed in the hotel restaurant. This was once again so cheap and a decent menu made it a good place to eat. The staff are as friendly as you want for a holiday and constantly laughing and talking to you. Pleasant and polite, lovely people... If you need any refreshments, English newspapers, gifts then the Spar supermarket outside the hotel entrance will provide all that you need. The biggest fault I can give is that there is no entertainment in the hotel at all, and all goes quiet around 10oclock, but a stroll down to Amadores beach where the bars are located is the entertainment. All in all the Altamadores is superb. If I was to come back then I would definitely visit again without a doubt. I'm sure if you have booked it then you will have the best time. Thank you Altamadores!!!
Lovely but.........

We stayed in one of the three 2 bedroom apartments....these have no sea view, have a childrens play area directly in front (which can be noisy at 0800) and no private balcony! Having said that the apartment was great, spotlessly clean and a good size. The complexe itself is good, although was overrun with locals at the weekdend, which made it impossible to get sunbeds or parasols and the pool was busy and noisy. The staff are extremely polite and helpful. Getting a taxi is not always easy, especially on market days (Tue, Fri) and weekends. The food at the hotel was basic and the buffet limited. Building work has just started next door - it looks like they are going to build a new hotel. Currently it is a JCB excavating and lorries removing the rubble - a bit noisy and dusty. They do start work early, 0500 some days! This will only get worse. There is no evening entertainment so you do need to go out, which most people tend to do. We found two good restaurants on Amadores beach, an Italian Ciao Ciao (great icecream)and Cafe Del Mar (great Paella) the walk down to the beach is ok but a taxi back up is only 3€! Overall the location of the apartments is good as it is in a quite area but within walking distance of restaurants, shops and entertainment.
Could't fault the Altamadores

We stayed at the Altamadores 21-28 May, and thoroughly enjoyed it! The pool was loveley, with the temperature reaching about 32 even though we'd been told it would be 23 max!! The whole hotel was very clean and welcoming. Reception were very good, especially when it came to ordering us taxis etc and directing us to our room. We were pleasantly suprised at the rooms, as this was our first time self catering. When we arrived at 3am, we found a bottle of water ready for us in the fridge. The rooms were a good size, with plenty of space to make it your own, and a good movie channel!! We ate in the restaurant on our last night, but would have done more often had we known it would be so nice and reasonably priced. The bar and restaurant staff were all very friendly with excellent English speaking skills. I would recommend the duck with orange!!!! As for the town itself, it IS busy, and if you don't want to feel hassled avoid the Puerto Rico shopping centre as you will literally be pulled into bars and restaurants. However, the Europa centre is more relaxed, and they will attempt to entice you in but can take 'no' for an answer! We found that Yates's disco bar was very friendly, and you were treated as an old friend from day one. I would also recommend taking the whale watching tour, especially if you are with Thomas Cook. The boat staff cannot do enough to make you comfortable and treat you like royalty, whilst you get an excellent day out with swimming off the side of the boat, a short speed boat ride out and a lovely meal cooked on the boat. Its also good if you actually want to see the dolphins!!! Overall, we really enjoyed our holiday in Puerto Rico, as there was a nice mix of having the beaches and the excellent service from the locals to help you relax, but also some good nightlife if you wanted to live a bit more. Recommended!!!
Altamadores - Will Be BackForMores!
from A TripAdvisor Member
Holiday from 13th to 21st May 2006. Will be recommending the apartments to everyone. I enjoyed the 15 minute walk (down a steep road) to get to the lovely Amadores Beach but was equally happy lazing by the pool on the immaculately kept terrace. This is a Ving recommended hotel - so we were one of only two Brit couples - all other guests Spanish or Scandinavian. The apartments were clean, the noise level minimal with no noise at all after 11pm. Restaurant prices very reasonable (5 euros for a serve-yourself-all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast) and good a la carte evening menu. Satellite television available (by coin-slot television) and the 10 euros I fed into the t.v. lasted all week - including watching all the Grand Prix and Eurovision Song Contest). Room safe available for 10.50 euros for the week - roomy enough to hold all valuables and canon Rebel camera. However the real selling point for these apartments is the staff. Throughout the whole week we were greeted with cheery “Hola’s” and warm smiles. Service level was faultless - and nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who would organize taxis, flag down passing buses and supply endless euros for internet facilities in the lobby (50 cents for 10 minutes - 1 Euro for 30 minutes - excellent value). Another plus for the self caterers is the Spar located on the ground floor of the apartments open from 8am to 1pm and 2pm to 8pm daily (closing at 2pm on Sundays) with a good stock of foreign newspapers, English foods (walkers crisps, Heinz beans, HP sauce just some of the items available), delicious fresh bread, meats, cheeses and fruit and vegetables, together with all those items that you forget to pack (aloe vera gel, plasters, wet wipes… you get the idea). Temperature was 34 degrees with a cloudless blue sky and 10 hours of solid sunshine. (The terrace gets the sun from 8am until 7pm and is a real sun-trap…so take care not to overdo it like I did the first day!) As I said - I would recommend the apartments to anyone who doesn’t mind the walk down or up the hill… although I am torn…. Part of me wants to keep it “my secret” so that it’s still as unspoiled and relaxing when I go back next year… and the year after… and the year after…….!
