I have just returned from two weeks all inclusive at the Puerto Azul resort. I travelled with my girlfriend and my other two friends. We have all had a great time and the hotel is very nice.
I know allot of reviews say the food is no good, but there is a variety, and you cannot expect to go abroad and have an English based menu, but the food is very orientated around the Spanish ( to which there is a very large number ) at the hotel.
This was the biggest draw back. Some where fine but others were quite arrogant, they seem to think that because they use the complex as a holiday hot spot it belongs to them. But they probably think the same about us.
The hotel is at the top of the resort and if you am unlucky you could end up with a room that looks straight at the rear of another complex (rooms 4110 onwards have no view). On the other hand you could get a room with a great view of Puerto Rico bay or town.
The maid service was not great; they came in once every two days. We were given no towels and even though I asked for them every day at reception, I had to get the tour rep to arrange for some to be delivered. These were not changed once, just hung on the towel rail a different way to make it look like they were, and we had to ask for more toilet paper as they never brought any new rolls.
Even though we had these minor problems (could be major to some people), we managed to have a good time, the beer is nice and cold and there is a large variety of drinks and snacks available all day till 11.00pm, and you can have as much as you want.
All in all the holiday was good; it’s what you make of it. We won't be going back, but don't regret going.

Ok, we stayed here in June 07, just me and the wife. We had such a good time we rebooked in August independently and took our two children.
So, here we go an honest review of this hotel.
Rooms were ok, all rooms you might get the odd cockroach but you might expect that anywhere. Clean lifts all over so no problems in getting there etc. Bit dark and dingy on lower floors but satisfactorily clean.
Pools (3) are very nice although when highly used, they over do the chlorine so for a couple of days you cant see underwater. (Too picky?) There is a smell but it comes from the vents near the toilets which are next to the pool bar. You only get a slight whiff when walking past close although the toilets don’t smell and are clean.
Pool bar is great and found bar people good both times. So what if it’s the only bar, how much do you want to drink!!!???
Food is up and down. Nicely presented and good salad selection but other food is unpredictable. Pasta is constantly good and you like fish, you'll love the food. Loads of fruit available. Not al'a carte but satisfactory given money you spend!
Most reception staff(we know them all) are satisfactory with the exception of the ginger headed one who can be very rude on an off day!
Possessions you need to keep in safe or on you, as wages are poor and although most cleaning staff are friendly, they've got kids to feed, don’t worry, just don’t leave anything lying around. It’s worth tipping them, as they'll do an extra special job, especially if you've got kids. (Bomb site!)
The hotel is right on the top, on the end of a peak so you enjoy 270 degree views of Puerto Rico which is amazing and I think, almost un-matched. Up there you get a nice cool breeze all day but believe me, it is hot, oh, and watch your nose. 95% of Brits thought it was red nose day!
Entertainment is a bit pants. There was a guy doing it and he was good but he left and now there are a couple of gals who try there best and are great with youngsters. Snake shows are a bit crap but worth watching once.
Sunlougers, HHmmmm. Stealth springs to mind. You’re not allowed to reserve loungers but get up to the pool area before 9am and put your towel/s over them and they'll be there after breakfast. Rule of thumb is that no one touches a lounger with a towel on it. Get there at 10.30 after breakfast and you'll probably only have a selection of a handful of broken ones.
Anyway, as a summary, for the money, it’s ok. A holiday is what you make it, not what there is to moan about it. Just follow the rules above. Take care of all high value possessions, jewellery, money etc, towel on lounger before 9am, and buy some swimming goggles! Other than that, if you’re not picky, you'll have a great hols!

My boyfriend and I were moved from another hotel as it was dire. When we got to the Puerto Azul we waited for about 10 mins to get our room. The receptionist was very helpful and nice. We got a gorgeous sea view but the only problem was that we had been moved to a room only. However, that didn't deter us as it was a much better than the hotel we were in.
As a result of the good hospitality we had we have booked to go to the Puerto Azul this year and we are going on an all inclusive basis. The only problem that I have is the fact that the bar closes at 11pm and not when the last person leaves which I think it should do.
Overall the hotel and staff were very pleasant.

Well I don’t know where to start!
We arrived at the hotel and were given a map which none of us understood, we then had to find our way to our rooms. We looked for about 30 mins then went back to reception. We asked a Spanish man if he could show us, we got taken to the first lift, then had to catch another lift to get to our rooms.
The staff at the hotel were very rude and miserable; they would serve the Spanish before anyone else in the queue. Sometimes they would only have 1 barman on at night and there would be a queue of at least 100 people. Also the bar shut at 11pm, and didn’t open until 10.30 in the morning!
The food was disgusting all we ate was bread and chips every night.
There was no entertainment for adults; there was only snake shows or karaoke every night, where the animation team would sing the same songs.
Our rooms were OK! But we never got any clean towels unless we asked. There were ant everywhere, crawling all over the sofas.
The pool never got cleaned. Also the lifeguard regularly sat there doing nothing, or talking to the staff in the kitchen.
Overall rating: Very poor, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. We will never be returning to Puerto Azul!

We recently stayed at the Puerto Azul and we had a negative all inclusive experience. We are a young couple and generally stay in 3* hotels which we are happy with however we could not rate this as a 3* more like a 2*.
Along with nearly every other person we spoke to portrayed the hotel as 'terrible'. The problems we came across include;
1) There is no security whatsoever in the hotel, made us feel insecure at times.
2) The entertainment is extremely poor, some nights no entertainment at all. They advertise an entertainment programme but the director won't even give the 'animation' team bingo cards.
3) We identified a total of 8 bar and restaurant staff for the whole hotel and the size this is just not enough (268 apartments, possible 4 people per room!).
4) Some nights and days only one bar man on and only one bar all the time, this meant ridiculously long queues (there were over 100 people in the pool bar at times).
5) Some receptionist very unhelpful and one could speak little English, we asked for clean towels and were told she could not do anything.
6) Did not receive clean towels for 4 days, the maid simply folded the dirty ones or even put them on the balcony to dry.
7) The tour operator we booked with said the hotel attracts mainly a British clientele although the majority of the people in the hotel were Spanish.
8) Due to no security, at weekends all the locals wonder in off the streets and use the pool and loungers, the weekend before we came home there was that many that we were unable to use sun loungers (gangs of young Spanish people intimidated us whilst in the pool etc).
9) The food in the restaurant was up and down, the majority of the time the food was very repetitive however a couple of times the food was acceptable, this made us dine out a number of times which defeats the object of a all inclusive holiday.
10) The food from the pool bar was actually enjoyable however the bar treat you as second class citizens when the paying people or Spanish are there. The bar man simply leaves the bar to cater for them when there is a long queue of A.I. customers.
11) We arrived at our a hotel the day after we were meant to book in so in theory we lost a day, but they wanted to charge us 40 euros and also apparently wanted to cut us off from the all inclusive at 12 when we checked out (a little arguing got us the A.I. for the rest of the day)
Overall the hotel was a let down to the reviews I had read; the only good points would be the pool area and the cleanliness of the rooms. We would not recommend going to this hotel as it is badly managed.

Read this before booking this hotel please!
Right where do I start all I can say is this is the worst hotel I have ever been to in my whole life. I went here in July 2007 with 3 of my mates when we first got there we thought the hotel looked really nice just like all the pictures we had seen before and were really excited. We read lots of reviews before going and most were good so we ignored the rest but wish we had never booked it!!
Please don’t let me put you off going to peutro rico its self because I have been there twice before and the hotels were great I just really really don’t recommend peurto azul and hope you read this and think carefully before booking!!!.
A Spanish man told us it was the worst hotel on the whole island!!!
Bad points:
1. Food was disgusting most food not even worth looking at!!! (Veal stew!)
2. Pool never got cleaned
3. Staff were very rude to us throughout our holiday
4. A lot of personal items got taken from the room
5. Alcohol was watered down
6. There was no entertainment for people ages above 8 because all the entertainment they had was snake show, snake show, snake show, snake show, parrot show, man on a piano and snake shows!!
7. There was a disgusting smell around the pool and near the kitchen!!!
8. We hired a safe for 38 Euro and reception refused to give us our deposit money back
9. On the last day we were not aloud in the restaurant for food (even though all we ate was chips and bread!!!) because we were leaving at 6.15 for the airport but we had paid for the full day in the hotel so should have bin aloud food but weren’t.
10. While we were there a Spanish women stole my friends lilo off her sun bed (we saw her do it) and refused to give it back claiming it was hers and complained to the manager about us!!!
There is lots more bad points but can’t think at the moment
Good Points;
Night life was good
Only 3 Euro down to all the shops, restaurants and bars
Lots off taxi’s all day and night

My collaborator and myself reserved a week away at the Puerto azul hotel! The hotel itself was immense, employees we pleasant but half of them could not understand a word we said!!
The hotel was very clean and the cleaners did a first-class job! Rooms were very equipped and provided you with everything you needed, recommend to get a safe!!
We were expecting temperatures to be around 26 but it was much hotter than this, and got a gr8 skin tone! There are plenty of trips to do camel rides, scuba diving, cruises, and quad biking!!
Taken as a whole we both had an overwhelming occasion and were gloomy to draw closer to our residence!!
Would advise!

MyTravel Rep was useless! Staff at hotel were miserable, rude, and quite clever at times.
Rooms were shabby and dirty. Cockroach problems on lower floors. The all inclusive features were stingy. Bar shut at 11pm. You could only get 1 drink each visit which meant you couldn’t get an extra round in at 10:45pm.
The entertainment didn’t start till as late as 10:30pm some nights...then the bar shut at 11pm! Great our holiday wasn’t ruined as we spent a lot of time out of hotel.
On a weekend there weren’t enough sunbeds to go round the guests and there were a lot of Spanish that came for the weekend. English were treated like second rate citizens whilst they were there.
So we were forced to beach on weekend. Pool area was nice though...when you got a sunbed.
Food was hit and miss. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Pool bar menu stingy... only 6 items on the menu of 20 things were allowed free on all inclusive! Also many drinks were not included on all inclusive.
Cocktail bar, cabaret room, and a la carte restaurant did not open once the whole 2 weeks we were there.
Do not recommend.

Not long returned from week break at Puerto Azul.
Was welcomed by a miserable receptionist and given a room that was like being in an underground car park, on entering found it to be dirty with a two inch rusty nail sticking out of bathroom floor.
After complaining we were moved to a beautiful room with a fantastic sea view.
Absolutely no entertainment to talk of, and struggled to carry our 3year old son down 600 steps to the beach and town.
On the plus side pools were brilliant and sea views amazing.
Would never recommend the Puerto Azul but Puerto Rico is lovely, weather constantly hot and sunny.

Not the same. In December 2005 we were on holiday in Puerto Rico at Puerto Azul and we loved the place and the always smiling personnel.
So we were really looking forward to be in the Puerto Azul again, because we have been on holiday 4 times this year and we missed Puerto Azul.
So we went to Puerto Azul for 2 weeks, 2 adults and 3 kids.
And it was so bad. No one was smiling, no one said good morning or hello in the reception and never smiling.
It was not the same personnel as in December 2005 only 2 bartenders.
We were eating in the pool bar and there was hair in the food, we told the waiter, and he said that happens sometimes. We had to pay full price for the food still.
So we never eat more there. Not very nice to know. In Denmark there will come a new dinner or not pay for that.
The people there always were smiling was a great bartender and the cleaning personnel.
We will never stay there anymore or spend our time there anymore.
We cannot recommend Puerto Azul anymore, because of the personnel in the reception and the way we have been treated, we know of other hotels we will stay in Puerto Rico and that is not Puerto Azul anymore.

Just returned from what was until departure day a great holiday. Great weather, great apartment, great week!
On arrival day the reception asked to keep our passports for security purposes, but they stated that we could pick them up the following day.
Being in holiday mode we forgot about them.....and stupidly assumed that they would be safe on reception. On checking out, we asked for our passports back, the receptionist could not find them. She looked everywhere and even called her boss....but to no avail.
It was a little disconcerting to see a pile of passports just sitting on the reception desk in no apparent order. In the end the receptionist gave up looking and carried on serving other guests.
The passports never showed up and we can only believe that they were stolen. Thomson are now refusing to pay any compensation for new passports.....
So take note....DO NOT leave your passports at reception at the Puerto Azul!

I have just returned after 1 week all inclusive. After reading the reviews on this hotel before going I tried to change my hotel but couldn't afford the move!!! So half heartily went on holiday.
But went I arrived and got to our room all the reviews I had read had been exaggerated our room was very large, clean, balcony large with table and chairs. No ants and no cockroaches, as I had read in an review!
The pool area and pools were clean. We never had any problems getting sun loungers and most mornings we would go out somewhere and come back later.
Yes food was ok there was always different choices always the British favourite (or so the Spanish seem to think) chips!! I never queue longer than 10mins at the bar.
I didn't have any problems with the staff, they all seem very nice.
Towels in rooms could have been changed a bit more once a week is the normal,
but in all I enjoyed my stay there.
