Hesperia Hotel Reviews

Jun 2005, Ms K Dunne

The staff at the hotel were very helpful and the room greatly exceeded my expectations, with lots of storage space and beautiful paintings. I was travelling with my 2 year-old daughter and would definitely recommend the hotel to other families, particularly the apartment... more

Liked the Hesperia
We stayed at the Hesperia Ist week of May and were pleasantly surprised! We'd booked a 2* and so were not expecting more than a clean room. However, though the room was small, with aown shower and toilet, it was more than functional, despite being in a small hotel. It was situated in a quiet part of town and within easy walking distance of all the places we wanted to get to and the water bus was just 5 minutes the other side of the canal! Water bus was very good value and great way to see the city, it unique beauty and every day busstle - just hop on and off, buy a map with the water bus-stops on. A 3 day ticket is just 25 Euros and worth getting (at the airport and covers your bus to and fro from airport too!) Breakfast was continental style and plenty of it. The sisters that own and run it are on site daily and their small staff were friendly and helpful too. There's a safe in the wardrobe, which is handy and the 10 Euro deposit is returned at the end of your stay. We'd certainly recommend it as a budget stay and stay there again if we're lucky enough to come back to Venice. Not as expensive as we thought as we did take time to check out the menus first...tourist menu is quite good value as often portions are generous. Don't bother with the money-changers, we did get ripped off once wih an 18% handling fee, just put your card in any ATM instead. Murano is over-rated and the glassware is extonate, we understand since that Burano is much nicer. Harry's bar is over-rated and tiny and be wary of sittin in most bars, the price of your drink shoots up, the thing the locals do is sip their Campari's standing at 'the hole in the wall'-type bars, much cheaper!! There was loads to see and do and we were really lucky with the weather too! So enjoy! Ciao! Regards Ruki and David Miller Ps. Only thing we'd not really expected were the mosquitos...though really to be expected as right by a canal...duhh! We splatted a couple or 3 every night and discovered a wet tissue cleaned up the bloody evidence pretty well!
pleasant stay
Hotel in good but quiet location. Absolute silence during the night. We were lucky to have top floor room with terrace adjacent (not specifically for that room but handy). Room and shower room compact but efficient. Decorated in a pleasing manner. Lots of steps to third floor but worth it if you can manage it. All the rooms appeared different in layout and space. Breakfast comprised orange juice, fruit, fruit salad somedays, cereals, yoghurt, rolls, croisant and jams, tea/coffee. No problem with the hotel facilities. Handy for the vaperetto and local restaurants. Food in restaurants mainly of pasta, pizza, fish, etc., very few vegetables provided. Meals expensive but coffees and ice cream very reasonable. Stand at bar for cheaper priced coffee. Three day vaperetto tciket worth it just for seeing all the various waterside buildings. If you are staying for any period try taking the train inland to see the rest of the veneto (Veronna etc). The train is extremely cheap 3.85 euro for an hours journey to Vicenza! We are a reasonably fit just pensionable couple.
Once again, a great experience
I just got back after a three-night stay in the Hesperia. I had stayed there once before, in 2004, and was curious to see if it could live up to the great impression I'd gotten back then. Indeed it could, and more so. This time we paid a little more for the room, and got a lovely room right on the Canal. If you can, aim for room 205. The service was great - no smoke - the rooms were clean, and again, within walking distance from everything. I will stay in this hotel, when back in Venice.
Great location but too much cigarette smoke ..
This hotel is in a great location but if after reading the other reviews on this site you think it might turn out to be really nice you are very likely to be disappointed as I was. The rooms are basic, without even bedside tables, only one chair, minor irritations really. The towels were not changed during a week long stay. But the real problem for me was that it STINKS! Literally. Despite the NO SMOKING sign at the reception, the night reception staff chain smoked and the smell wafted throughout the building and under the large gap at the bottom of the door to my room. Despite a sympathetic hearing from one of the lady proprietors, the next night it was even worse. I couldn't wait to get back to clean air! If a short romantic break is what you are looking for, pay a few euros more and go elsewhere is my advice.
Great Place, Super Friendly family run place.
Me and my family visited Venice back in 2004 and really lucked out finding this hotel. One of my best experiences traveling Europe was staying at the Hotel Hesperia.
A warm and relaxed stay in Venice.
Stayed at the Hesperia for 6 nights over Capodanno 2006. It is a small family run hotel in a very practical yet quiet location on the Cannaregio canal. It is an easy 10 minute walk from the train station, 15 minutes from Piazzale Roma and we were able to stroll to Piazza San Marco in 20 minutes. We were allocated room 108, a double room on the 1st. floor looking onto the Cannaregio canal. We found it to be a clean, spacious room with a good sized ensuite shower room. It was simply decorated, with dark wood furniture and Venetian glass light fittings. It was a lovely experience to be able to open the shutters and experience the opera of Venetians going about their day to day lives in this unique city. We found the owners and staff to be always friendly and helpful and this created a warm and relaxed environment throughout our stay. There are a number of restaurants nearby but I can recommend a few where we enjoyed the local cuisine at reasonable prices, again in a warm, friendly and relaxed environment. They are Da Beppi, Salizzada D. Pistor - superb reliable cuisine, Trattoria Tre Spiedi, Salizzada San Canciano - great food, very helpful staff, Al Milion, corte Primera al Milion - more expensive but had a superb feast there on New Year's Eve (un Cenone di San Silvestro). Further away in Dorsoduro, I can recommend Taverna San Trovaso, Fondamenta Priuli - great value food, lovely pizzas. Venice is a visually stunning and enchanting city, a city famous for its art, music and architecture. Our experience at the Hotel Hesperia and in the above named restaurants shows that these qualities are matched by the warmth and friendliness of its people.
Clean, Friendly, Reasonably priced
This small, hotel, within easy walking distance of the train station is an excellent base for tourists in Venice. Rooms are very reasonably priced, simple and clean. No frills or glamour, but comfortable beds and clean surroundings. Staff are welcoming and friendly. There is no elevator and quite a few stairs might need to be climbed to reach one's room (we had to negotiate 40 of them!) but as long as you're reasonably fit and don't have heavy luggage, you should be OK. Recommended for those who want to stay in Venice *without" spending huge amounts of money for a hotel room, but who also want a clean, quiet, comfortable lodging.
Great location, great staff
My 2 year-old daughter and I have just returned from a stay at Hesperia and had a lovely time. The owners and staff are wonderfully warm and helpful, the location is wonderful, and the room was incredibly spacious, well-appointed and decorated with beautiful paintings. The hotel is very conveniently located for the Ferrovia vaporetto stop/train station, and can be reached from Ferrovia in a ten-minute walk without any stairs -- helpful for wheeled luggage and/or the pushchair set! It's located on a quiet street, close to the playground at Parco Savorgnan, which is nice for the kids. I would recommend this hotel to any family looking for a central and friendly base in Venice.
Our Stay at the Hesperia
We found this hotel by chance after we got off the train from Florence. It is located away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas around the train station, but close enough to be convenient. This was great because you did not have waves of tourists walking under your windows or have to carry your luggage a far distance. The hotel was very clean, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the hotel had an overall comfortable atmosphere. We had a room situated apart from the main building with our own little terrace. It was wonderful to have this privacy.
Loved the hesperia
Hotel hesperia was great! I would highly recommend it to everyone. It is close to the train station, but away from the seedy areas, and it is a 15 minute walk to San Marco and the Rialto. The hotel itself had bigger than average sized rooms and the staff was fabulous. They helped with everything, from carrying bags in to giving directions to recommending delicious places to eat. The two sisters are the nicest people I have met in Italy and they speak many languages well. They bend over backwards to help you! The breakfast was good too, it got you going for the day.
