My wife and I booked to go to Venice in September 2007. We booked flights & bus transfers with Ryanair to Venice (Treviso) Airport and the hotel through the Hotelclub.com. The flight and transfers were faultless.
Everything on time, no problem getting seated. We had minimal luggage for a 2 day break and, in fact kept it on our laps the whole way, thus could greatly lessen any risks of loss or damage that way.
The hotel, despite being booked one week in advance presented us with a big problem. On arrival, having handed in our print off accommodation voucher we were greeted by the receptionist with a "...I’m sorry but we don't appear to have received your reservation!"
We did not get to see anything of the hotel Edelweiss Stella Alpina (beyond the entrance/reception area and stairs which did look nice), but instead were given the option to stay at the Hotel Florida in the same street.
After enquiring at other similarly priced nearby hotels and found them to be either fully booked or unfavourable for reasons of appearance, location etc, we decided to try the Hotel Florida.
Our room (35) was very nice, clean, modernised, a reasonable size and for a basic hotel everything was fine.
Only disappointment was the breakfast. Whereas in Milan or Rome it seems to be standard to offer a full buffet breakfast with fresh meat, cheese, fruit, breads, cakes and pastries, but in Venice not so, or at least not so at under £100 prpn!
The Hotel Florida is a 2* hotel offering an adequate breakfast (if you can tolerate packet croissants, processed cheese slices). Location of hotel excellent. Quiet at night, very close to train station and not far from bus station or Co-op supermarket.
Best of all, perfectly located just 50yrds from three main water bus stops. One can get to almost anywhere in Venice, Murano, Burano, Lido and beyond from these three stops.
Venice itself is a marvellous place for a 2 or 3 night break. We would not recommend it for families (especially those with young children), but would recommend for couples of all ages, art & history lovers, keen photographers and business folks alike. It is largely a pedestrian city, so one must be prepared to walk distances in order to see everything. Not really a great night time city. There are clubs and bars there but we didn't encounter any as such.
