Great place apart from the moaning English
Upon arrival presented with a clean reception with friendly receptionist. Pool area lovely and rooms excellent. Travelling with friends and Medinland had promised adjoining rooms but the hotel explained as they are only small they cannot always honour this but managed to move us next door to our friends as we both had 2 yr olds 2 days after we arrived, they explained that they have told Medinland several times not to offer this but had spoken to others that had also been oferred this service by Medinland. The staff were friendly and bar open from 10am till 11pm daily. The biggest problem was the moans that came form some of the english guests and I was ashamed to be english, If you go abroad then why should you expect bloody sausage and chips every night or jacket potato, you are abroad live a little. Every night the grill had either Chicken, Liver, Veal, Sea Bass, Pork Chops or Steak and then they had Paellea, different savory rices, veg etc etc. The food was good and I have eaten at 4/5* hotels around England and the world that have not provided better. Breakfast, again once you got past the moaning english that they did not have PG Tips you could have cold meats followed by Sausage, Bacon, Eggs, Beans etc etc and yoghurts and fruit. In our party was 4 adults and 2 children aged just over 2 years and we all managed to create ourselves a 3/4 course meal everynight however some seemed to think that if their children did not have chips every meal they may not live much longer. Dessert was good as well, cake, fruit, Ice Cream etc. The hotel is only small and they are still learning but for the price paid you could not fault the food, rooms, drink and location.
good value
We stayed at these apartments fo a week 17th to 24th may 2007. Its a small complex, family run, nicely presented and clean. If you go there without high expectations, you will be pleasantly surprised. if you go expecting 5 star luxury, you'll be a bit dissapointed! Its aimed more at couples than families, theres nothing for children to do, but for couples its great! plenty of sunbeds, free as well. the two storey apartments are spacious, a bit dated, but clean, and if anything is missing, the reception are very helpfull. The pool is clean and most days we had it to ourselves or just one or two other people. Close by, there is a big shopping centre with about 15 different restaurants to choose from. If you get a bad meal here, then you would be very very unlucky. prices are excellent too, most main meals are about 8euro's!! we liked the trattoria best. We booked this resort and flights through "on the beach". it is extremely good value, and if you want a peaceful week away in the sun with no noise and no hassle, then this is for you. If you want more going on, i would reccomend a resort in Peurta del carmen.
great value , loved it
Firstly we would like to thank jaspera for the accurate review written about Playa Pocillos Appartments. We can only really agree with his review and to add our thoughts. We arrived late and yet were in our appartment within 2 mins of a brief phone call, using a number that was left on the front of reception that was clearly marked. The gentleman at the end of the phone was very helpful and told us where the key to our appartment was. and were absolutely delighted with our appartment, which was a real plus to the start of our holiday. The appartment was clean, large and very good value for money. Just a few small points: it is a quiet resort, anyone looking for a lively night life then this may not be for you! We also noticed how close alot of the dearer hotels were to the appartment, especially the Bearitz Playa hotel. Eating out can be as cheap or expensive as you want, we found a great spanish owned restaurant that does the most amazing fish paella called Cabaillto del Ma, this was a 10 minute walk from the complex (look for the Real Madrid flag). We enjoyed it that much that we will be returning again for another cheap holiday sometime soon.
Okay but....
Just arrived back from the Pocillos Playa. Must say the hotel is spotlessly clean, the rooms are great and very modern, however I wouldn't say this is a four star hotel!!! Food was okay some days whilst on other days it was pretty awful. We found that the lunch time menu was usually more appealing. One of the problems we encountered was some food wasn't labelled or labelled incorrectly, one day a dish was labelled as pork but turned out to be liver in a peppercorn sauce (not good for anyone who doesn't like liver). Problems too waiting for food to be topped up e.g. they didn't start cooking another batch of steak until the first batch had gone, hence you then had to wait until it was cooked or choose something else. Also found some food to be too salty. There were problems most days with the drinks dispensers in the dining room (not working) so you often had to trudge across the room to get a drink. The bar also ran out of Vodka and Gin, glasses and plastic cups. Pizza was available from 5.30 - 6.30pm. but you had to be on the ball to get a piece. The staff were very nice but in short supply, only ever saw two waiting staff in the dining room and only one on the bar, to be honest they worked their cotton socks off. Anyone with children could also have a problem, during our week at the Pocillos there were no icecreams available other than at meal times in the dining room, no crisps or snacks other than the daily pizza hour. Entertainment - none to be honest! Outside of the hotel I found Lanzarote great, loved it. Lots of lovely beaches in the north of the island, infact loved all resorts Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca and Puerto Calero is well worth a visit (lovely marina). Hired a car for 2 days from Cabrera Medina (next door to Mucky Duck 2) for 50 euros, this was approximately 25 euros cheaper than the other car hire companies. Visit Mucky Duck 2 down by the beach (just on from the Spar), Chris the barman is great, plus lots of good bars up in Carmen. Would I go to the Pocillos again, probably not, but for what we paid for this holiday I guess I shouldn't grumble too much.
Spot on
Had a fantastic time. Staff are outstanding especially Maria (waitress) and the bar staff. Place was spotless and room cleaned daily. Food was on the whole pretty good. The pool area is lovely although the pool was freezing cold. Gym and kids club a disappointment . But this is well priced and excellent value for money. My kids had a great time and the whole place had a friendly atmosphere. I would definatly come again at this price.
Great place for families
Los Pocillos apartments in Matagorda 25/3/07 1 weeks holiday with husband, son, daughter in law and grand daughter (aged 3). Had a lovely time. Weather warm, but a wee bit cloudy. Windy most days, but thats what to expect in Lanzarote apparently. This was our first time here and we will be back. Apartments were clean. Maid service every day except Wednesday. Child friendly. We had two 1 bedroom apartments and our granddaughter could go easily between us. Near to the town centre, 5 mins walk, but not in amoungst any noise. There were pleanty of bars, and eating places in the centre, but at this time of year, it was relatively quiet, but not too quiet. The airport is 10 minutes away, but this did not trouble us on holiday (the noise was minimal) We hired a car for 2 days. Enough to see all the intersting sights, and visit the beaches. Ola, Puerta Bahia and La Dolce Vita were all wonderfull restuarants, highly recomended. Service in all was wonderfull and the food great. All near the port at Porta del Carmen. Took the car to Timanfaya, wonderful and worth a visit, even if only to see the camels. Our grandaughter loved this. Looking forward to next spring, for another possible/probable visit.
Get what you pay for
If you choose to stay at the Playa Pocillos apartments in Matagorda Lanzerote you will in my opinion get what you paid for. I have just returned from a weeks stay at these apartments, having paid about £80 for the week I half expected a complete dive, not the case although it is certainly not the Ritz. The complex is in a little tired and could probably do with a lick of paint here and there and the cleaners could do with a lesson in cleaning under things as there was a pile of hair under my bed which certainly didn’t belong to me. The heated swimming pool was well bracing to say the least and I would go as far as saying it was on the brink of being arctic (i.e. no heat). Visitors to these apartments need to be aware of its proximity to the airport; the apartments are 2 streets away from the end of the runway. This is not necessarily as bad as it sounds no planes fly in at night and after the first day you really don't notice them if you choose to stay in the complex all day im sure they may get on your nerves. The apartment complex is a little way out of matagorda up a slight hill tucked away in a residential area. Not ideal but not the worst. All in all I would say that these apartments are ok not the Ritz but not faulty towers, I enjoyed my stay but I never spend a lot of time in hotels/apartments
playa pocillos apts
we stayed here over new year and we were pleasantly surprised how nice the place was seeing as it was so cheap , the rooms were clean and a reasonable size and the pool area was well kept although the pool was a little bit cool in january but the kids didn,t seem to mind. its about a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and restaurants/pubs or a 5-10 minute taxi ride into puerta del carmen . we ate in the local restaurants mostly and we thought the best one was los brisas(i may have spelt it wrong) ate there 4 times . i would definately recommend this place for a cheap weeks holiday
Great time great place
Arrived back from Lanzarote yesterday with a bit of a tan, having had a thoroughly good chill out holiday. We were a little apprehensive and confused as some websites seem to get the place mixed up with places of similar names, we stayed at the Playa Pocillos apartments in Matagorda, which are graded 2 keys. Our first impressions were good, the place looked far too nice for a 2 key establishment as we entered the gates, having taken the short taxi ride from the airport (just under 10 euros). The check in went smoothly and we were in our apartment in no time. This also astounded us as to- first its size, its fittings and fixtures and cleanliness. Yes there is some wear and tear but nothing much and everything worked. (frige ,2 ring hobs and small toaster)The bottled water, washing up liquid and cloth were a nice gesture. We thought we had struck it lucky and thought it was too good to be true. Any way to cut a long story short the week unfolded just as our first impressions had led us to believe and everything we saw of the place was true-excellent and of a high standard. The apartments have a small cafe style snack bar staffed by friendly English speaking staff, yes they say it is there winter season and only open 9am to 5pm November to May (9am to 11pm in summer) The pool is cleaned daily as is the whole complex, our room was cleaned 5 times during our weeks stay. There is a choice of supermarkets all within 5 to 10 minutes walk downhill and a small shopping centre which had numerous bars / restaurants to suit all tastes, many open from breakfast time to late evening and some with entertainment. If that wasn't enough the shopping centre is directly on a pedestrianised sea front where one can walk into the old town of Porto del Carmen some 45 minutes away passing enough restaurants to keep you happy for the year. (about 5 euro taxi fare we are told- we walked or caught the bus) We spoke with some other guests who were of a similar opinion to ourselves. Like us, the aeroplane noise wasn't a concern to them but I will concede it is very close to the end of the runway and you do hear them taking off and landing but we never had our sleep disturbed by them. I'd like to say the place was awful and don't waste your money, therefore keeping this secret to myself but I can't. I'm certainly putting this in my one to return to box. My only little concern and it is not the fault of the staff but of fellow guests, mainly British I'm sorry to say who 'reserve' a sunlounger from before 9am then don't use for several hours or for very short perids throughout the day and some who even take the cushion to their room each day so as not to have to hire one again (1 euro daily) I can see this being a problem in more popular periods.
Yee Ha!
My boyfriend and I stayed in the 4* Pocillos Playa between 3rd - 10th Jan 07 (not to be confused with other similarly named hotels). We had a great time and made the most of it! We had originally booked the 3* Los Fiscos, but on arrival there the manager told us that we would be staying in the sister hotel, Pocillos Playa, which is situated on the very edge of Puerto del Carmen close to Matagorda. Our room was furnished to a very high standard with the most powerful shower I've ever experienced - fantastic! We had views of the beach (Playa de los Pocillos - which is huge) and pool from our 1st floor balcony and an inland view of the mountains from the rear window. There was air con, but we couldn't figure it out and the tv was all German channels except for Sky News. The 'mini bar' was actually a fridge with no drinks inside. But the furnishings were brand new and luxurious and our spacious room was cleaned daily to a high standard. The pool is FREEZING, my only complaint - so noone was ever in it, it was like entering a plunge pool, I braved it twice but could stand no more than 5mins max. We walked to the Los Fiscos one day (hour and half walk at least!) just out of interest to see if we were missing anything and the pool is deep but the temperature was fine, the food was not as varied as Pocillos, the rooms looked a little out dated but the games room was much better at Fiscos and sun terrace was nice! Playa Pocillos currently has a pokey games room with 1pool table, table tennis and air hockey. Evening entertainment is not great yet at Pocillos Playa - but it had only been open 6 weeks so we opted for Carmens nightife which is only a €2.50 taxi ride away, or a 40 min walk to the centre. There is a day time entertainer at Playa Pocillos, El Mundo, who organises about 6 activities a day. There is a mini 'mini golf' free at the hotel, and there's a kids club, 2 internet access computers and a 'gym' - a small room with bike, couple of weights and little treadmill. There was no building work taking place but the indoor 'spa' is definitely NOT built yet - it's due to open in a 'few months'. Everyone seemed to be All Inclusive board and half the people staying at Pocillos appeared to have also been transferred from Fiscos - on purpose by the manager! Food was fine; varied with the usual soup, cold meats, salads, fruit, fresh cooked fish, gorgeous steak, and chips on every day. There were a few nights when some of the meat was very dubious and there were people complaining (or being 'fussy'!), but there were always other choices - maybe not as much for vegetarians/ children though so not always 4*standard (there is a McDonalds about a 5 min walk away - but we didn't feel the need to go to it!). The bar area is small with not much atmosphere but beer, wine, soft drinks and sangria is on tap self service! There are all the usual local spirits (some a bit weird tasting) and cocktails at the bar plus ice cream and coffee available - all between 10am - 11pm. People we met at hotel were great - esp Marie and geordie George, the hotel is a good 'friendly' size with a mix of families and couples staying there. Taxi to airport was €10, safe in room is €3 a day. We had no rain and it was mostly sunny, but very cool at night in January! Lanzarote is great, loads to see and do - Titty Trollops drag show is hillarious and the Island South Tour is good. We would def go back to Pocillos Playa...well if the pool was heated slightly so it's at least bearable for ten mins!
