We stayed at the Alpenhof as part of Inghams Swiss Classic Tour which was wonderful.
The Alpenhof is in a good situation about 5 minutes walk from the train station. We had a room at the front of the hotel facing the river (quite noisy but in a nice way!) and a lovely mountain view to the left.
The room was well appointed - although was lacking a kettle! Lovely thick cotton robes in the bathroom for your free use and cotton towelling slippers for you to take away!
Rather elaborate light fittings in all the rooms and around the hotel must cost them a fortune in light bulbs!
Food at the Alpenhof is really excellent and the staff are wonderful. Wine is rather pricey at an average £20+ per bottle. Matterhorn view is extra.
The Hotel is almost directly opposite the Sunegga cog train and Rothorn lift. Zermatt itself is wonderful with lots to do. The Gornergrat is a must as is the Kleine Matterhorn with breathtaking views from over 12,000 feet - move slowly the air is thin!
A trip on the Schwarzsee lift will give you cracking views of the Matterhorn which you feel you can reach out and touch. The journey to Zermatt is breathtaking in itself. Loads of shops and restaurants.
I highly recommend the Alpenhof and Zermatt for your holiday destination - you can't fail to be impressed. Don't forget to buy your Swiss Half Price Card to use on the trains and lifts.

This was a comfortable hotel without being anything special. We had a Matterhorn facing rooms which allowed us a glimpse of the mountain between other buildings.The food was somewhat fussy in the evenings, and we ended up eating at local restaurants for a change on several occasions. Service was generally poor , except at reception, and Dinner seemed to take an age. The bar lacked any atmosphere and we seemed to be a nuisance if we wanted a pre dinner drink. The presence of the bath in the middle of the bedroom also took some getting used to ! We loved Zermatt itself although you are in a very isolated position. Wengen and the Bernese Oberland remains my favourite.
