Asked for 'Cheap and cheerful' - this was neither!!
My family and I recently returned from this hotel and although I do not usually make these sorts of reports I feel it my public duty to write a review of this hotel. It was the worst hotel I have stayed in after, over 25 years of travel. When we arrived at 2am in the morning the receptionist informed us that we neither had adjacent rooms - I had booked 2 rooms as we travelled with our 14 and 17 year old daughters - or a sea view, which we had also requested. The rooms were on the 4th floor and my daughters bedroom was the tiniest I had ever seen. They were also put in a double room, we had of course booked a twin room for them. The double beds were the smallest I had ever seen and on what appeared to be a camp bed frame with a very hard and small mattress. The pillows were well worn as were the sheets. Our room had the pleasure of what appeared to be the extractor fan through the balcony and up to the roof above our room which made a continual noise - deafening. The bathroom plumbing had a problem and made a loud banging sound every few minutes. I could not sleep and immediately complained and even asked if another hotel could be located. The receptionist tried to find other rooms/hotels but stated this could not be done until the morning. My husband and I gave up trying to sleep and wandered around at 4:30am. The next day we waited for new rooms, which eventually we gained - one not until 8pm, and they were 8 doors apart and my daughters bedroom balcony did not lock and the lights blew on more than one occasion. The rooms were never cleaned properly. The AC was extremely poor and only one out of 3 vents worked. The TV consisted of only 2 English channels, BBC World and CNN. The food was only passable and the restaurant canteen like without any atmosphere. The entertainment was laughable, and not in an entertaining way! The three pools did not exist only one outside and one indoor and when we arrived the outside pool was littered with newspapers and debris. There is at present building constructions occurring nearby. I complained about all of the aforementioned and on more than one occasion tried to speak to a Manager - but to no avail as no Manager ever spoke with me which I find appalling. We gave up with the pool which needed desperate maintenance and new sunbeds tables, etc, which were not cleaned during our stay. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is the view which was across the port and Cala Bona is a pleasant holiday resort, although not very stimulating.
good holiday but had its problems
We arrived at the Catalonia Consul in the last week of June. We stayed at this hotel last year so knew what to expect. What a difference the room allocated can make! Last year we were placed on the 4th floor, a huge room with a massive balcony and lovely sea view. This time round we were placed in the building behind on the second floor with a bit of a pool view. The room and balcony were both about 1/3 the size, much to our disappointment. We were straight down to reception to asked to be moved but were told the hotel was nearly full and to come back the next day. So the following morning we went back to reception and were fobbed off once more being told to return the next morning. We still had not unpacked as we were expecting to be moved. On the third day we asked once more and were told this time that there were some 3rd floor rooms overlooking the sea available and that were could move the following morning. So back we went to reception the next day.. only to be told that there werent any rooms and we had to stay put. So one tip- dont expect to be moved rooms cos chances are you won't. Reception are useless. Other than the room issue, the hotel was ok. Food was good for a three star hotel. Breakfast was between 8am and 10am, and dinner between 7pm and 10pm. The entertainment was below par in the evenings, unless you like to play bingo every day and watch people dancing round the stage in what was supposed to be a professional act! During the day, the entertainers tried their hardest to involve guests around the pool in activities such as skittles, darts, french bowls, air rifle shooting, water games etc. The maid service was poor, we were frequently not given bath towels, or just given one to share which meant a trip to reception to ask for more. Aside from the hotel, Cala Bona is a lovely resort. Its fairly quiet so not a good place to go if you want to go clubbing but there are some lovely restaurants such as Janet & Johns, and Smithys. We frequently visited SANDDANCERS, a brilliant family run geordie karaoke bar. The staff are so welcoming (Hola Faz, Tracey, little Faz and Smirnoff!) If you're reading this little Faz, keep up the card tricks and better luck next time in Connect 4!. Sanddancers is the perfect place for familys to go to, with a kiddies area at the back and plenty of singing and jokes to keep the adults entertained. And with a free shot after every song sung, you can get wasted for nothing! Sanddancers is a must to visit if you go to Cala Bona. You wont be disappointed! Overall the holiday was enjoyable. We probably will return in the near future but stay at a different hotel as the Consul let us down. Bon Voyage!
Huge Water Supply Problem
I booked a one week holiday with Air Miles, having read the reviews about this hotel. Cala Bona is lovely, relaxing and warm. The Catalonia Consul was a fine hotel, with one MAJOR problem which has ruined the holday - after I arrived, the first night I discovered there was no hot water in my room. I made a complaint and was told it was to be fixed the following day. The second day I had warm water in the morning, but none in the evening, so complained again. I was asked by staff to shave and shower in the public shower in the swimming pool area, where the water was warmer, having been promised it would be sorted. This went on for three days, until we were told it was fixed, and had to drag the reception manager to the room until he felt it himself. He then found another two rooms, both of which he agreed he would not shower in, and this continued until the penultimate night, when we were asked to move rooms - maybe partly because they had been in and dismantled the shower and disconnected the water supply completely! I had even hired a kettle to boil water to wash hair in the sink. Apart from being a lovely hotel with nice food and pool, this completely ruined the holiday and I personally will NEVER visit there again. But at least they did give me a bowl of fruit! One other tip - NEVER USE RESORT HOPPA - absolute nightmare to try and arrange, then never managed to get "on their list" anyway, Use the bus.
EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY
We have just returned from a short stay at the catalonia hotel, cala bona. I read the feedback before i booked and paid and wondered what i might have done! What a surprise, a room overlooking the harbour, which was not requested, was a great start. Overall i could not find a complaint, usually at best you only get what you pay for, in this case it was an absolute bargain. The hotel was in a superb position, clean and tidy, meals perfectly good but not inspiring and all the staff VERY polite and helpfull. I have stayed at many 3 star hotels throughout spain and this was one of the better ones. I intend to make a return visit to this hotel later in the year. It seems that those leaving poor feedback must want something for nothing, and have obviously never suffered the cost of a stay in Cornwall or similar!
Bargain?- you get what you pay for!
We thought we'd found a good buy here and tend to give credence to the more optimistic reviews, but our experience was more in tune with the moaners and whingers. It was no help that our arrival was unexpected (we booked via Venere), and we were given a rear-facing room; not a suicide-inducing vista but not as pleasant as the front rooms. The room was in a poor state of repair and needed decorating to cover accumulated filth; the cleaners' performance through the week showed how it had accumulated - nothing received more than superficial attention at any time. Food choices were limited, and a lot of obviously cheap produce was used but generally food was acceptable, not luxurious. Various staples disappeared at times through our stay, making us wonder whether suppliers had 'pulled the plug' for some reason. We found the staff friendly and obliging, even if the inexperience of the many youngsters showed at times. The dire standard of 'entertainment' sent us out every evening to sample the superior offerings in other hotels in the vicinity, one of which will be our destination when we return to this charming resort. Our overall impression was of a hotel past its best and making no progress towards revival by concentrating on the economy market; it seems more likely to go on to 2 stars than 4. Loved the harbour view
This hotel is in a fantantic location but I would advise a room at the front of the hotel. We were given a room at the back overlooking a back street but managed to change after 2 nights. The view from the front room was spectacular day and night, something money cannot buy. The harbour is lively and full of life and lovely in the evening with lots of pavement cafes and bars. The hotel food is good if at times a little cold. We found it best to grab a warm plate and ask for meat from the carvery which is lovely. The downside of this hotel is the bar area which is unispiring with poor entertainment and no atmosphere. However there is so much happening in the resort you can find lots to do. Plenty of music and bars to suit all tastes. The rooms are nice and spacious but could be cleaned more thouroughly, after a few days I started dusting it myself! The hotel is good value for money if a little basic.
Two holiday's in one week !!!
It is possible to experience two different holidays in the same hotel. Initially we were in a room at the back of the hotel. The balcony was looking straight at a concrete wall which was the side of a building about 6-8 metres away allowing no view what so ever with little or no sun and a road underneath. After asking to be moved they shifted us to the front of the hotel after 2 days. What a difference!! The room overlooked the harbour, was sunny and traffic free, a totally different holiday experience. A room at the front of the hotel is an absolute must or you could end up feeling a bit dissatisfied. The rooms are relatively clean and tidy, with the bathrooms ok (The shower was much better than it looked). The breakfast was as expected with a good selection of English or continental. Although we were half board we only ate in the hotel for 2 evenings, this is because on the 2 evenings we ate there the food from the self service servery was cold. The rep and the restuarant manager explained that this was due to the air-conditioning being on!! The food itself looked ok with a good selection and other guests appeared to be satisfied with it. We decided not to use the hotel for dinner and instead ate at the local restuarants, of which there were plenty and of a good standard. We were always able to get sun beds at the pool with no problem at all. The hotel itself is in an excellent position in a nice quiet resort. It would be difficult to better the rooms at the front of the hotel with regard to location and outlook. Shame about the rooms at the back and the temperature of the food.
hells bells what a carry on!
Catalonia Consul Cala Bona 5sept-19sept 2006 Myself and wife have just returned from our 2 week holiday in Cala Bona staying at the Catalonia Consul. This hotel was the probably the most disorganised and badly run hotels that we have ever stayed in! On arrival we were given a room were the toilet was leaking on the floor and had been doing so for some time! We were moved to another room at the back of the hotel which was acceptable however was wall to wall dust. After staying at this hotel you realise how slack everything is run,the cleaners take 5 mins to do the room,as they just make the beds and replace the towels, they spend no time cleaning the floor, the windows or any part of the balcony or bathroom! The food in the resteraunt is typical spanish hotel amd nothing at all special, after spending 2weeks you realise that the menu repeats itself on a very regular basis, and also the fact they would open only certain areas of the buffet ,you were forever in a queue.I read the reviews on this page before booking and have since found that maybe they are misleading in someways .I think that people who give good reviews probably stayed at the front of the hotel which has a stunning view of the harbour and therefore may cloud there overall perception of how badly this hotel is managed. Love resort as this is third time visit but the Catalonia Consul was not the hotel for us!
Really good hotel in a family resort
We went on a Thomas Cook package. Great flight out with Thomas Cook airlines. We too had a short walk from the minibus to the hotel but it was no bother and flat, and what an advantage having no traffic outside the hotel as its pedestrianised. The rooms are fine and clean, regular cleaning and laundry. Bathrooms are fully marbled. I am a regular hotel user and the food is above average, very wide choice. Full English Breakfast and lots more available on a help yourself basis. Dinner always had a carvery, fresh grill such as steaks/kebabs etc, but the casseroles were always very tasty. Drinks are extra, but 6 euros for a bottle of red (wish English restaurants sold it for £4 a bottle!) was good value but the softs are about 1.5 euros and no coffee after dinner. Resort is lovely, nice safe shallow sandy beach. You can snorkle in waist height and see fish as big as 6" around you, and can go in up to your kneck, look down and see your feet like a swimming pool. They have cleverly built little breakwaters so its almost as safe as a pool. Our teens loved the snorkle trip from the Albatross diving shop next door to the hotel (if only for thr 40mph speedboat ride), also did the caves of drach by catching the glass bottom boat (can't see a lot through the glass once its moving, but its a nice ride!) down to Porto Cristo and then its an easy 15 minute walk. Bars and live music in the evening is of a gentle nature and enjoyable, really enjoyed Diamond Guitars - look out for them. Only two negatives, the trip to Inca market with Thomas Cook had too many pickups, so 3 hours travel for 2 hours at the market (full of fake goods if you fancy a Rolex...), and where did Thomas Cook find the return plane? Well it was a ancient looking Czech Sky Wings 737, virtually every seat was broken, the food was cold, the doors looked wonky, the pilot never spoke, only 3 cabin crew who could not see the overhead which sprang open on takeoff, each seat had 'Fly around Europe for 30 Euros' on it, and I noticed 2 of the airbrakes did not operate on one wing on landing, very relieved to get off! Sorry TC but at your prices per head for a half board weeks holiday surely you can manage a respectable airline.
Excellent Holiday from day 2
Just arrived home from Cala Bona- Consul- Travelled with Thomas Cook, put on a small bus at the airport and went on a 90 min drive to reach the resort. Palma airport is about 40 mins from cala bona- Rep left us after about 30 mins and we were dumped at the end of the road were the driver pointed to a hotel. Great Rep you are Dawn. Its a good job we are frequent travellers cause first timers would have been really lost. An average 3 star hotel - rooms on the front really nice but rooms at the back forget it. We were put in room 211 on the back overlooking the rubbish, which stunk. I caused a fuss with reception and told them i would not stay in that room. They agreed to move us the next day. The next morning - i went to ask for my change of room and first they said they had nothing on the front. so i argued- then they said they had a harbour view room but would cost 20 euros per person per night. I said which room - they said- 216 i said thankyou i will have that one at no further charge. I was quite cross by this time thought. But they said OK and we moved and were not charged. Bargain - Secret be very firm but not aggressive. From then on the holiday was great. Be warned if you can pre book rooms at the front then do cause its not worth the risk. The food was nice, but the resturant is well a CAFE- very bright - like BHS. Entertainment - Rubbish but not needed there are loads of bars in cala bona and just around the corner in Cala Millor. Maid's ok, but must have round brushes and mops cause they miss the corners.. Ha Ha Overall Consul is a nice base camp-- cause there is loads more to do and see than the inside of the hotel. Would go again but would book Harbour View in Advance.
