Casa Velha Do Palheiro Inn

I was part of a group that visited the Casa Velha Do Palheiro for a golf weekend in July. The hotel staff and management really went out of their way to make us feel special. The setting is just gorgeous - it is very peaceful and you wind down almost instantly as the atmosphere envelops you. The hotel feels more like a home, with lovely furnishings and friendly staff. I was lucky enough to stay at the Casa Velha as they held a 'red shoe' ball. You may well ask? in the past the owner (obviously a randy old git) used to have a ball and invite dozens of girls but no blokes.... strict dress code (red shoes only ie nothing else but red shoes)... in typical Portugese style this is still one hell of a party but the women are obviously a lot more modest nowadays as they all had their kit on! Besides from the ball the hotel is very smart and does the most amazing breakfast/ supper in the very elegant dining room.... more

We were recommended this hotel by a friend from the home counties. We were not disappointed. Great staff, food to die for and the rooms were simpy stunnning. We ate in their restaurant nearly every night. How they do not have a michelin star I do not know. GO AND STAY. Howard and Patricia.

We stayed in this hotel last September and I can recommend this very highly as this is a wonderful place to stay in. We had choosen a master suite which was very spacious and we had Whisky and Snaps as well as a fruit basket available each day of our stay. Additional to this they offered also non alcoholics on a complementary base as well as the already mentioned alcoholics. The outdoor pool was a bit chilly the whole day, but if you don´t care, you can freshen up quite well for a couple of strokes in the cold water. Service was very good... more

Very gooden surprise was this hotel. Golf course great condition and super views. Hotel is in beautiful gardens and very peaceful. Food and wine prepared by french chef in most appealing manner. Should have michelin star.

We stayed over the Carnival period which is mid to end February and absolutely loved it! A mixture of Latin flavours and rhythms on the streets over those days which we alternated with playing golf at Palheiro. The hotel is in a great location / just outside of busy Funchal in its own oasis of greenery. Its world famous 30 acres of garden are just heavenly and right next to the hotel is the spectacular 18-hole golf course. We were recently introduced to the delights of this hotel when we were looking for a short break. Not wishing to travel too far, but also looking for some decent sunshine, our daughter suggested Madeira. My only thoughts regarding Madeira was of an island aimed at the "old and infirm!"
