Matina Hotel is, like much accommodation around Greece quite basic. The hotel upon first arrival seemed good and staff were friendly.
Myself and a friend stayed Self Catering, and had purchased the holiday at a real bargain price last minute. The Self Catering aspect is rather useless apart from the fact that there is a fridge in the room. Even though I would have preferred a better cooking facility, I soon realised that the quality and value of the food being served at the poolside bar was excellent. For example, Full breakfast £2. Drinks were cheap also, as is usually the case in Greece. So even if you are watching the pennies, I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
The pool area was excellent and probably the best thing about the hotel. Quite a large, well-maintained, safe pool that is surrounded by plenty of sun loungers etc, with a small landscaped area and the pool bar (which is very good). It is a very relaxed hotel, and you won't tend to get large groups of young people. Yes, the clientele is mixed, but all pretty quiet and looking to relax - a friendly environment.
The staff I have to say were excellent. The Manager (Manolis) is very helpful and will do his best to help you out. The bar man, whom surfaces circa. 6pm each evening is great. There are a few small supermarkets close by which stock pretty much anything you'll need. There is a 5-a-side football court at the hotel (which we'd have loved to used but found the weather just too hot, so took a cold beer instead!).
The beach is great and is about 450m walk down small gradient. The town centre is quite crowded and lively at night but there's so much to do on the island that there's something for everyone. Try the night boat to Lindos, the coach tour of the island (fantastic) including winery, ruins, meal etc. or the Rodos Town at night.
