magnificent view and location
If you are interested in staying close to the historical centre of Valletta and away from the popular tourist area up the coast, the British Hotel is a great place to try if you are not looking for luxury. This is a quirky, old-style hotel located on a quiet side street in the south corner of the historical city. I stayed in a room with windows and a huge terrace overlooking Vittoriosa, Senglea, and the Grand Harbour below. The view is stunning, especially in the raking light of morning and evening. The management was attentive, and... more
Stayed for one night - that was too long
We checked in late at night and were shown to a cold room. The beds were damp to a point of saturation, so we spent the night sleeping on blankets in our clothing. The breakfast was laughably bad, so we cancelled our week's booking and moved on. The proprietor seemed little concerned - "We have lots more guests coming," he said. The British is the worst hotel I have stayed in in over 50 years travelling. The view is stunning, but (from a different perspective) so is the accommodation. Dire.
Un unpolished gem
The British Hotel has an excellent location for those of us who like to stay in Valetta which, in spite of its decay, is a beautiful and exciting city and who want to be close to the bus terminal and at the same time have a great sea view. The back side though is that the we found the hotel filthy and mismanaged. With doors to the balcony and the corridor that did not keep tight the room got very cold and noisy during a storm. Furniture on the balcony blow around and broke in pieces. The staff couldnt care the less. The bathroom had no... more
Yuck!
This place is a dump. The staff were friendly enough, but generally absent. Our room had a view of the harbour but this was the ONLY good thing about our one-night stay here. One of the windows on the teeny balcony was broken. The curtains and the bedspreads in the room were disgustingly filthy--lots of souvenirs from prior occupants. The sheets were too small for the bed so that the smallest movement dislodged them and one was left basically sleeping on the bare mattress. Ugh. I slept in my clothes. The heat was inadequate, but I was... more
Loved the friendly helpful staff
My wife and I have just spent 10 days at the Hotel British in Valletta Malta. From the moment we arrived to our departure we received such warm hospitality from all staff members . Of course the view of the Grand Harbour is wonderful, but it`s the staff that made it for us. Highly recommended , give it a try. Mike and Yoko Reeve.
Great place for people who want more than a beach holiday
We stayed at the British Hotel for a week and were very satisfied. It is very close to the main street in Valletta and above all, close to the bus terminal that takes you pretty much anywhere on the island. We were not interested in a beach holiday or to hang out at the hotel every evening - the British Hotel suited us perfectly. The breakfast seems to be typically Maltese - bread, cheese, ham, cereal, milk, coffee and tea, but there are plenty of restaurants in the neighbourhood that serve cooked breakfast if you prefer that (we never... more
Lots of stairs
While nicely located outside the city walls of Malta, there are very few rooms available by "lift". Our room 217 was six walk-up stories. The reason for their oddball numbering is that 3 very old buildings were combined for this hotel. Due to a strained achilles tendon, we were transfered to single rooms, 118 and 119, on two different floors. The owners are very friendly but this European hotel is particularly bare.
Old world feel
We wanted to find a hotel that fit the flavor of Valletta rather than the usual tourist hotel and found just that with the British Hotel. We spent three nights there. Our room had a balcony with a beautiful view of the Grand Harbor for a very reasonable price. The room was clean, pleasant and included a bath room, though the bath tub was tiny. The price included breakfast and offered bread, cold cereal, juice, cold cuts, cheese, cookies, coffee and tea. The dining room was open to the sea as was the lounge. We had a very pleasant... more
British Hotel
Stayed at the British Hotel in September 2005 Make sure to book a room with balcony and view to the grand Harbour. The location is great (in the center), the rooms are very basic, the breakfast is very very simple, (Toasts & orange juice!). It is a very basic hotel.
Stunning Views and Excellent Service
A short stay at the Hotel British overlooking the stunning Grand Harbour in Valleta is an experience to remember. The hotel is quaint and does not challenge the new breed of "seven stars", but it has seven star staff, six star food and a gallaxy of stars when it comes to a restaurant with a view! This is a quiet intimate hotel that seeks to provide service without cost. They should charge for the Grand Harbour but thats provided free to behold.
