Matina Hotel is, like much accommodation around Greece quite basic. The hotel upon first arrival seemed good and staff were friendly. Myself and a friend stayed Self Catering, and had purchased the holiday at a real bargain price last minute. The Self Catering aspect is... more

Wish I Was Still There... Going Back In September 2009 !!!!
Arrived at the Hotel around 5am and the sun was just emerging from behind the mountains...... Room was average size (adequate for what a room is required for on holiday) and looked out onto a sea view... Pool & Gardens are was massive and very well kept.. Also a jacuzzi and small baby pool....The pool bar chef (Ellias) made wonderful and reasonably priced food from an English breakfast to Greek Salads.... The pool bar staff (an english girl called claire & a greek chap called Becka) were lovely and made us feel at home... The small beach was about 8-10 mins walk and then you can walk a further 5 mins along the beach to the main faliraki beach which is more lively.... Alot of people have moaned about the distance.... My view is that a ten minute walk is just right.... Its not as if its gonna be raining... It was a lovely walk as there is plenty to look at along the way..... The nightlife in faliraki is slightly quieter than it was around 3 years ago.... Many families were put off by the bad press it got but i would definately recommend it for families as there is never a shortage of things to do for everyone... The waterpark is 5Euro from the main centre and it costs 20 euro for adults and 15euro for children.... Great value for money as you are there all day and food is priced reasonably there.... There is plenty of places to shop in faliraki, ranging from cheap and cheerful market shops to more expensive designer shops.... Restaurants are all around you but i would highly reccommend "Charlie X"....... We ate there every night for 7 nights as no where compared in price or quality... We had a three course meal for 30euros.... That was for BOTH of us...... Please go there, you wont be disapointed...... Ask claire from the matina pool bar as she knows charlies well... it was her that recommended to us.... I will be going back to greece in late september as i had the best time there.... It has everything you need... Gauranteed sunshine, excellent pool, nice rooms, good food, friendly staff... The list goes on...
A relaxing hotel with friendly staff
It takes about 30 mins from the airport in a taxi costing 20 euros. The rooms are small & basic with balconies, there were 2 hob rings to cook with but no utensils to cook with, fridge, tv & air con which was well needed in the heat. We went half board & the evening meals you could only choose between 2 dishes. The food was ok. Breakfast was very basic. The pool bar food was excellent, large portions & friendly staff this opens a 10am & they do a massive full english for less than 5 euros, alcoholic drinks were reasonably priced too.The pool is big & well kept with sun loungers spaced around it. The walk to the bars & restaurants was about 15-20 mins on an unbusy road which was a nice walk after a large meal. The beach was sandy & long & took about 15-20 mins to get there but well worth the walk . There are many restaurants to eat & drink in along the beach area & the harbour does daily boat trips.Overall it was a great holiday & if your not fussed about luxury than this is the place for you
Excellent service. A pleasure to of done business
After arriving at the hercules hotel just across the road from the matina late on a saturday night to find out it was closed it was with trepidation we went to the matina. Well what can i say about the matina? Yes it is a bit of a hike into town but the staff at the hotel were first class especially the manager who helped us out of a very big muddle and was nothing but very helpful for the rest of the week. Would definately recommend.
Great pool and great staff
We arrived at the hotel quite late at night and they checked us in in a small but comfy room. In the morning, we've noticed we have a very poor view, we were looking at a very arid and not pleasing field... We asked the receptionist to move us, as we were staying for two weeks. So he did, but he told us that we would have to move two days before departure as the room was booked by someone else. We agreed and had a lovely room overlooking the pool. At the end of our stay we moved for one night to another room, even better that the one we've spent our holiday in. The rooms, all of them, are not too big, but comfortable, have a balcony, where we usually had dinner, have AC and good beds (one double bed, not two small ones). The location of the hotel ... good location, a little far from the beach, but the pool compensates. For transport we hired a scooter for 7 days and had a blast! We also hired a car for a day (they can usually give it to you the night before at 8pm) and saw the whole island, including the amazing beaches at Prasonissi. The food was not the best, we had just the breakfast at the hotel and it was not much variety. At dinner you usually had to choose between two dishes. They have a BBQ dinner every week which is fun to attend. The best thing about the hotel were the pools: a big swimming pool and a small whirlpool. The least we liked that it was so far from the beach: about 10-15 minutes walk.
Small rooms, not bad facillities
I spent a summer working at this hotel and had a great time. However in my opinion the hotel has small hot rooms but the outside space at the hotel is ok. Nice pool and outside bar. Good fun staying and working here however needs and update and is a taxi ride from the nightlife rather than a walk.
A great holiday, I am going back...
I needed a quiet week away after a contract ended, and I ended up with a really memorable holiday, walking, swimming, and 2 for 1 drinks in the club area of Faliraki (4 shot Whisky cocktail for 5Euros). This was the second time I have been on the island-I went back because I like the people) The Matina is family run with love, and it seems the family are related to or know everyone on the island. Although the Faliraki beach is fantastic, it was so quiet at the end of tourist season that I used the large and deep pool at the hotel. The hotel cooking is so nice, you will have to watch your weight! Try the salad! The Hotel also recommended the Nectar restaurant nearby and I had two unforgetable meals there with Lamb roast with rice and potatoes and giros with lamb, chips, rice and yoghurt..wow! (As with the Matina, one course will be enough for two days...). The Matina rooms have simple cooking facilties for stewing, frying etc. and there is a fridge. ALL the Supermarkets are expensive and it is better to bring dried snacks, soups, noodles etc. or eat out (big families should try to negotiate!). Eggs can be cheap. The view from the rooms is great, and the gardens are beautiful. Watch out for your toes in the grass off the paths, as Rhodes has many thorn bushes and it seems to get everywhere! Club Street in Falariki is just as crazy every night, and I mean EVERY NIGHT, but the Hotel Matina is far enough away that you can only just hear the music, if you try. (Hi! to all at Jimmy's bar, ) A special surprise, apart from the fact you were treated as one of the family, was the short walks up the mountain and round the mountain to the bay where they filmed the "The Guns of Navaronne". A perfect blissful bay. In the summer months you will find the usual holiday rush, I am told. For myself it was a fun, blissfully peaceful holiday. I am weeping now because they have shut until May, but I will be there in May! Holidays are becoming so expensive and uncertain, you must be careful what you spend-The Matina is an ideal place to trim your budget but still get a family atmosphere and fantastic food and night life! TRY IT!!! Hi! to all at the Matina, including Matina herself and her husband, there son Emmanuallo and Mike and Mike, and George the IT guy (free Wireless internet!!) , Spiros the late night man who rides the trains that go everywhere around Faliraki part-time. I have noticed there have been some bad comments about the Hotel and the beach? Everyone knows the Faliraki beach is great so I am confused! It is just like the Carribean! If you go in the peak season take a wash up cloth and tea towel, to wipe your room as you go as staff will be worked off their feet by spoilt tourists! My mobile charger plugged in directly through an 3 to 2 pin adapter at 230/240v as in England. You can buy adapters from machines at Gatwick.
Thanks for the good vacation
first I can not confirm what "cat567" desribed, because we enjoyed our holiday in hotel matina very much. We know before that this is not a 5star hotel but a clean and familial hotel in greece and therefore we paid the right price. We like the beautiful pool area very much and also the silence for sleeping. That was the reason why we booked the hotel outside of city of faliraki, because if I like to have party I can go there. And also our room was clean and the changing of towels everzy two or three days is enough, or do you change your towels at home every day ? So I can advise hotel matina to everybody who want to have a good hotel for a good price. See you next year in hotel matina
It was really terrible!
I did not expect that our vacations will be so terrible. Very dirty hotel, very rude room service and manager. I agree with ralph1234 – everything was like he described – nobody wanted to change towels and beds, clean the room and bathroom. When the manager was asked about the clean towels, he answered that it should be done 1 time in three days. Finally, our towels were changed 1 time in 7 days. Is it acceptable? The manager thinks – yes! No soap, no shampoo, no TV, very far from the city center, from beach. It was not very far from one beach where was impossible to stay, because of smell, dirty sound, and unpleasant environment. Terrible! I could not advice this hotel to anybody! Please keep your money, do not book this hotel!
Terrible thank god for the pool side bar and lovely girl who worked there
We stayed at the hotel in the summer of 2008 and were shocked to say the least. Our beds weren’t changed once in the week, we had to ask/go get our own clean towels, and our room was cleaned twice and both times the cleaner didn’t knock just opened the door and cleaned while we were sleeping so woke us all up (at 10 AM so not exactly late). It was very grubby. We also planed to go self catered but sadly the facilities they offered were no were near adequate to cater for our selves so ended spending far more money than planed as we had to eat out for every meal. One thing I can praise this hotel for is the poolside bar, a really helpful and fantastic girl worked behind the bar, the food was cheap and very nice a true life saviour. The “supermarket” was also terrible. The pool is nothing like the photos and is in fact a lot smaller. The hotel is also to far from Faliraki to walk in in the heat so taxis had to be got every night not the place to stay if you want to be in the action and not very pretty if you want a restful holiday. The final nail on the head was the last day, we got kicked out of our rooms a DAY before our flights as they had booked us in for a day before we arrived, they then charged us to keep it for another day, then when we went to hand our keys back handed us a bill for the air con, we hadn’t been told anything and the remote was in the room as if it was included in the price, we pointed this out and tried to reason with them, they reacted by saying if we didn’t pay up another 100 euros they would call the police on us. So naturally we paid and left. I have nothing good to say about this hotel except they have a lovely girl working at the pool bar and decent food at the pool bar, our rep Mick (not part of the hotel) was also grate.
Best Holiday Ever
I stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend in July 2008 and we had the best holiday ever. We got a taxi from the airport to the hotel which cost us 20 Euro's - not unreasonable. We checked into our room and were pleasently surprised. The room was small but had a large double bed, wardrobe, dressing table, two bedside table's, Kichenette (two rings, sink, kettle, pans, fridge with freezer) and bathroom which was a decent size. Only point that i could fault the bathroom on was that there is nowhere to hang the shower head so you have to hold on to it - we did have an accident and water went everywhere - hardly a big deal though. We were given new bedsheets and towel's and foot mat every day bar one. Our apartment backed onto the pool so we had a lovely view. You also have to pay an extra 7 Euro's per night for air con, although if you buy a full weeks worth you get it for 5 Euro's a night. I think this is common to have to pay extra, still a pain though when you have already forked out for the holiday. The pool area was gorgeous. Loads of sunbed's and although there are 80 apartments the pool area is always quiet and there is always room. The pool is large but quite deep; the shallowist part is 1.15m maybe not ideal if you have small children although there is another smaller pool and a jacuzzi. There is a nice pool bar by the side of the pool which is reasonably priced and there is a variety of food for sale. Within the hotel there is a small shop which you can buy amentites from such as drinks, food and Lilo's - well worth 5 Euro's. There are also two computers with internet access, an inside bar, inside restaurant and seating area next to the pool table. The interior of the hotel is nice, although maybe the front desk could be updated, and the exterior is painted a funny green and cream colour, would be much nicer white, but hey whats a bit of paint. The hotel is situated out of town, so it is nice and quiet. It takes around 15 minutes to walk to the centre and although there is a beach closer we always walked to the main beach. The route down though is a good one. Well lit roads, no small alleys and although wide, the roads are relatively quiet. The walk was not a problem for us as we enjoyed having the hotel in a smaller area, but it may be a problem if you had young children or were elderly. I don't know how much a taxi would cost but i can't imagine too much. Overall we had a great time at the Matina and wish that we were still there. We were aprehensive booking as i couldn't find any reviews for it anywhere but i am pleased that we to the gamble! Note to other guests; Please leave some more reviews of this hotel.
