Vedema Hotel

The Vedema was recommended to me by our travel agent for the Santorini leg of our honeymoon. I had requested the best accomodations that she could find since this was, after all, a honeymoon. Unfortunately, the Vedema was very disappointing. The staff was friendly and tried to be very accomodating, but they were limited in what they could do. I chose the Vedema due to my lack of familiarity with Santorini and its association with the Starwood Luxury Collection. Poor choice, especially given the price The staff was very friendly, but the actual service was mediocre, especially compared with what is typical in Asia. This must be one of the few resorts on the island without a caldera view and the beach is an inconvenient shuttle ride away. This hotel may have once been a luxury property; however, it was a very long time ago. In fairness, the staff is very friendly and professional; nevertheless, they cannot compensate for the shortcomings. The facilities are basic, range of services offered marginal and the dining facility was grossly understaffed. The breakfast buffet was cold because the buffet warming device did not work. We were looking forward to a nice relaxing stay at the Vedema, however for a hotel of this price range, we were disappointed. Major problems were with our room: Front door was not adjusted properly and hit the floor, only allowing it to open half way. Our bathroom sink leaked, causing the whole bathroom floor to become slick. These problems existed when we first got our room and due to short staffing were not fixed until late the following day. My family stayed at the Vedema in late August 2006. We really liked it. Having read the reviews, I understood that the hotel is isolated and far away from Fira and Oia, so we planned for that. With 3 kids, it was nice not to have to deal with the crowds all the time and to have a place to retreat to after exploring the island. We just got back from our trip to Santorini and to Mykonos. We stayed at the Vedema first, for four nights. The hotel grounds are very pretty, it has a little village feel to it with cobblestone streets between the villas. The rooms are large - we had a small kitchen area which had a sink and mini bar that we used to keep our own drinks cold, a living room area, a bedroom and bath, with a large veranda. I like others, was very hesitatant after reading the miserable reviews on this website. However, in my opinion, they were written by disgruntled people who are probably extremely hard to please. My boyfriend and I stayed at the resort for four nights in early August. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, as well as hard-working. The resort is NOT on a cliff like Fira or Oia, nor is it on a beach, so don't expect to see that. We could see the water from our room and were pleased with the room.
