Wonderful Vacation
My husband, mother and father stayed from August 26th-Sept.2nd we had a wonderful time. Lets clear up the food issue it is very good, the buffet and the Mexican and Italian are very good and we could not fiqure why people write the food is bad that is and absolute lie.We have very good restaurants here in Atlanta and compared to some the food rates the same. We did not come with a tour group and we were treated royally. My husband and I had a oceanfront room that was beautiful and the terrace would have held at least 30 people, very very clean. The staff was great, the drinks could use a little more kick but if you throw in a tip you get a stronger drink.(smile)don't be so cheap people.Maid service superb.(100 pesos a day) which is about two dollars. Would highly recommend the Viva. It was my parents first time at and all-inclusive they loved it and will be returning for Xmas. I would recommend anyone going to join Wyndham by request you auto matically get upgrades for free all over the world.Just to mention the pool area is very crowded the beach is a better option and much nicer.
Nice place but a bit boring!
Stayed from August 20 for 14 nights. The resort is clean and very well maintained with lovely flower beds and a fountain housing a family of turtles. The food was pretty bad and not at all the healthy spread I was expecting. I guess the Americans eat cakes for breakfast and stodgy pancakes with syrup plus the juice tasted artificial and both my son and I had constant tummy problems and a sickly feeling that persisted throughtout our stay. The cocktails were a huge let down. I know that they cant be served in glasses because of the danger of broken glass around the pool, but they were slopped into a plastic beaker and if you were luck you got a slice of pineapple or lemon on the edge of the glass! There's not much to do in the hotel itself. My 12 year old son was bored rigid. The organised activities consisted of aerobics in the pool and dance lessons which were the same old routine every day and after the first week it became boring to watch. The activities were very badly organised, you had to rely on catching someone at the pool carrying a clip board and shouting in Spanish in order to stand a chance of knowing what was going on. The beach is the best place to sunbathe. The sand is a pain as it blows everywhere and sticks to your suncream. The kitesurfers are well worth a watch as some of them are well fit! My son romped in the waves most of the time, but you need to watch out for the kitesurfers as they sometimes come in really close to the bathers. We had a hurricane alert on Tuesday. Hurricane Frances was 200 miles out off the Atlantic coast. I was very impressed with how well the staff coped and their preparation made me think about how nothing ever gets done in Britain until it happens! The hotel had the palm trees sandbagged, they removed all the loungers and chairs and closed the beach. They taped up the windows and removed all coconuts and loose branches form the trees. The staff shone as they organised games in the bar and generally kept us all amused. We all sat watching the huge waves but sadly some of the trees were uprooted despite their best efforts. After the crisis passed they were quick to return everything to normal and you would never have known anything had happened.
Windsurfing/Kitesurfing Haven
Our vacation was from August 20th to the 27th. If you love sports that include the ocean and the wind, this is the place for you. The oceanfront room that we had was clean and the room service was excellent. The weather was in the eighties all day and all night. The beach had great sand and never-ending waves. The winds had the kite surfers, wind surfers, and catamarans flying around the ocean. No snorkeling or scuba on premises. You had to fight for a chair around the pool. Most people reserved them by six in the morning. Not enough shade but, they were working on this problem. Low-end liquor but, if you can exist on a Pina Colada or a Presidente Beer, you will be fine. If you are used to good food, you will not be happy with this resort. The meat, eggs, milk, orange juice, etc.. are not top notch. There are not many activities and those that do happen are not organized well. In summation, if you just want a great place for wind/water sports, you can't go wrong.
Great People, Great Fun! 8/11/04-8/16/04
Well after reading some of the reviews I thought WOW this is going to be a trip from hell. I was taken care of really well by the people who work at the hotel. They treated us with respect and they were very kind. The only problem was the food. I read a lot of the reviews that said don't try this and dont go there. Well I thought I was going the safe route by sticking to the pizza. What a mistake that pizza had me going to the bathroom so much I barely got out to see any of the country. Okay that may be a stretch, but it did give me the "willies" for the bulk of the days I was there. Okay on to the positive experience... Upon arrival we were greeted to music in the airport lobby that was very entertaining to say the least. We laughed with them using the limited spanglish I had. One thing I did not prepare for enough (not that you can anyway) was the humidity. That was rough to say the least the continual layer of sweat from getting off the plane to getting back on the plane was lets just say an experience (Don't ever remember changing shirts quite and often as that week. Great Beach! Did I mention the Beach is Awesome with a capital A! Well lets just say that's what you come for. The water sports are nice, many people were laying out topless which was a bit different than what we're use to in the states. Memo to all Euros: If your daughter is between the age of 0 and 18 please remind her to keep on her bikini top... Or at the least to take one with them on the trip. Other than the food this place was simply incredible...
Nice, clean, fun place to relax.
We arrived from the airport and our luggage arrived approximately 5 minutes later to our room. The staff are friendly and always willing to help. (Although "Right away" seems to mean in a bit so don't hold your breath for anything to happen quickly!) The food in all of the restaurants was well above a typical buffet level and the a la carte menus were varied and very good! The a la carte restaurants require long pants but my husband got in with long walking shorts. The kids club was great for my 6 year old, but they do not keep a close eye on them, better for kids that are good at following directions and that wouldn't run off on their own. Lots of activities for both the kids in the club and for the adults. Activities included salsa & meringue lessons, spanish lessons, aerobics in and out of the water, darts, water volleyball and nightly shows from the staff. Some of the shows were better than others but hey, these staff seem to work from sun up to sun down and do a great job! The excursions were a bit pricey when you have a family of 4 but we met some other people who simply took a cab to local towns instead and they enjoyed themselves also. The trip to Puerto Plata was fun but the rum company was just a walk above their packaging plant and the cigar factory was instad a couple of men in a souvenir shop. Both places were cheap tho for souvenirs and especially the Rum (About $3 for a large bottle). It also inlcuded a trip to an amber museum (cute but expensive) and to a local fort (great for photo opportunities) The hotel does bring in local craftsmen on Sunday night so you can do some shopping just make sure to barter. You could usually get suff for at least 15-30% of what they were originally asking. The beach is VERY rough and windy, our kids couldn't go in the water alone (although some parents had no problem leaving their kids in there). It is great for kite surfing and wind surfing but not for swimming (bobbing the water is fun though!) Overall a nice place to relax. People were going out early morning to put their towels around the pool to get a good spot so don't be surprised when there are no chairs left after breakfast. The Viva is new and are making changes as they can. They constructed 3 more shade unbrellas around the pool as they saw the need for some shade. Rooms are sparse but enough for what you need. Have fun if you go and if you have any specific questions feel free to email me - and have fun!
Fun - Excellent Staff and Service!
We just got back last night from "Viva Wyndham Tangerine". We were there for 6-days/nights. I wanted to get my review in as soon as possible. This place has the hardest working staff I've seen. The activities/entertainment staff worked from early morning to after midnight some nights, often hanging out with the guests and dancing in the nightclub. They go "all out" to make sure that you have a good time and really try to include everyone in the daily activities. It seemed that most of the staff was able to communicate in multiple languages and the nightly shows were always impressive because of the fact that they were multilingual - very talented people! Although we don't have children, the kids portion of the shows were very cute and the kids seemed to really enjoy them. The rooms were very clean and always had plenty of fresh towels (Sophia is great)! The food was ok. I'm a pretty finicky eater and was still able to find something to eat at every meal. Others seemed to enjoy the food more than I did. I do highly recommend the italian restaurant. The key to the buffet is to arrive when they open for each meal...the food is 10-times better when it's fresh. Don't wait until it's been there for awhile. If you're there for "Domincan Night", ask for the "Dulce de Coco" - it's a dessert...the best coconut candy I've every had. Many of the guests didn't seem to realize that the italian restaurant was also the "snack bar" during the day (only italian at night) and serves made-to-order hamburgers, hotdogs and sandwiches with french-fries...very good! The bartenders and waiters are also sooo attentive and incredibly nice (Jesus - at the pool-bar and sometimes nightclub - is really awesome and nice). Although there were very few Americans, my husband and I were able to meet some really great people from New York and New Jersey (hello - Danielle/Chris, Nadim/Diana, Teresa/Jimmy, Luis/Maritsa). We wanted to meet others too, but we only speak English/Spanish... many italians, germans and french guests that don't speak much English or Spanish! Cabarete is a nice little town that's a 10-minute walk down the beach. If you kite-surf or want to...this is the 3rd best beach in the world for it! Lots of kite-surfers and wind-surfers! The beach is nice although not the "white-sand" that can be seen throughout the rest of the carribean. It was nice and powdery and not rocky, so it was ok. If you walk down towards Cabarete, it's a little wider and a little prettier even...but it's just fine at the resort. I also really recommend going to "Ocean World" (book at the hotel though for a better deal). It's a great place to go and swim with or encounter dolphins, sea lions and even nurse sharks. It's one of the best times I've ever had. It's hard to believe or describe how awesome it is. Don't miss out. Don't jump to conclusions, when you first arrive. We had been to other places before (Cancun, Puerto Rico, Keys, etc.) and were a little dismayed upon arrival, but pleasantly suprised at how much fun we had at Viva Wyndham Tangerine! EXCELLENT value! GREAT people!
The Absolute Greatest Place to stay in DR
Let's start by saying I know the country pretty well, seeing as I studied abroad there two years back. Two friends and my self came back to see as much as we could in a week. We absolutely love Cabarete, and booked this place last minute after discovering it on travelocity. I have to say the was the nicest place I have ever stayed at in the entire country, and believe me I have been everywhere. The staff was very friendly and accomodating and the resort was everything and more. My friends and I were fortunate to get VIP wrist bands, which entitles you to a beach front room, and a more attentive staff, look into VIP status, it's worth it. The food at the restaurants was okay, but I think I preferrend the buffet. They season the food pretty well, and a huge variety of things. DO NOT EAT THE CHEESE. Dominican cheese has a funky taste, don't even attempt it. Yes the beach is windy, but still very beautiful. The staff cleaned our room twice a day, and made sure our fringe was always stocked with soda's and water (free of charge). I could go on and on about how lovely this place is! In short, if you are planning on going to Cabarete, this is the place to stay. A lot of Europeans vacation there as well, which was an added plus for me!
We will be booking to go again!
Having read numerous reviews and deciding to book to stay for a week at the Tangerine, needless to say we were unsure. How wrong we were!. Immediately upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of punch, and escorted to our room. Our luggage was with us within minutes, smiles all the way from every staff member we encountered. Our room was NEXT to the tennis courts, they have obviously solved the sewer problem when it rains, for it rained twice and we were fine!. Lovely spotless room, couldn't find fault with it. 'La Bahia' was superb and clean, with every imaginable food and fruit on offer, along with fruit juices, Pepsi and iced water. The cleanliness at this hotel is really something to sample to be believed, and of course it goes without saying that we were not troubled with any tummy ailments whatsoever. We have only been home a few days and already we are pining to go back!. The staff are fantastic, everyone is so welcoming and friendly and you are greated with "Hola!" at every opportunity!. Great for kids too, our 8 year-old had a brilliant time. Lovely beach also. We cannot rate this place highly enough!
The best
A three friends and i stayed at Viva Tangerine for a week (4/06/2004 - 11/06/2004). It was wonderful and the best holiday so far; a week was way too short for us we didn't want to leave. Check-in: This was very quick. We were offered cocktails and were immediately shown to our rooms. There was no need for us to have packed a change of clothes in our hand luggage as the suitcases arrived at the room 3 mins after us. The food: There were three restaurants; the Mexican and Italian, which required guests to make reservations, and the buffet restaurant. We didn't enjoy the food at the Mexican because the menu was limited. The Italian was very nice, we all enjoyed our food. The buffet was good because everynight there was a theme, and if you dont like what they were offering there was always a little corner reserved for the usual dishes including lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, drinks and ice cream. There was also a snack bar where you can get food (hot dogs, burgers, pizzas, drinks etc.) 24hr, and also a 24hr bar. Someone mentioned the alcohol was watered down, i dont think thats true. As some might know caribbean rums are very strong, there is a joke about the local brew which they say you can run your motobike on because of the alcohol content. Entertainment: The nightly shows were very entertaining and the shows are open to all age groups. I took part in most of the dailey activities, which included water aerobics, salsa and meringue lessons, volley ball on the beach and lots of other competitions between guests. Plablo, Teresa, Adriana, Franklin, Alex, and all the other entertainment staff just made out holiday more special. Staff: The staff were all very friendly and would do their best to assist you. They all had a smile on their faces. Rooms: We had two adjoinig rooms which we requested directly by emailing the hotel. They were very spacious and on the first floor with balconies overlooking the pool, beach and entertainment area. As most people mentioned the storage space in the bathroom was miminal, but we didn't mind because we kept our cleansing products on the dressing table. We also had cable television with over 100 channels, which we didn't watch because we were always out, but it would be good for families with kids. The rooms, were clean, towels changed, and the mimibar stocked dailey. We also left a tip for the maid and other staff when we left. Pool and Beach: The pool is accessible to all age groups starting with children as young as 4yrs where the water would reach below their knee, 6-12yrs then 4ft-7ft. Of course all children should be assisted in the pool although there are lifeguards present. The sea was very rough and windy as that part of the island is the Atlantic Ocean. Ideal for windsurfing, kitesurfing etc. We appreciated the breeze because it took a bit of the heat off the sun's rays. If you are planning to sunbathe a very high factor sun cream is best. We found the poolside best to sunbathe because the wind blew up the sand on the beach. Everywhere was just kept exceptionally clean. Execursions: We would reccomend the Monster Truck Safari as this takes you out of the town and brings you in the countryside to show you how the typical Dominicans live. Take some sweets or pens, pencils or books to donate to the kids. The Ocean World trip was also very enjoyable; they offer a dolphin encounter or to swim with the dolphins. Food and drinks are all included. The are others which are offered by Thomson and can be discussed or booked with the rep at the hotel. Money: I disagree with the majority of people who recommends visitors to take american dollars. Although this is widely acceptable, the change are given back in DRPeso which can be short changed. I recommend visitors from the UK to take £sterling with them or change their currency at home. The £sterling has a higher exchange rate which doubles the American rate. Also, the exchange rates are higher outside the hotel. Food and drinks are quite cheap to by although we didn't have any need to eat outside the hotel. Cabarete which is the main town is about 15 mins walk along the beach from the hotel or 5 mins (DR150:£2.10) by cab. Lots of clubs/restaurants and good night life. As you can see from what i have written, if you took the time to read it, this holiday was the BOMB!!!! and we all would definately, absolutely, positively, go back. If anyone has any queries you can email me at cj@gorriewhitson.co.uk. And no i do not work or have any connections with the Hotel. ;@
Great Place
Went to the Viva Tangerine with apprehension after reading all the comments. Arrived at the hotel at 3pm and greeted with a cocktail and booked in within 5 mins, the room was good, small but very clean, bathroom large and airy, but as mentioned not a lot of storage space, but hey who lives in the room for long other that to sleep! The room was kept clean and drinks refilled every day, and we made friends with the maid and left her 100 pesos each day (about $2) and for this each day we came back to a different sculpture made out of towels!! The hotel was clean wherever you went and the staff very polite and helpful. The food was good and lots of choice. We ate at the Mexican which was ok but was very disappointed with the Italian, this was the only meal that we did not eat and the service was poor too, but other than this we ate well all week. The entertainment was average but the reps were brilliant. The beach was lovely but as mentioned it was very windy so we did not use it very often. Also as mentioned there was not a lot of shade around the pool, which meant at the height of the day we had to sit in the bar, shame!! Found the drinks a little weak as all local brew, but the different cocktails were good. Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone, but a week is long enough otherwise its gets a bit claustrophobic.
