The hotel was warm, comfortable and so friendly, besides being good value for money. The staff made a genuine effort to make our stay a pleasant one. It has a local feel to it, and is homely too. It was different than the other hotels we have stayed in, those may have been posh but were not personal. In Amber, we felt at home immediately. This is a spacious, very nicely and recently decorated, excellent value hotel with very helpful staff. The rooms were immaculate with fresh towels daily. Although close to the main tourist attractions it is in a little local residential area with plenty of nearby restaurants and little grocery shops and just a few minutes from the Bosphorus and the highway running alongside it so that access by taxi (which are plentiful and easy to get) to other parts of the city is not difficult. I stayed here 2 nights in March, was sent to Hotel Adonis the night before, as they were full with a large group, regardless of reservation. We were a day late in arriving, due to flight cancellation, I had e-mailed them to let them know, but was too late for cancellation and had to pay for "no show" even though we were sent elsewhere the next night. I spent a week at The Amber in late August 2006 (during Formula 1 week) and was very pleased. It is not a 4 star hotel. Some might argue it is not even a 3 star. But forget the stars; except for the large luxury chains they always seem irrelevant to me. It is supposed to be a 4 star hotel but the more you go up the stairs towards your room, the more you get disappointed. No light in corridors (which helps not seeing dust on the dirty walls). Bathroom has probably been white once upon a time... Electrical wiring is 19th century type. Wallpaper in bedroom is ripped. The only good point is the entrance hall. The problem is that you do not sleep in the hall. So it is up to you.

This place was marketed and sold through a major british website as a 4.5 star hotel - in relative terms (and on value for money) it is no better than a 2 star pension. Notwithstanding recent renovations - there were no skirting boards at all (and half a shower screen), none of the works were finished to an acceptable standard, there were nails in the wall (possibly for hanging a jacket on!), it was dirty in the rooms, all doors and locks and fittings are flimsy and cheap, it is located in the absolute worst part of the old town and... more

We booked for Best Western Empire Palace trough hotels. Due to mistakes at the hotel or at hotels they could only accomodate us for 1 night. So we were rebooked to Amber hotel for the other 2 nights. We saw 4 rooms there, which all are very, very small. You can hear everything in your room from other rooms, the hall and even the kitchen 2 floors down. Very nice hotel, friendly atmosphere, with good food, nice rooms. Close to the Blue mosque, Haghia Sophia, the Hippodrome, the Great Bazaar and other things you have to visit.

I had a reservation problem with my travel agent so the hotel I chose ( Best Western Empire Palace) managed for a partial stay for me and my wife then we were transfered to Best Western Amber Hotel. The hotel was located in a very creepy neighborhood we felt so scared when we walked back to the hotel from the nearby shopping area way before midnight.
