Berlin is truly a Christmas wonderland in December.
Never before have I been anywhere so truly full of Christmas spirit; ice skating rinks in the street, the smell of gluhwein and a smorgasbord of hot food; carollers and Christmas songs; about 40 Christmas markets in all!
What made Berlin even more enjoyable was the hotel we stayed in, Der Alter Feuerwache, in North East Berlin.
Not only was this very reasonably priced, but it was also fairly convenient for the city - just a minute's walk from the tram and then 15 minutes into the centre and the trams go all night every night!.
The staff were excellent - always friendly and ready to help, and spoke fluent English. The breakfast was good, although nothing special.
Der Alter Feuerwache means 'the old fire station' and there were some remnants of the past left behind, including an fireman's outfit in the bar!
The bar itself (and although we did not try the food, it was reasonably priced) was tasteful and beautifully decorated for Christmas - really cosy.
The only point worth noting regarding the restaurant area, is that if you are a vegetarian you will not find much on the menu to choose from (if anything!).
The room was clean and although not spacious, it was adequate with average facilities and a modern bathroom.
All in all the hotel and trip was excellent and I would recommend anyone going to Berlin to stay there.
