Peniscola is a resort one hour south of Salou that most Brits have probably never heard of, but is a rapidly growing resort popular with the French and Spanish, and an increasing number of Brits. Personally if it was a choice of Peniscola or Salou, I’d pick Peniscola every time. Whereas Salou looks tired and in the 80s, Peniscola is a picturesque resort with lots of bars and restaurants, miles of clean sandy beaches, and is probably just about right early June, or in September when it is less busy.
We flew into Barcelona and caught the train to Benicarlo which was a 2 hour train journey, but we could also have flown into Reus, the same airport that serves Salou. From Benicarlo it was just a 5 minute taxi ride to our hotel. The hotel was excellent, just 100 yards from the beach. There always seems to be some event going on in Peniscola. When we were there they had a fantastic firework display which was one of the best we have seen. We were also able to catch the train to Valencia which is just 1 hour south, so it is an excellent base for sightseeing.
Peniscola is no Benidorm which is a good thing. If you like Salou you will like Peniscola 10 times better, and I’d say that it is a more authentic side or Spain and local life.
