" A short break leaving on 27/12 and... "
Submitted By: Mr J McGill
A short break leaving on 27/12 and returning 31/12.
Brussels has a yearly Christmas fayre which spreads across the city centre and comprises of stalls, old-time fun fair [nothing tacky). The speciality beer stalls are a must visit, as are the restaurants. The Grand Square is brilliant surrounded by bars and cafes and at dark it becomes a living light show. Though I would suggest shopping round for restaurants as around the square they tend to be more expensive.
A visit to the 'little boy of Brussels' is a must albeit just a small statue of a boy peeing! The bar diagonally opposite is great with dozens of speciality beers, each served in its own specific glass, try Kwok its an experience. While warming yourself in front of the log fire you can admire the unusual decor.
The hotel was very good and well positioned. We used the train to get from the airport to Brussels, it was easy and very cheap.
As either a pre or post Christmas break I would definitely recommend it.

The hotel is really well situated for Grand Place, which is the centre of most things. There were plenty of brown bars and quaint cafes nearby which is great if you like Belgian beer. Try Delirium (a bar) which has the Guinness Book of Records award for the most beers in one place, about 2,500, the menu is about 4cm thick! We also visited the Cantillon Brewery (Lemmonier Premetro station) which was informative and had a great tasting afterwards.
I wouldn't recommend going on the open top sightseeing buses. You can get on and off as you please for 24 hours which is great in principle, but we found many of the buses had defective audio commentary jacks, so many people were left not knowing what they were looking at during the tour. One of the buses had so many not working that we were dumped on the side of the road (not even at a stop) and the bus brought along to collect us was so full already that we decided not to continue the tour.
Overall a great city, lots to do, feels safe at nights and a good hotel from which to explore.
